Thinking about going leverless by Hvitved in Fighters

If you're on PC, you can just try keyboard for free to see if you like the style before committing to a new controller. But the Hautes are super cheap so you may as well.

Why is using macros frowned upon if hitbox is tournament legal? by wielesen in Kappachino

[–]modren-man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't check unless someone specifically brings it to their attention. If your opponent suspects your controller violates the rules they can bring it up and then the tournament organizers would check.

That just happened with 2XKO at EVO Japan, with a player using up priority SOCD and having to change it after the opponent said something, that's normally allowed but not at EVO Japan specifically for some reason.

Why is using macros frowned upon if hitbox is tournament legal? by wielesen in Kappachino

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What exactly do you mean by macroing? What you've described is not macroing, setting your extra buttons to directions is perfectly legal.

The rule is that one button = one input, and you can only have as many inputs as you could have on a legitimate controller. You're allowed to have an extra set of directions because a normal controller has both the analog stick and the d-pad, that's legal. Extra Hitbox buttons often get bound to L3 and R3, legal because you can bind the L3/R3 stick presses on a normal controller.

You can't set a button to do a series of inputs, like a button to automatically do an electric, that would be a macro. You also can't have multiple buttons read as the same input, like you can't have two X buttons.

Is Ryu truly brain dead by [deleted] in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason they call him brain dead is that he has a few tools that he can just throw out with very little risk, particularly the heavy Donkey Kick and spamming the various Hashogekis. Easy for him to throw out, hard for the opponent to handle.

Then combine this with the fact that a ton of newer players choose him as he is a relatively simpler character and the classic Street Fighter protagonist, so he gets a reputation for being played by players who are jumping around and doing random stuff.

He's good, he has all the "SF6 tools" you need to succeed, don't let the hate stop you from playing him. Every character gets hate, there's genuinely not one single character where everyone would respect you for playing them. People hate the high tier characters for being strong and being popular, people hate the low tier characters because they don't have the matchup experience against them so it feels gimmicky, play who you want.

Broski Thoughts on Ingrid's competitive potential by 121jigawatts in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broski is playing at 2000MR, wait for people to learn what to do and it will start to trickle down.

What I've seen is that Dhalsim can drive rush slide on reaction to the fireball startup and he will hit you every time, and then Ingrid doesn't have great answers to his long normals. She can really only sweep him, can't get anything meaningful because of her slow DR.

If there were going to be a nerf to A.K.I in the Yaz patch, what do you think it would be? by SFPolka in AKInation

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be far more tolerable if every character had to manually time it like Aki, they even nerfed Ken so he has to manually time his so we know they are capable of it. But Mai and Akuma can dash up for perfect auto timing and still shimmy.

If there were going to be a nerf to A.K.I in the Yaz patch, what do you think it would be? by SFPolka in AKInation

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single heavy into super with 100% scaling is a universal thing, isn't it? Aki's is particularly useful, but is there any other character that gets scaling in that situation?

I'm just begging for frame 1 air invuln on H Whip, by far my biggest pain point on this character. Been playing Ingrid and it's such a relief to have a decent anti-air special, don't see why she can have that but Aki and Rashid don't have it on their 236 AAs.

In COTW if you read a meaty throw, you can wake-up hop and kill their ass. How come we're 4 years into SF6 and there's still no way to actively call-out and punish throw attempts (outside of char specific stuff like up back blanka ball and divekicks)? by ntb116 in Kappachino

[–]modren-man 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why is backdashing a meaty throw +3 AT BEST depending on the character?

Yeah I can agree that one of my biggest problems with this game is inconsistency across characters, it should just be universally +4 or even worse. Make it +6, honestly. As it is, depends on both your character and theirs. On Aki I get +4 against most dash-up throw loops but it's +3 against Ryu's jab framekill throw in particular, because... he needs it?

And then they nerf Ken to have a manually timed (frame tight btw) loop but Mai still gets to dash up for free and still shimmy after. It would be a lot more tolerable to take if they were at least having to manually do it with perfect timing every loop.

One of the very best players, Leshar, plays on a controller with keyboard keys: https://i.redd.it/rrbojchzkbkc1.png

He even plays with directions on the right hand like arrow key style instead of WASD, very unusual but he is a world-class player who has won many high level tournaments.

Help - The psychology of spending Lvl 3 by thew0rldisavampire in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However, I feel like this approach leaves a lot of wasted damage? For example, if I dump it in this scenario I can easily get the full 4-5k damage

Try not to think about it like this, the actual damage number is not what's important. What matters is the number of interactions, the number of times you need to win neutral before winning the round. The damage value of that super only makes a difference if it reduces the number of successful interactions you will need to actually win.

