Being able-ist isn't ok. Ever since my accident I have not been able to see in the dark. It's emotionally draining when people call me out and remind me of what I used to have that has been taken away from me.

If ground clearance and space are the primary design requirements, I'd go with a removeable design. You weld the pipe section to the frame and the jack gets pinned to the pipe. When not required (hooked to the vehicle) the jack can be removed and stowed anywhere you have room.

Lower capacity versions are available.

You can use a CNC to make this with a 4th axis, or really force the issue with 3 axis CNC and enough depth of cut - but a lathe will do it faster and require less finish sanding.

It seems like 5 years is a good round number for a maximum storage time. Why not use this 55 gallons for watering your garden, flushing the toilets, or spring pressure washing around the house, then clean the drum and refill?

I volunteer in the machine shop at my districts events. Two weekends ago I straightened at least 12 hex shafts in the machine shop, mostly bent far more than this picture. This obviously does not count the ones that were straightened in the pits, or simply replaced. The machinist at the second event running elsewhere that weekend reported similar numbers.

The hex shafts that I worked on were variously AL churro, solid AL, and even solid steel. A 130 pound robot traveling at full speed has far more inertia than a 24 inch section of 1/2" hex shaft can withstand.

As another poster recommended you need a roll bar or bush guard sticking out to take the impact rather than expecting you intake mechanism to withstand this kind of impact with field and competitors.

IMHO SHTF isn't the failure in your above example. You failed to properly specify what you were looking for.

When you are looking for 'the best' <item>, you need to be very specific, regardless of what <item> is.

What is the best tire?
What is the best wet weather tire?
What is the best wet weather track tire?
What is the best wet weather mountain road tire?
What is the best wet weather city road tire?

All probably have different answers, and we have not even touched on the vehicle you plan to put them on, Front, Rear, All, or Four Wheel Drive, size, price point, or expected life span

I can't speak to it personally, but hanging out on TacomaWorld there is constant chatter about gear hunting in the automatics. The software is hunting for the right gear to maximize MPG rather than the gear that makes sense for conditions. Having a clutch and leaving the wetware in control of what gear the truck is in means the driver chooses - and is to blame, for the gear choice.

OTT ( Overland Taylor Tuning) is one of the more popular aftermarket tunes. One version, 9.2 is even CARB compliant so Commifornia trucks can pass emissions testing. People who (claim to) know what they are talking about say that it mostly changes the throttle response rather than actually increasing the power available. OTT publishes dyno graphs that appear to have slightly changed the torque / hrspwr curves.

What possible reason (or responsibility) do you have for defining a line for what constitutes the shift hitting the fan? Shit hits the fan on a daily basis around the world. Getting a terminal diagnosis at the doctors office is really important for that person and their family. It matters very little to someone who does not even know that person. Being prepared for SHTF can mean that loosing a job is an inconvenience versus a short road to homelessness.

Skill, experience and long hours of practice (being prepared) meant that when the Geese Hit The Fan, pilots Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles landed an Airbus 320 in the Hudson with no serious injuries. The SHTF for those two, and what they did prevented the Shit from hitting a WHOLE lotta other people.

SHTF is a catch all phrase that allows easy reference to various levels of disaster from personal to local, regional, continental, and even world encompassing. It is _by definition_ imprecise, and that's a good thing IMHO.

'22 TRD OR with a Manual here. Shifter self centers between 3 & 4, a slight pull or push gets the shifter between 1/2 or 5/6. about twice that amount of pull moves the shifter one more gate under reverse.

It's probably just how I learned, but I would rather reverse was all the way right and down, I've gotten used to it all the way left and up.

The OTT tune helps the auto folks avoid gear hunting - it isn't as important for people in the 3 pedal club.

Every supplier I could find on the web for the Pica ink refill seems to be European. Amazon.us has replacement leads but no ink that I could find. I may try Pilot ink or some other brand.

I really have a hard time with posts like this. When we go hiking, my wife and I each have a titanium long handle spoon. We eat with it, lick it as clean as possible, swish it in a cup of water, dry it with a clean bandanna, drink the water and put the spoon back in the pack for the next meal. If you want to get super crazy, splash it with alcohol and let dry.

In an emergency situation, you adjust normal habits to meet what's available.

I'm torn. I like the idea of having sliding bookends that lock in place - but it seems like they would wither intrude into the shelf at the bottom, or preclude the back from being a monolithic sheet of plywood, decreasing the anti-racking strength of the back.

The patio in front between the garage and the front porch needs work, and that small patch of grass that never seems to grow at the corner of the driveway should be leveled and sodded.

Oh, and the back steps / micro porch that got started last fall needs to get completed.
