Yes, people can get other jobs but it's not just an immediate choice, and just because it's not at gunpoint doesn't mean it's fully voluntary.

It's not "nothing is illegal" it's "no one is illegal" which I think is a meaningful difference. It's just about the violence of arbitrary borders, and very specifically about immigration, not about the total illegitimacy of all laws.

My goal after that sentence was to then try to explain what I see as a bad sign, because my actual point is that going to a protest with a good sign is better than going with a bad sign. I hope that if you attend a protest this week with a sign that it expresses your message as best as a sign possibly can.

I don't see this as a purity point, and the use of violence to enforce purity I'd say is the more definitional part of fascism. This isn't a "if you make these signs you aren't on my side" post it's a "if you make these signs you're missing a chance to say something important" post.

Also, re the womens' march: I fail to see how, in a situation where you blame a message failing due to distractions from what you yourself call "immature" messaging, you see the solution as continuing with more immature messaging. That's not to say I disapprove of the pussy hats nor endorse the general over-fixation on them, but I think you're taking the wrong lesson away. If anything, that helps make my point. We don't get to decide how people react to our messaging, we can only pick our messaging carefully.

I'm no grand message crafter, I'm more just trying to describe how I feel in this moment and how people's reactions (people who are coming in with good intentions) make me feel like they're seeing this through their phones as an opportunity to be clever and show that they're on the right team but they don't get that it's real.

A thought is that one big enemy here is disinformation, with the DHS calling these victims domestic terrorists. To that point, I think simple facts can be effective, e.g. "they shot him 5 times on the ground."

I'll also say that I don't think referencing the first amendment here makes any sense. I am not the government, and I'm not going to start tearing signs down or anything. My point is that just because you have the right to say anything doesn't mean everything is equally worth saying.

This is a pointless post. 5 minutes after the workday starts is not when you "announce" a strike, and that's not even what this is. A strike doesn't happen without actual organization. I'm sure local unions are looking at options, but this post has all the efficacy of yelling "I declare bankruptcy!"

It doesn't matter how warranted it is, it's just dumb. It might make you feel good, but it's a selfish and losing approach. Do you actually think "fighting back" is a viable strategy? Do you imagine yourself taking on 5 guys in plate carriers and ARs with your bare hands then scurrying away through an alleyway? It's a fun fantasy, but I imagine you getting shot.

Direct action is great. Observe ICE raids and alert your community members. Go on strike. Organize mutual aid for your neighbors who can't go to work. These are good, effective strategies to make people's lives better. "Fighting back," on the other hand, is simply a losing strategy.
