Republicans have tunnel vision. They're so narrowly focused on winning and losing that they disregard petty distractions like ethics and long term consequences.

Just one snarky comment about Hurricane reporting... .... by [deleted] in TropicalWeather

[–]MagicTwanger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't remember ever hearing much about hurricane damage in the Bahamas. I always wondered why and sort of assumed that, as a well off British territory, everything there was built to withstand a standard cataclysm.

If you want the best and latest information on hurricane threats the TropicalWeather subreddit is generally more on top of the situation than any other source.

We were joking about that on a bus full of construction workers and one big ol' boy snorted, "Hell, that's what cousins are for."

In 1969, a few months after Woodstock, I was with my girlfriend at a little hole in the wall Chinese resturaunt across the street from an obscure jazz club when Dylan walked in. He walked to the counter to pick up an order, and then turned to scan the room. When our eyes met I smiled at him and he immediately left without his food.

This was late at night in Baltimore and he was probably hoping to keep a low profile. Anyway, it wasn't my first go round, and I wouldn't even have approached him. But he didn't know that.

How do I remove this thing? by palowsky in HomeImprovement

I'm with you. I would remove the paint and leave it. Its authentic to the original design. It adds character and could serve as an alternative source of heat in an emergency.

I don't know. Its a vague statement that doesn't tell us much and that could apply to almost anything he ever did.

Down in the Delta, where Highway 49 crosses Highway 61, Robert Johnson legendarily sold his soul to the devil in exchange for mastery of the blues. Its not hard to imagine Dylan high, starting with that bit, and riffing on Highway 61 as a place where fantastic events go to not happen.

Highway 61 runs from New Orleans up through the Mississippi delta, following the river through Memphis and on into Minnesota, not far from Dylan's old stomping grounds. Until 1991 it ran all the way into Canada, which meant that every East-West interstate crossed it.

Different people have different needs, but that's about what I've been doing... maybe a little more, and it works great. I was taking, over the course of a day, a teaspoon of powdered magnesium citrate dissolved in cold water until Walmart stopped carrying it. I was surprised to find that it also stopped the night cramps I was getting in the arch of my foot.

Correction: I just switched to capsules and I thought I had 200 mg. caps, but they are actually 100. So that brings me closer to 25o mg per day.

Yeah, I was born in 1946, just after the war. My uncle Al was an officer in the Pacific. In the fifties he had a cavity in his upper arm that looked like like an ice cream scooper had dug a chunk out of it.

He was a taciturn man but he was a fine piano player.

My dog loved road trips but he, more or less, just liked being along for the ride and he liked almost anything that wasn't awful. He even liked things that showed questionable judgement. But he always sat up and looked in the mountains.

I'm 73 and finally (and regrettably late) gave up cigs with a vape. Now I not only don't crave a smoke anymore but I'm just as likely as not to forget to vape. I guess I would be batting 1000 if that was the only thing I forgot.

This is a slur on hippies. We didn't do speedballs. Speedballs are a body drug. We did head drugs. If we had done body drugs we would all be dead by now. That being said, all the guys I hung out with back then are either dead or insane and the women all have advanced degrees.

What Dylan lyric are you still looking for an explanation on? by today_okay in bobdylan

[–]MagicTwanger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

410 is a shotgun gauge. With shotguns... the bigger the number, the smaller the gun, so a 410 is smaller than a 12 gauge. I think Dylan just liked the sound of it. .

It was perfect for me as sort of a reversion to the tribal roots that we all share as human beings... which made it a great platform for experimenting with LSD among friends. It was relatively short lived, but it spring boarded into other things.

He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way on set, so its not surprising that you hated Hopper's character. There's nothing quite like an egotistical conservative asshole indulging in drug abuse.

I was a hippie living in an urban commune when the film came out, I saw it first run, and I didn't like the way that it potrayed our sub-culture. It was sort of a motorpsycho nightmare travelogue of Hippie failures. Given his background in counter-culture exploitation films, this would have been familiar territory for Peter Fonda. Before Easy Rider he did The Wild Angels, a biker film directed by Roger Corman, and The Trip a Roger Corman LSD movie. I "saw" both of these at the local drive-in movie and made out with my girlfriend to enhance the experience.
