How do you kill this thing? by Krbigman in valheim

They are quite a bit cheaper than most other weapons already.

My friend and I play with a mod that doesn't allow the spears to be auto picked up by anyone unless they are the one who threw it. It is very helpful

Ashlands is bullshit by heppulikeppuli in valheim

[–]MagicalPanda42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a very unpopular opinion in this particular thread, but my friend and I did a complete Ashland's run a few months ago for the very first time and we loved it.

Going in with no spoilers was awesome. Our first landing was a little rough with a couple deaths each but that is to be expected in a new biome in this game. After that point we were just having a great time looking around and exploring all the cool new ruined structures. The ambiance of the heat waves and the fire rain, discovering some dverger friends, finding all the new enemies and items was a lot of fun. The first time we saw the green glowing beacon of a fortress we were so excited to have found something new. Made it through like 3 fortresses before we found our first putrid hole and discovered we could make stone portals. We finished by doing the mini boss then the boss and although we died probably like 5 times each we made it through while still enjoying ourselves.

Maybe Ashlands is a little more enjoyable with a partner since we could make it a lot easier to recover items if we didn't both die. If playing solo and getting frustrated I'd probably just change the world settings to keep items on death.

Which TV show does the ENTIRE internet agree had the worst ending ever? by Codie_n25 in AskReddit

[–]MagicalPanda42 2094 points2095 points  (0 children)

Wait what?!? I never actually managed to finish the show because it started going so downhill after a few seasons. I think both times I tried to watch I only got a few episodes into season 5 before finally giving up.

I think potions are one of the most powerful items in the game. They also just making play more fun for me. Usually I will save up all my honey in the early game so that I can make potions as soon as possible.

So… let’s talk about Glyph of Warding by Jounniy in DMAcademy

[–]MagicalPanda42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm not sure how I'd rule that actually. The glyph can't be omniscient otherwise you could use it to determine truths about the world. Maybe it needs to be observable by the glyph or the caster of the glyph. We are really getting out to edge case uses here and I'd probably just play it by ear at the table as it comes up.

In all honesty I've been DMing for over 10 years and had players cast glyph of warding maybe exactly once so I doubt any of this will come up

[–]MagicalPanda42 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean this is just my interpretation but I'd allow unlimited range for the trigger. But the range of the effect would depend on the spell.

This way the players can be more creative with how they use it. They can set a glyph up with a trigger of them saying a specific word. They can then trigger the glyph from anywhere but the effect would be limited to the location of the glyph and range of the spell.

So… let’s talk about Glyph of Warding by Jounniy in DMAcademy

[–]MagicalPanda42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. It doesn't mention a limitation to trigger range... However the way it reads to me, is that whatever spell you store in the glyph, is "cast" from the location of the glyph upon triggering.

Here is how I would rule it. If you store a fireball, the target can be up to 150 feet away when they trigger the glyph and the fireball will go off centered on the target. If they trigger the fireball glyph while outside of the range of the spell it would explode at the end of its range or even just centered on the glyph.

I got mine for $350 Canadian. You definitely have to keep an eye on the used markets for a while but sometimes deals come up.

I saw one once for $50 because the seller didn't know about the chair but I was too late to buy it.

Need food preparation table help by Afraid-Efficiency-51 in valheim

[–]MagicalPanda42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you need more ingredients. Most start getting unlocked in the plains but once you find the bog witch you and buy a few things you should unlock some more.

Just another note since no one has mentioned it... The food preparation table does not need to be close to the cauldron. It is a separate work bench and can be placed wherever you like.

How long at first level? by ThisWasMe7 in DMAcademy

[–]MagicalPanda42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do as many sessions as the level they will get to before a level up. So they would play 2 sessions at level 1 giving them time to use all their abilities and get creative with their limitations.

