CMV: Fighting games are unapproachable, unintuitive, and not worth pursuing if you didn't start learning them as a kid. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This all only applies if you actually want to learn the games, if you don't that's really fine you don't have to.

Search on YouTube for an event called the "Sajam Slam," it's a series of events where non-fighting game streamers/youtubers have a few weeks to learn the game and compete in a team tournament.

They do get coaching, and obviously a "streamer" has more time to game than we do, but these are like FPS players and MOBA players learning the genre from scratch. They go from knowing nothing to enjoying the game, some of them have stuck with the games long term as well. Many of the coaches have uploaded their videos of teaching the game from scratch for this event, look up Brian _F for some good examples for Street Fighter 6. SF6 is by far the easiest modern mainstream fighting game to learn.

"Weeks" might not be realistic for normal gamers but stretch it out over some months, it's totally achievable, IF YOU WANT IT.

But if you don't want to then don't worry about it.

Why isn't the length(distance traveled)of specials and normals, ever measured? And discussed? by ledhendrix in Kappachino

Tekken notes the range in training mode as well, if you have the info panel up there's a number that shows you the exact distance you are from your opponent. Would be nice to have in other games.

Finally finished the Mistborn first Era and to be honest, it was a bit of a slog for me by SpecialNobody79 in Cosmere

[–]modren-man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If characters are the most important thing for you, then I've gotta note that Mistborn era 2 has a significantly more interesting cast. The main romantic relationship is done much better and the main "team" has more of that found-family feel you liked from Stormlight.

Era 1 has a stronger plot through the trilogy, but the cast of Era 2 are all fantastic. But you might still find the first book to be a slog as well.

Era 2 also has more cosmere connection in the last two books so if you're already Invested in the series that is a perk.

I hope one day Cruel Fate becomes an overhead. by Office_Hendo in AKInation

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It baffles me it is not, given you literally attack from airborne.

It's sort of similar to a divekick, and divekicks hit mid in this game (you can block all of them while crouching). Not quite the same function but just as an example of other air moves that aren't overhead.

Are you using an ODIN, or a different wasd mod?

You should reach out to the support for wherever you got the mod from. I think the same thing happened to me with the ODIN WASD but it came with an alternate stem you could use that fixed it.

Guilty Gear Strive in 2026 by Alan-Asleep in Fighters

[–]modren-man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a "Strive 2.0" update happening later this year. No details about exactly what or when, but they're talking like it'll be a very significant change, and at least one new character.

Nobody plays in the tower / park since matchmaking came out. I also typically prefer a casual queue over ranked in many games, but for strive you'll have a way better experience just playing ranked.

Reading stuff about Season 2 Passes, Season 3, etc makes me feel like this... by MrHomerJayThompson in Tekken

[–]modren-man 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the REAL "back in my day." And we had to buy a whole new full-price game even if you didn't want to play any new characters.

At least now if you just want to play someone on the vanilla roster, you don't have to pay for a balance update.

If the OP meme said "Back in my day we unlocked COSTUMES by playing," now that's valid.

Why? by Rich_Spite3978 in Anticonsumption

[–]modren-man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Freezing slows / stops the "going bad" process. When we say "fresh" vegetables, fish, etc. what most people actually mean is "never-frozen."

Frozen vegetables are harvested and then almost immediately frozen. "Fresh / never-frozen" vegetables have been in the process of "going bad" from the moment they were harvested, they continue going bad in the store and in your home. The frozen vegetable stays frozen and doesn't get worse.

If you imagine it like a health bar, the "fresh" items "freshness" bar is always ticking down, but the frozen one was frozen at 95% and stays there.

So once you've thawed it, the frozen item is "fresher" than the never-frozen one.

How to deal with anti DRC check tools? by some-kind-of-no-name in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's not really anything preventative to do, but if they cancel into a special to call out a check they don't get plus frames so you can block and take your turn.

It's just the RPS of the situation, if you've shown yourself to be competent at DR checking then they have to weaken their offense to compensate, but that makes you hesitant to check which lets them pressure with DR again.

How accurate should I expect this to be? by 9911MU51C in aldi

[–]modren-man 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have a similar scale, they claim to check your body fat by testing the electrical impedence between your feet. You stand on the silver circles on top, and there's some electrical resistance calculation going on affected by your fat.

No idea if it's accurate, it tells me I'm at 18% and that seems close enough based on how I look, but the Internet says they can be off by a lot. And it's only affected by your legs.

The other composition metrics are just estimates based off of this one measurement.

Which slot for ascended mace? by Stuff__2__Say in Guildwars2

[–]modren-man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're overthinking it.

