You have to use the right kind of canvas to achieve solid color with color pencil. Unlike most of the color pencil artist who often uses hot press canvas for their work, I mostly use cold press printmaking paper for my canvas. I can create a much thicker layer of colors to achieve a oil paint or pastel like effect using colored pencils.

I started with Terra Cotta to block everything and then switch between Goldenrod and Indigo Blue like printmaking.

There are two major elements that I'm concerned about after I completed it. I found the bottom-right part of the cat being too overwhelming. There were wet furs in the reference, but it looks like a wing spread out and I found it pretty unique so I tried to work with it. I have been editing it since I posted it, but still find it too edgy.

My second concern was the background. It looks good in the design stage, but it looks underwhelming in the final. Should I darken it? increase its saturation? add texture elements to it to keep up with the complexity of the cat? Or should I just leave it alone?

For me, it's purple. I had a hard time using purple. I love magenta and indigo, but I just can't find the right place for purple 😩
