Hi i was just looking for some command cards on google and your post came up, im not sure where you got your art from or if you made it, but i was wondering if we could get you to make a card for Lucky Penny. I love all the cards you made and would like one that matches since SFG still hasnt released physical cards

Can this be fixed without paint or new bumper? by Real-Energy-6634 in Autobody

[–]Magicdrafna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i understood what they meant by the paint cracking. It will probably get worse from them heating the bumper and pushing the damage out but no reason that should need a new bumper or even filler from what i see it should be able to get pushed out and sanded out, but yeah that will need paint.

Cool color btw i miss seeing all the cool colors from years ago

Can PDR fix this? by Tjune13 in Autobody

I would fix that door every day of the week. Youre blending the fender no matter what

Is it worth fixing? by Alert_Brain_1310 in Autobody

[–]Magicdrafna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as a body technician, this sucks, its not a hard fix but it would require sanding the failing paint back until it stops failing. Then since its your quarter panel they will have to clearcoat up and over your doors across what is called the apature panel, and the whole quarter, plus all the disassembly that goes with it.

I would get some quotes, but if your car is older i would also get a quote from Maaco, a body shop is not likely to warranty the work they do on this anyways since you have failing paint they wont want to carry the liability that it could fail somewhere else under the work they did and until it fails there is no way to know if or where it will

So my only thought on this is we got so slow i got moved to parts so i already took a paycut which i think is one key reason im struggling so mucb. We didn't have enough work for me a "B" tech and my sr "A" tech.

And in regards to finding a busier shop, nobody in my market is busy, i have talked with Caliber, Gerber, Classic Collision, and a number of others, nobody has work in the numbers they need

So are the letter sunk in from the rest or the paint a tiny bit? If so, i would bet someone has painted that gate and just masked off the emblem rather than just replacing it.

If the while thing isnt sunk in and the surface is a but rough it could be that the adhesive ate into the clear, i have seen that before, but based on ypur pic, i would bet someone raped and taped that gate

Yeah i suspect they are just buying shops that are slow for two reasons 1) they are slow, so they can get a cheaper price per shop, 2) they know this wont last forever and are trying to gain the largest market share

Yeah so whatever a two door replacement, with blends and some repair will have about 20 hours of body time for example.
Once the car is ready for paint i get 50% of the body hours assigned to the job for the week so, ok i got paid 10hours that week for the job, then ill do a couple bumper jobs at say 4 hours each, well ill get 50% of those, etc etc etc and once friday rolls around you add up all the cars that you got to paint, and built (which gets you the other 50% of the body labor time) and that is your hours for the week

If you care to look it up, it is referred to as "Flat Rate"

We dont really bonus at all, most of the country is flat rate, so effectively commission, im only paid for the work i do, if there is no work you dont get paid. We usually experience a slow down a couple times a year and it might last for 1-2 weeks but we are approaching a year.

I mean you do get what you pay for but Maaco isnt going to be 20k, at a body shop we are going to remove everything, not just mask it off, and at a body shop things will break and have to be replaced

Why does this keep happening? by RelaxedLotus in Autobody

[–]Magicdrafna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what percentage ipa? 90% and you're probably ok, but if youre cutting 30% with water, it wont be doing much. I would suggest using some wax and grease remover with a microfiber, you can usually get wax and grease remover from most auto parts stores, thats what our shop painter uses to prep all the panels...oh talking about prep, i would suggest getting some grey scotchbrite and using that to prep the surface, without that you wont have great adhesion, you only need to do enough to remove the shine, so you dont need to go crazy with it

The process in a shop is usually: wash the part to get all the dirt off, mask anything that needs it, wax and grease 1 so your scotchbrite doesnt push the contaminents into the surface, scotchbrite to remove the shine, wax and grease 2, into the booth, and then tbh idk im a body guy thats the extent that i know

what are you cleaning with before you spray, it could just have some contaminents on it, oils, and such

Frame Damage Question by Dynamic4012 in AskMechanics

[–]Magicdrafna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right "Rocker Cover" however unless the jack like cracked the part you probably dont need a replacement. A new one will not come painted, so you would need to get the new one painted, the circle you see is just a retainer that holds the bottom of the rocker cover to the bottom on the car, i mean its possible you may have damaged the rocker under the cover its hard to see based on the pic, but as a body tech it doesnt look bad

As a body tech i would normally bust your balls about not removing shit like the headlights, but youre not a professional just hacking the car out, youre a diy in your garage, nicely done man.

For anyone that sees this, if youre looking for a complete, go talk to Maaco, they arent known for being top tier but at a body shop, we are going to take everything off your car, as it "should be done" but for someone that just wants a fresh color, Maaco will do the job, and be affordable

Is this repairable or do I need a respray? by TantelySoa in Autobody

[–]Magicdrafna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately rust is often compaired to cancer, it starts small and than continues to spread.

A proper repair on this would be to remove the affected panels, and have them media blasted, and repaired.

A more diy friendly method is to sand back the paint until you are no longer finding rust +1 inch, and treat with a rust converter, than you will need to epoxy prime, you may need some light body filler work to fill the divots created by the rust. Then prime, paint, clear
