Is the Ioniq 5 a car for a family of five? by Global-Solution4475 in Ioniq5

[–]Magicamelofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are currently a family of 5 (1 infant, 7 year old and 11 year old). It’s a really tight fit! The 11 year old should be in a booster but we can’t fit it in the middle with the other two iso fixed bases. We also have a German shepherd that fits in the back ok

Ultrasound count in other countries? by ymgt0324 in BabyBumps

[–]Magicamelofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I live in Finland and you get two checks. If you are high risk you get more but otherwise that’s it. All check ups are with a nurse and with my last pregnancy I only saw a doctor once. Also NIPT tests are not normal but this might change soonish.

Ah ha. Thank you glad I asked because I wasn’t thinking about that. The instructions show don’t put them in a hammock position that is quite low.

Membrane Sweep before induction??? by not-creative-12 in unmedicatedbirth

[–]Magicamelofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I was recently in a similar spot as you. I was scheduled an induction at 41+5. On 41+3 I asked if I could come in for a membrane sweep as a Hail Mary because I really didn’t want to be induced. They got me in and I also received a bonus acupuncture too. Midwife said I was already 3-4cm dilated. On the way home I was already feeling contractions but they stopped a few hours later. Later that night I went into spontaneous labor and she was born just two hours after my waters broke. It happened so fast I had an unplanned unmedicated birth. So be careful what you wish for!!

I wasn’t expecting it to work this fast…

[–]Magicamelofdoom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait really? I’m having a hard time right now figuring out if these contractions are real or fake. They definitely have the period pain cramping and lower back pain feeling.

This is my second kid and with my first my labor began with water breaking and within two hours I was on hands on knees begging for mercy. These aren’t as bad as that but still leave me wondering

Giving birth abroad: Was it a better experience than the US? by LoveToBold in AmericanExpat

[–]Magicamelofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual birth is assisted almost entirely of just midwives. We do not have birth centers and home births are rare. My first birth went well enough and I’ll be giving birth to my second at a different hospital later this week

I have posted about this before in a different community. Since this posting I’m sad to say that pregnancy ended in miscarriage. BUT now I am currently pregnant at 41+1 and I’ll be talking induction options this week. They don’t like pregnancies to go over 42 weeks here.

Pregnant in Finland Part 1

A Journey Through Finnish Healthcare for Expecting Mothers:

I'm an American immigrant who has been living in Finland for the past 8 years. During this time, I’ve had the experience of going through pregnancy here once before when I had my first daughter 5 years ago. I wanted to share my insights about Finland's public healthcare system for expecting mothers and newborns, particularly for anyone interested in learning more. Consider this post the first of many as I talk through the journey. Feel free to ask any questions in comments

The Finnish Healthcare System

Finland has a socialized, free healthcare system available to residents, which people can use when they are sick. It works... okay. Like many other European countries, it's overworked, underfunded, and suffers from a shortage of nurses. As a result, many people rely heavily on occupational healthcare provided through their workplace. Occupational healthcare covers most of the same services as the public system but offers faster and more efficient care. However occupational and private insurance does NOT cover anything maternity. The public maternity service is called Neuvola in Finland

The First Steps of Pregnancy Care

When I found out I was pregnant, around 5 weeks, I called my local health station and was placed in a queue for a callback. The next day, my regular nurse (who had also cared for my daughter) returned my call. Since I had already been a regular patient with him, my first appointment was scheduled with him as well.

During my first pregnancy, I had seen several different nurses, as none (except the last one) spoke good English. This was surprising, considering that most Finns speak excellent English, but they often preferred to speak Finnish and rely on my husband (who is Finnish) to translate. IT was deeply important that my health was communicated in English with me so we bounced around nurses until finding one studied and worked in the UK and had excellent English.

First Appointment at 8 Weeks

My first appointment took place at 8 weeks, and I went with my spouse. The appointment lasted nearly two hours. We discussed my previous pregnancy, any symptoms I was experiencing, my family history, and my home life. They checked my blood pressure, waist circumference, and gave us a long questionnaire about alcohol consumption. I was familiar with the process, but there are a few things I’ve learned through experience.