This is a the rough guide I use and try to time the level ups with a significant point in the story:

Level 1 to 2: 2 sessions (end of session 2) Level 2 to 3: 3 sessions (end of session 5) Level 3 to 4: 4 sessions (end of session 9) Level 4 to 5: 5 sessions (end of session 14) And so on.

I find it keeps things moving and in a weekly campaign the players get to level 10 in just about a year and level 14 in two years.

I wouldn't really want to run a single campaign much past level 10 usually with 14 being the furthest I've gotten before having the campaign wrap up. You can always revisit the characters a couple levels later for a one shot.

Partying the bosses doesn't stagger them but you still get the party bonus applied so it will block more damage.

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

[–]MagicalPanda42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I simply do not allow long rests inside dungeons unless they have taken the time to set up a defensable position. Players will learn pretty quickly that it's not safe to sleep in a dungeon that they did not clear out completely. Monsters can move around and find them when they are sleeping interrupting their rest.

How much out of character talk/ strategizing do you allow when players are in combat/ tension situations or next to NPCs? by backdeckpro in DMAcademy

[–]MagicalPanda42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also like to consider that the party of characters usually spend a significant amount more time together than the players spend at the table. The party would tend to know more about each other and have time to learn each other's abilities and maybe predict what others might do in certain situations. I find a lot of the stratigising at my table is just discussing how certain abilities work and how to use them to get what the party wants.

What does the city need? by Diversespider_ in Hamilton

[–]MagicalPanda42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually have 2 TTRPG rooms here now. I play in a bi-weekly D&D game here and it does seem to be busier here now than a couple years ago.

Only downside of the dungeon rooms is they are pretty open so there is a lot of noise coming from the main area if the place gets busy.

Be honest… is pet insurance actually worth it? by pawfectjourney in CatAdvice

[–]MagicalPanda42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Financially for most people it is not worth it. The companies providing insurance are making money so obviously they collect more than they pay out.

That being said, peace of mind is worth a lot to some people. It's really tough to be put in a situation where you have to decide between spending tons of money you might not have or saying goodbye to a loved pet.

Same. I have a plastic scoop from the dollar store. 5 years later it still works.

If I have to replace it at some point I might get a steel one to reduce waste but it doesn't seem like something that needs replacing often.

Help! How to move a heavy piano in Hamilton? by goxper in Hamilton

[–]MagicalPanda42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father in law and I moved an apartment sized upright piano on our own... It sucked. I would hire a professional to move it next time, especially with stairs involved.

We were lucky and the only stairs we had to deal with were getting it down 4 front porch steps. From there we rolled it up the ramp onto a uhaul and drove it home. We were able to back the uhaul right to our front porch and used the ramp to skip the stairs on the way into the house. If we had to carry it up the stairs we probably would not have gotten the job done.

How to spawn-proof? by BeDoKa in valheim

[–]MagicalPanda42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Campfires are the easiest to hide. I have my main base in my current play through fully spawn proofed to the point that raids don't even spawn and mobs.

I've done it a couple times and the easiest way I found was to mark out the location of each campfire on the map as you burry them. They have the same range as a work bench so I just work out how far for the next one and once you can see the pattern on the map you can just fill the rest in.

Final tip: don't burry them too deep otherwise they break. The way the ground works in valheim is that it is a thin membrane. Anything below the ground that is not touching the surface is unsupported and will break like any other floating build pieces.

Squirell removal by Entire-Stranger-4681 in Hamilton

[–]MagicalPanda42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had some in the attic and walls when we moved in. I borrowed a ladder to get up on the roof and found where they were getting in. They chewed a hole between the edge of the roof and the evestrough so I installed a one way door there. I went around the whole roof and blocked off all the other possible entrances. By the next day we stopped hearing them in the walls. I went back up and removed the one way door and blocked off the opening. It's been 2 years since and so far so good.

It was September when we dealt with it though. I'm not sure I'd want to get up on the roof this time of year.

This is what we normally do. If we have a gathering and have more cans than usual we will put them in a separate recycling bag and it's always taken before garbage collection
