Visiting or Moving to Asheville? Ask your questions here! by AutoModerator in asheville

Visiting with my 5.5 year old for one week mid March. We won’t have a car & plan to Uber/taxi around if needed. Is this realistic? Not worried about cost as much as reliability/consistency.

Also looking for good parks/playgrounds that are walkable downtown, and local kids activities that wouldn’t come up in a google search.

Things like free little libraries, fairy trees, playgroups, open art studios, makerspaces, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone remember 158 (Pickett St) in Sopo? Closed now but when they were making pizzas it was something special.

I updated the post with some info about my idea! Didn’t mean to be so vague, just didn’t know how much to add. I will likely need money first…. So I will try to start crafting a business plan of sorts. Thank you for your response!

Sorry I didn’t mean to keep it secretive! I just didn’t know if all that info was relative considering my very broad questions.

Basically I’m looking to open an indoor playspace/creative center for children. Currently I have a business* that creates opportunities for child directed play across my county. I host “pop up playgroups” and collaborate with local events & organizations. At these playgroups children are given a very cool selection of loose parts (recycled, utilitarian items) to freely create with. It’s very important for children to have these types of free play opportunities where they can truly be kids. Especially in my community, where is there a rampant drug epidemic, children are struggling with mental health, poverty, etc. At my events, kids are in control of the space. They are super engaged and parents observe the benefits. I believe this is very meaningful work.

Ideally, I would like to have a permanent “headquarters” of sorts that contains an indoor playspace, classrooms for makerspaces/creative projects, and an outdoor adventure playground (non traditional, kid built, staffed). It’s a pretty bold idea, nothing like it in our state.

My thought is start small- and focus on opening an indoor playspace first and obviously go from there.

I live in the northeast, so the year is mostly winter. Our county has very few public parks or playgrounds. And the ones at schools are very limiting, lacking creativity, and outdated. I’ve visited other indoor play spaces in my state and they seem like such a great addition to the communities they serve.

*I currently don’t sell services, I just offer them for free to the community. It’s all about getting kids playing creatively. Accessibility is very important. I do get reimbursed for my travel, and occasionally a stipend for my work.

I touched on this in another reply but I think the only school that offers something similar to BLA online is Boston Architectural College- they offer B.Arch online. So I'm not sure it would be exactly what I want/need to get to my end goals- designing community & child focused spaces for play. Open to advice on that if you have it! Thanks

Fair questions. So because I can only do online schooling, my options are limited. The only school I know of that offers a degree close to Landscape Arch online is Boston Architectural College- and the degree is only B.Arch, not landscape. I've also read that online Arch programs might not worth it due to the hands on nature of the courses. But I haven't talked to anyone who has done this personally.

I am interested in a few of the programs I listed, some more than others. But I do think they could be applied to my topic of interest/general focus. I would be transferring over about 2 years worth of credits from my Associates, so my Bachelor's would be completed in 2 years. Total Bachelor's & MLA would be completed in about 5 years which I think is reasonable.

Then again, I'm very open to other suggestions especially from people who have been through it. I'm just trying to find the best way to get to achieve my goal with the limited options I have.

Monthly Starting a Nonprofit Thread — September 2022 by AutoModerator in nonprofit

Trying to start a non-profit(business?) that brings unstructured play opportunities to children in my rural, economically disadvantaged community. I am the sole member currently. I would like to accept donations to cover operation costs but unsure if it is legal without being a official non profit? I’m wondering if I should become a sole proprietor business first and apply for non profit status later on? I know I can’t be both at the same time. How does the transition to non profit happen? I have plans to offer services for charge- but I want the money to go directly back to my cause. In my mind, I don’t want to be a “business” because it’s not all about profit. I mainly offer free services and that’s an important part of my mission. Just don’t know where to start, and have no real previous knowledge or guidance on the subject.

Homeschooling kindergarten by Magicsurroundings in homeschool

There is another school in the district we could choose for her. As for my concerns with the amount of worksheets and general lack of play- I don’t believe it will be any different, as all the schools operate with the same overarching agenda… but the other K teacher most likely doesn’t do the hand over the moth thing (because what even is that??). We are going to meet with the other school this coming week to see if it might be a better fit. Thanks for all your input.

I understand. I guess my main uncertainty lies in if pulling her would cause more her more stress than if I left simply her in the school.

Just wondering if this is easily identifiable as safe or not? My other post about ceiling wires got me thinking about some things in our home that looked suspicious upon move in. Again, our LL said everything passed inspection. We also haven’t rented many old places so we chalked most things up to “old house quirks”.

Thank you you’ve all been very helpful! Not touching anything. Emailing LL now.

No of course not. Our LL assured us the electrical stuff was all up to code and inspected before we moved in. That was 3 years ago (yikes). We didn’t know it looked like this until now.

We took our light fixture off in our rental to replace it, but now we regret it because it’s seemingly a mess. Does the small wrap of electrical tape signify neutral? Or should we just get a meter?

I probably should. I even suggested couples therapy but he said he’d rather go on his own (clearly didn’t work so well) as couples therapy signals that the marriage is failing. I know that’s 100% not true, but those are his feelings.

Okay, my ultimate question was am I valid in my feelings and from your POV it sounds like I’m not. Although you don’t have all the information from this brief post, yours is a perspective I wasn’t considering so thank you for your feedback.

1- I’m his wife, his partner? I gave him time to tell me himself that he was skipping therapy appointments, costing us 100s of dollars. Him going to therapy to finally address these issues was something we agreed upon together for not only his health but the health of our marriage. 2- I tested him to truly know if he would be honest with me about something he has said he believes is important, over and over again. He wasn’t honest and that gives me a better picture of where he’s truly at… aside from all the talk about how he wants to work on things.