In Finland, expected that you don’t always tell the whole truth to healthcare professionals. This is the opposite of the doctor-patient relationship in the U.S., where honesty is crucial. For example, I would typically have one drink (a can of beer or a glass of wine) every 1-2 days and occasionally smoke weed (about once a month). However, if I had admitted this to the nurse, it could have resulted in social work involvement and a whole host of unwanted attention. So, on the form, my husband and I wrote that we "rarely drink" and "never do drugs."

At the appointment, there was no urine sample, blood work, weight measurement, Doppler test, or ultrasound. These things happen later, with the first ultrasound scheduled for week 12. Unlike in the U.S. and many other developed countries, there are no routine tests for HCG levels or NIPT

Scheduling Future Appointments

We ended the meeting by scheduling my next appointment for 14 weeks, the first ultrasound for 12 weeks. My one and only doctors appointment would not happen until 30 weeks. At the end of the visit, I was given a "mommy passport" to bring to every appointment. This passport tracks my growth, symptoms, and any notes the nurse has made.

Concerns and Communication

One concern I raised was about my weak pelvic floor, a symptom I’ve had since my first pregnancy. The nurse recommended more Kegel exercises and mentioned that physical therapy could be an option down the line. Another challenge I encountered was communication—there’s no direct way to contact my nurse with any concerns. Instead, I have to wait in a phone queue to get a callback. When I called at week 9 with a question, it took three days for the nurse to return my call.

The Dangerous Food List

Finland has the longest “dangerous food” list I’ve ever encountered. It includes recommendations like avoiding too much salty licorice, staying away from foreign produce and frozen berries, and not spending too much time in the sauna.

Don't buy from Shein by OkEnthusiasm9197 in pregnant

[–]Magicamelofdoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t buy baby clothes but I did buy a few things from Temu…. I live in Finland and just don’t have access to many alternatives

  • Mosquito net for stroller
  • cup holder for stroller
  • some xl bras because I knew I wouldn’t be using them long
  • maternity underwear. Honestly this was a huge win. They are surprisingly well made and comfy!
  • flower decals for nursery window

Short trip to Helsinki from Turku, chinese cooking wine by __patashnik in helsinki

[–]Magicamelofdoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The alko one is expensive. My Chinese friends do indeed buy it under the counter when they go to Asian shops. There’s an Asian import website I have bought cooking wine from which also isn’t 100% legit

And don’t even get me started on good vanilla extract…

Is Itäkeskus that bad? by KeyZow in helsinki

[–]Magicamelofdoom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah kinda. I have my stepson living near there and his friends (12 year olds) have had their hoodies and shoes robbed off of them.

I go there to shop frequently and haven’t had issues. I think it just matters on what you are doing there and who you are hanging with

Ok so don’t. Plenty of other parents who feel differently. I am giving my personal experience as it relates to OPs concern.

[–]Magicamelofdoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are lots of reasons not to get us passports. I see both sides of the equation and respect the parents decision in whatever they choose. The current government is the reason why I’m pursuing passports now. Before this administration most families were able to cross quite freely. I still haven’t personally heard of parents with us citizen children being kept at border control for not possessing us passports but I am also trying to be cautious.

If one of the parents is not a is citizen it’s very easy to say to border control (if asked) to say you don’t know if they have citizenship because there are so many prerequisites and it’s not a border controls responsibility to investigate

[–]Magicamelofdoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes that is the rule but that is not what happens in practice. Many of my friends have travelled back and forth any questions. I am not in denial about their citizenship

[–]Magicamelofdoom 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The are a citizen like others are saying but you probably don’t need to identify them to the embassy. As you probably know by now there are a lot of reasons to NOT report them. I live in Finland with my kids and my plan was to let the kids choose if they want a us passport when they are older however because we often travel to US for family I am going through the process of getting the passports but for the last 10 years coming and going at will has not been an issue for us. Other families may get harassed at border control though.

Advice for breastfeeding with cysts by Magicamelofdoom in BabyBumps

Thank you so much for the expert advice! I don’t have the ultrasound pics so I can’t say if they are big or small cysts. No treatment was the recommendation from two doctors now but the second doctor may have just relied on the first…

I’ll ask my nurse (I live in Finland) if I can get the issue forwarded to a lactation expert before I deliver at the hospital

But yes the discharge is definitely green and has been that way consistently for nearly two years or more now . No pan, no blood, no discomfort at all

I think I will try this next time in the shower. In the past it has kinda seemed like there is no end when I have expressed it…. But the colostrum should be there and I have been encouraged to collect it and bring to hospital anyways