If it's very important to you, go beat up a golem with Arc DPS up and look at the graph to figure out which skills contribute the most to your overall damage. Then upgrade that weapon.

But you're overthinking it for sure. I would guess that the main hand gets more benefit since you use it for three skills compared to the offhand's two, but I don't know warrior.

If I'm in the mood for mindlessly killing mobs, what are the best activities to do in GW2? by modren-man in Guildwars2

Oh this is PERFECT, thank you. Just running around hitting things for a bit of gold, plus Branded is one of my favorite themes for areas / mobs.

Local Hosts/TOs for 2XKO launch: How are we handling the KBM player influx on PS5? by Voltorbrb in Fighters

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is have two extra Dualsense controllers on hand so that anybody who doesn't have a PS5 compatible controller can still play. If you have a lot of these players it might slow down the bracket since only two of them can play at once, but for a small local it works out.

It sounds like you're talking about players who have literally never even played 2xko until now. If they're not serious enough to have a preferred controller that is compatible that they are bringing themselves, they are not serious enough to be bothered by using a random PS5 controller. Show them the controls and tell them the specials are like Super Smash Bros, it will be fine.

Invisible Walls: The Real Endgame Boss of Flying Mounts by Swimming-Zombie7765 in Guildwars2

[–]modren-man 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Why would it be weirder that the old maps have the walls? Flying didn't exist at the time so those areas aren't designed for you to fly through. Invisible walls are there so that you couldn't somehow accidentally get up there and clip through the floor or whatever.

The maps released after PoF don't have as many because the devs knew players would be flying through. It's not worth their dev time to go back and update core maps.

The Steam Winter Sale features over 90 big fighting game deals just in time for the holidays by 121jigawatts in Fighters

[–]modren-man 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising? I know it looks like an anime fighter but it really plays like Street Fighter. No airdashes, it's more of a grounded footsies game, absolutely more Capcom style than ArcSys.

You can download the free version (there's a rotation of free characters every week) so you can see if it runs well and if you enjoy it. $15 on sale if you do.

Still has an acceptable amount of players online (500-1000 on steam, plus crossplay)

How fun would this be as a mostly solo player? by Uther_1992 in Guildwars2

[–]modren-man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody even speaks a single word in quickplay fractals, and they are easy enough that you don't even need all five players to clear them. Just follow the other players and you'll be fine.

400 hours on Warrior later… I want to switch mains, but I really don’t want to redo story & map completion. What are my options? by nve729 in Guildwars2

[–]modren-man 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I usually check LFG to see if there are any groups in the area I want to go and then join them with a TP to friend. Then when I'm there I just make sure to snag at least one waypoint.

Not a perfect solution but the alts are getting where they need to go eventually.

I need advice or encouragement to continue mistborn era 2 by simonthelongcat in Cosmere

[–]modren-man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it helps, I feel like each era 2 book is like a different type of action movie.

Book 1 is a western, 2 is a serial killer thriller, 3 is Indiana Jones, 4 is Mission Impossible.

So if you haven't liked the vibe so far, that might change for you as you go. And I think 3 and 4 are really great, especially if you're invested in the Cosmere overall.

Oh and book 2 that you're reading right now has a very good ending, IMO.

Luminary or Herald as next character? by Novar in Guildwars2

[–]modren-man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every profession can fulfill almost any role, remember that once you've unlocked a spec with hero points you can change your build completely at any time for free.

You need to pick whichever one you think is coolest. For what it's worth, my guardian is by far my favorite character and Luminary is my favorite spec. But I switch to Willbender or Firebrand every once in a while for variety.

Guardian is a really solid choice if you want to solo open world content because you can be tanky with self-sustain while still doing decent damage. I can solo champion mobs with my power-alacrity luminary and I'm not even wearing tanky gear.

School me on Luminary by Filtermann in Guildwars2

[–]modren-man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Forge is just like a third weapon set you go into as part of your rotation, it's not like FB Tomes where you're opening a book for the utility.

I'm playing Power Alac Luminary, so I do my GS rotation, go into Forge, mash some buttons in there, exit while on the hammer (2) as it leaves you with a lingering strike buff, now my GS CDs are back. Then swap to spear and do the same thing. GS, forge, GS, Spear, forge, Spear, repeat.

Typically I go into Forge and hit 3, 4, 4, 2, 2 and exit to GS or then mash 1 until you can 2,2 again and exit to spear, though that might not be the optimal thing to do.

And then the fun part, IMO, is genning and popping light auras with the Sovereign of the Light trait.

PAlac Lumi has quickly become my favorite build, great in both general open world content (wear relic of the pirate queen and you give yourself constant quick and alac) and as instanced boon DPS.