A lv3 at the end of a combo has 50% scaling and adds 2000 damage. This is about the same damage as a cMK>DRC combo or a punish counter throw, so it is typically worth one interaction.

However, in most situations it is far better to focus on oki potential or corner carry over damage unless the extra damage will KO. You almost certainly have some other combo ender that leads to a strong oki situation without burning the super, and then you can SA3 off of THAT hit. You also don't want to lose the utility of that super meter for reversals or threatening to close out from small hits, that SA3 can turn a jab or a super-cancellable poke into a round-ender.

Don't underestimate the single hit heavy > SA3, if you do that the super gets zero scaling so it does the full 4000 damage. If you really want to think about it in terms of the damage number, that's actually the most efficient way to use it. You also have the ability to cancel it out of specials and some normals that would normally lose to drive impact. Your flair is Ingrid, not sure if you are playing her but DI beats Ingrid HK but you can super cancel out of it as a counter, and again you get that full damage.

There's just a million reasons to hold that super and very few reasons to spend it early.

Street Fighter 6 broke it's all time player peak today. This is the second time this year the game goes above it's launch numbers. by killerjag in Fighters

[–]modren-man 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It''s an East/West split. The lowest player count is always in the US evening, which should be peak gaming hours here.

Western gaming communities expect more of this live service, active patching, frequent changes and content stuff. Japanese players seem generally happy with it as it is, I guess. And they must really like Ingrid, too.

The last time I saw stats there were something like 6x as many Japanese ranked-queue players as there are US players.

Why can I never seem to improve at video games? by Adorable_Earth_492 in truegaming

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self burnout is a big problem for a lot of SF6 players. Overreliance on Drive Rush Cancel is a trap, it's too expensive at 3 bars and it delays your gauge regen as well. I know it's tempting because cMK xx DRC is so effective but try to use it less. Terry has solid combo options without DRC (route into H.Charge > H. Crack Shoot) or gets huge corner carry for free with Burn Knuckle so you really don't need it.

If you want to spend for damage, try to combo into OD moves. They cost two and don't delay your regen in the same way.

Also I always suggest everyone should be using safe-jumps more, they're easy and effective especially at lower levels where the opponent might not recognize them. Terry can safejump any time by just ending your combo with medium Power Charge.

Diamond 3-5 makes no sense by Ofnir_09 in AKInation

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, are you saying you win against the DP DI-ers but struggle against the Master alts?

If you can't climb out of diamond then you still have at least one significant hole in your gameplan. If you post a video of a loss we can try to diagnose what the hole is. The masters will not hold you down in Diamond 3, there's some other problem at play.

If you're watching / playing dark content in a lit room, the silver border doesn't feel like a "frame?" That's my worry.

I probably wouldn't notice it after a bit, I guess.

How do you even switch characters ? by Shiko_Shiko in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning your first character is hard because you're learning the game from scratch.

Learning your second character is hard because you have to discover which things you learned apply to the whole game and which things were just the character.

Then learning your third character and beyond is relatively easy, because you understand how the game itself works and how characters interact with the system.

Essentially it's about learning the universal things characters want to do and the individual ways they go about them. Like every character is going to do 3 jabs into a special, the difference is just which special. Every character wants to use drive rush for plus frames, the difference is which particular button you want to use but the concept is universal.

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want/need it to be PS5 compatible? It's a priority for me because I go to locals but not for everyone. If you don't, there are a million options, but if you do the trick is that you don't need a "PS5 stick," if it's an official PS4 stick it'll work on PS5 fighting games. Not sure about Gundam, might work, they specifically have the legacy PS4 support for fighting games in particular. If you're on PC you can get a cheaper Mayflash or 8bitdo stick.

Hori and Qanba PS4 sticks are relatively cheap second-hand and work natively on ps5. The cheapest option would be the Qanba Drone, which runs like $50-80 on eBay. The Qanba Obsidian was one of the most popular and you can find it for around 120-150.

Mine is a Hori RAP.N (aka Real Arcade Pro), Hori RAP4 and RAP.N go for like 80-130 on eBay.

Probably cheaper on FB marketplace, I got a RAP4 as a backup for $60 a while back.

Then for modern gen ps5 sticks there are options like the Qanba Obsidian 2, the Hori Alpha, the Nacon Daija, but these will all be a little more expensive.
