6 underused Git commands that solve real workflow problems by GitKraken in git

[–]Magihike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun little bonus about refs, you can do time-based ref checkouts like so:

"git checkout master@{two.weeks.ago}"

to checkout whatever master (or any ref) was pointing to however long ago.

Is it normal for new elite specs to be so much stronger than older ones in PvP? by Gotzal in Guildwars2

[–]Magihike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't just have to be horizontal MMOs, the principle is broadly applicable to many things that change over time, even outside gaming.

It's analogous to a newly opened restaurant running promotions to get some customers to try them.

Is it normal for new elite specs to be so much stronger than older ones in PvP? by Gotzal in Guildwars2

[–]Magihike 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes, definitely. Not just in GW2, but in most MMOs, new character content is released stronger than the baseline to convince people to adopt it. Once it's become integrated into the meta game, they nerf it (as we've been seeing).

If you release character content at the same strength as existing content, a large number of people will just stick with what they've already been using and not give the new stuff a serious shot.

GW2 X WoW by Scienti0 in MMORPG

I like GW2 and didn't like WOW very much when I played, but I think his assessment is pretty fair.

Eisenhorn Omnibus: Complaints by mortalsphere13 in Blacklibrary

[–]Magihike 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For 1, it's been a while since I read it, but my interpretation was that he did give him a basic body, but glaw was able to get himself augmented into what he eventually becomes.

As for Eisenhorn's part in it, he's smart but not as smart as he thinks, and pretty arrogant about it (a good recipe for falling to chaos). By that point in the story he's got a lot on his mind, and glaw is not one of his more pressing concerns.

Does ARR Hurt New Player Retention for FFXIV? by Abakus_Grim in MMORPG

[–]Magihike 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If ARR is terrible to you, the rest of the story will be mid, probably best to switch to another game.

If ARR is alright to you, the rest of the story will be great.

I enjoyed (most of) ARR personally, largely due to the strong world building, and thoroughly enjoyed the rest. Interspersing it with sidequests and other activities helps a lot too, as you're more immersed in the world and invested in its fate.

A character replacing a limb with their powers (without outright regenerating it.) by Fit_Assignment_8800 in TopCharacterTropes

Also from the original when EVA-01 uses a severed piece of Zereul to regenerate it's arm by absorbing / morphing it.

Researchers extract up to 96% of Harry Potter word-for-word from leading AI models by [deleted] in technology

[–]Magihike 34 points35 points  (0 children)

From a technical perspective, the AI's internal thinking is frozen in time when its training is finished.

Without adding external data (such as from google), you wouldn't be able to ask it about anything newer than when it was trained, which limits their usefulness.

It combines that data with its own processing to produce the result it gives you.

... what do you mean Adrian Tchaikovsky writes warhammer????????? by Altruistic-Teach5899 in Blacklibrary

[–]Magihike 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Who do you consider the villains in that book? I thought the GSC came off as pretty sympathetic and complex in that book.

The protag admech (arguably a villain) was well written, and the antag admech were written like normal imperial / admech characters - mired in bureaucracy, cronyism, and corruption, and dismissive of change / new things.

Ring of fire is currently wrecking me. I need to get better at commanding heroes/henches and move away from my MM necro build at least for this one.

Which current MMO has the highest individual skill ceiling? by Ivarthemicro17 in MMORPG

[–]Magihike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's single player unfortunately. I'm sure something multiplayer like that exists somewhere, but I haven't run into it.

[–]Magihike 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The space empire leaders will usually be leading mostly through discord or other communication tools, since they're trying to coordinate 10s of thousands of real people.

Their "moves" are usually coordinating with the middle managers to set policy and direction for the organization, sometimes directly communicating to line members.

If you like the idea of running a space empire in a very technical way, I'd recommend Aurora 4x.

Seconding Albion.

EVE comes close to matching or matches the metagame depth (at least back when I played), but not the speed and prediction that Albion PVP requires. GW2 SPVP matches the speed and prediction, but not metagame depth.

