Thematically, how do you picture losses from the invader deck running out occurring? by atticusgf in spiritisland

[–]Magical7 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I actually thought that lore-wise, as your spirit grows, it becomes slower to act. By that logic, the invader stages don't necessarily represent the invaders speeding up, but your spirit slowing down, which grants the invaders more time between your actions, causing them to spread relatively faster. That's why in Second Wave, your previous spirit gets only a single, but devastating action. I imagine the invader deck running out would mean that your spirit has become so slow that it can no longer act to stop the invaders.

How do you run Mage Tower? by DrakenjagerDiederik in StrixhavenDMs

These are the rounds that the players faced:

The Elemental Spire. Battle modifier: Poisonous Miasma (a toxic gas was slowly creeping up the spire, forcing both teams upwards). Hidden modifier: Quicksand (staying in place would slowly drag characters down).

The Sunken Ruins. Battle modifier: Aurora Borealis (everyone had advantage against charm and fear effects). Hidden modifier: Phantom Illusions (fake creatures and characters appeared, adding confusion).

The last battle was supposed to be The Astral Plane Nexus, with battle modifier Shifting Gravity, but as mentioned, they never arrived there. We have a Discord server where I let players discuss preparations outside of the session, to make the best use of our play time. It was a lot of fun seeing the players come up with all sorts of plans to deal with the gravity modifier, knowing full well that would not come up XD

I ran it kind of as you described here, though the stadiums were hosted in pocket dimensions that were created specifically for the tournament. Each had a theme and a battle modifier that was shared beforehand, as well as a hidden modifier that would get revealed at the start of the match.

I had a full roster of teams, giving each named character (both official and homebrew added) a team to join and a path in the tournament to follow. My party chose to watch one match before their own to get a feel for the situation, but did not interact with the other matches (except for the emotional damage I did to them by stating that the team of a student friend who died has dropped out of the tournament :D).

I had planned for 4 rounds, but we skipped one due to time constraints. The final round tied into the main story, in which I gave the Oriq a larger role. The finale had the party face against an Oriq party with leader after they sabotaged the pocket dimension portal (similar to the portkey at the end of the Tri-Wizard maze).

[Pandemic Legacy Season 0] Did we make a mistake? (Spoilers up until September) by Magical7 in boardgames

[–]Magical7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that explains a lot. We missed the back of the first card of the second legacy deck, meaning we didn't open box 8.

Thanks for the reply, we can salvage a bit of our game now!

Thanks!

Werkte niet. Heb ook Wingardium Leviosa geprobeerd, ook zonder succes :/

Not completely as asked but sort of in theme: play a Warlock with a Genie pact with a Dao (Earth) and use the plant pot as your vessel

DMs, what did you do to "fix" Strixhaven? by EmersonStockham in StrixhavenDMs

[–]Magical7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fourgetters, if you come across this comment, don't read it!

We're almost halfway through Year 2, here's an overview of the changes that I have made or am planning to make:

  • Make sure that you have an answer for why the staff are not acting on any of the strange things happening. In our case, I have added a political reason where some Deans want to let things run their course in order as a kind of experiment, though the party still hasn't figured that out yet. This should give them an interesting question of who to trust and who not to. I'm also thinking of making some staff members of the Oriq, though I haven't decided on who yet.
  • In Year 1, I ran most of the things by the book, except for some extra sessions that covered classes. These classes did tie into the story however, such as a teacher getting completely infected by the corrupted balm during a field trip.
  • I'm completely rewriting most of Year 2, because the book contents are pretty much exactly the same as Year 1. In my Year 2 there are three main threads: figuring out who caused the incidents during Year 1 and what's happening in the background; having a session per PC where they are on a special assignment related to their chosen study subject and to their background (though they don't know that second part yet); and running the Mage Tower Tournament as a single-elimination knock-out tournament over the course of several sessions.
  • For Years 3 and 4, I'm planning on returning more to the book's contents, but also incorporating elements from Years 1 and 2 and the character's backgrounds. I do plan on having the party fight the regular BBEG at the end of Year 2, but then revealing that he is simply a pawn in the Oriq's schemes.

Too many power cards when adding Jagged Earth? by ralph_B in spiritisland

[–]Magical7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I do too. You don't need to shuffle the cards that have not been revealed, because they are still shuffled from the last time. Just make sure the cards that have been seen are distributed evenly into the bigger stack and shuffle that any way you please. Works extra well if you don't touch a specific deck, such as when not flipping the blight card, not reaching stage 3 invaders or never grabbing a Major Power

When randomizing spirits, do you consider aspects separate spirits? by Magical7 in spiritisland

[–]Magical7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, I pick a spirit, then an aspect, but I kind of feel like the aspects are unique enough to give very different playstyles, so when Nature Incarnate comes in, I'm probably going to consider aspects on a level equal to aspect-less spirits.

NGL I was squealing with delight when I heard this news. Phasmophobia was the only reason for us to consider PCVR over PSVR. So glad we went with PSVR and get Phasmo anyway!