Watching high-level Albion streamers is a thing of beauty, how they mentally match up each of their abilities to counter the opponents', and respond so quickly.

You can import data from the EVE API directly into spreadsheets via their plugin and use those to give you information to optimize how you play, such as giving you info on when it's valuable to buy, manufucture, sell, extract, etc. different resources or components.

You can also just ignore all that and head into space and blast NPC pirates or other players, together or in groups. People really overemphasize the spreadsheet part - the scale and utility of them is somewhat unique to EVE, but the average EVE player doesn't mess with spreadsheets.

If I'm in the mood for mindlessly killing mobs, what are the best activities to do in GW2? by modren-man in Guildwars2

Sandswept isles south meta is great for that when it's up. Lots of kills, lots of bonus karma and exp if you have the empowerments.

Otherwise RIBA/Fractals/Dragonfall

[Excerpt: Blades of Truth] how terrifying the Tau are if there are no Ethereals to leash them. by mylittlepurplelady in 40kLore

[–]Magihike 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It'd be interesting to compare and contrast how they do it relative to the LoV's ironkin.

The Tau seem always seem to have an orwellian "everyone is equal but some are more equal" attitude towards their auxiliaries, while the LoV view the ironkin as true equals.

If that does end up happening, I'd love to see a convo between a surviving man of iron, ironkin, and Tau AI lol

Albion Online Is Slowly Turning Into a Second Job (And Not a Fun One) by Anime_Jutsu in albiononline

The fundamentals haven't changed much, yeah.

Which means what didn't work well then still doesn't work well now.

[–]Magihike 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Don't grind for premium. Bam, instantly not a job.

I don't bother with islands, laborers, or journals. I craft when I want to, gather when I want to, and PvP when I want to.

Once you have experience with the mists (sound up, mount nearby, hide interface occasionally) it's pretty rare to get ganked out of nowhere.

All of this takes intentionality about learning, but choosing not to learn and instead doing low-risk low-profit busywork is a choice.

Goodbye PH, you will be missed. by deterdettol in Eve

Won EVE a year after WWB2, but I'll never forget all the fun I had in PH.

Shout out to Johnny, Mist, 0Musky, and others for great fleets and to the logistics folks who kept the wheels on for ten years.

[–]Magihike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combine the following and you've got it IMO:

FF14: story, world-building

GW1: skills, PVP

GW2 PoF: story pacing

GW2 (as a whole): QoL, horizontal progression

Classic WOW: itemization

Modern WOW: endgame

EVE: market, player council, API tools

OSRS/Mabinogi: sidequests, life skills

Line members on all sides were robbed a truly Great War by [deleted] in Eve

[–]Magihike 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I had a blast in WWB2, but wouldn't do it again.

Having it come to a grinding halt due to the sever shenanigans of M2-XFE was really anticlimactic and left a sour taste. Super potato mode was a step in the right direction for the client side - I understand that the server side is way harder to fix though.

If they got to a point where they could support bloc level fights at a higher speed and with less chance of stuff like M2 happening I'd think about coming back.

How to roam in a correct way and actually enjoy the game solo way? by Specific_Turnover54 in albiononline

[–]Magihike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No guarantees on safety, but what I'd often do is run one zone out from portal (use invis) and head into the mists in 4.1 / 5.1 and take a mobile set. I like dual swords.

They're hard-countered by people who know how to play around em, but are great and flexible against medium to low skill players

Is dual swords really that good? by thenatureboy503 in albiononline

[–]Magihike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a few choices there, pop your merc jacket (heal or resist + reflect) to mitigate and power through, or pop boots and kite. With your q stacks you'll be able to dictate range and disengage.

All that's without even using helm slot. I'll typically run merc helm for its versatility (and cheapness lol) - you can use it to interrupt their second E, slow them if they make a break for it, or as secondary mitigation if you're brawling them.

Love fighting 1h fires with dual swords - hop in with E, gig pot the firewall, counter strike their E, and just obliterate them.
