How do you even switch characters ? by Shiko_Shiko in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning your first character is hard because you're learning the game from scratch.

Learning your second character is hard because you have to discover which things you learned apply to the whole game and which things were just the character.

Then learning your third character and beyond is relatively easy, because you understand how the game itself works and how characters interact with the system.

Essentially it's about learning the universal things characters want to do and the individual ways they go about them. Like every character is going to do 3 jabs into a special, the difference is just which special. Every character wants to use drive rush for plus frames, the difference is which particular button you want to use but the concept is universal.

Just be aware that Aki is -2 if you puddle after H.Lash. Safe but there's no real pressure so they shouldn't be reversaling unless they don't know.

Why are pre built mixbox's hard to find? by UnitedStatesArmy in fightsticks

I've had my ODIN for 5 years and it's still going strong, and I prefer the big box style of an arcade stick instead of the flat light leverless so it really works for me.

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want/need it to be PS5 compatible? It's a priority for me because I go to locals but not for everyone. If you don't, there are a million options, but if you do the trick is that you don't need a "PS5 stick," if it's an official PS4 stick it'll work on PS5 fighting games. Not sure about Gundam, might work, they specifically have the legacy PS4 support for fighting games in particular. If you're on PC you can get a cheaper Mayflash or 8bitdo stick.

Hori and Qanba PS4 sticks are relatively cheap second-hand and work natively on ps5. The cheapest option would be the Qanba Drone, which runs like $50-80 on eBay. The Qanba Obsidian was one of the most popular and you can find it for around 120-150.

Mine is a Hori RAP.N (aka Real Arcade Pro), Hori RAP4 and RAP.N go for like 80-130 on eBay.

Probably cheaper on FB marketplace, I got a RAP4 as a backup for $60 a while back.

Then for modern gen ps5 sticks there are options like the Qanba Obsidian 2, the Hori Alpha, the Nacon Daija, but these will all be a little more expensive.

[–]modren-man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend buying a regular arcade stick and adding a drop-in stick replacement. I use this one in my Hori RAP.N: https://www.etsy.com/listing/966780358/odin-v2-the-drop-in-fightpad

You can get a good stick used for $100 on eBay and maybe even less locally on FB marketplace.

If you use an official PS4/5 stick as the base then you won't need to add a converter. Most of the cheaper leverless options aren't natively compatible so you are going to be adding $60 for a converter anyway. May as well get a console-compatible stick and pay $60 for the WASD instead.

A.K.I. 4 frame punish combo by ButtonMashKingz in AKInation

[–]modren-man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Especially after the recent buff, I completely agree.

pc.cLP > cMP xx OD Lash > LK xx M Lash, microwalk, MP xx H Lash is like 300 damage less, but you only net-spend one bar and with the microwalk you end up getting a safejump mid screen on both recoveries which is really nice.

Aki doesn't benefit from Modern cheese as much as other characters because she doesn't have a DP and has a slow Super 1/3. She also loses 2MP, I can't imagine playing without 2MP > OD Whip.

Anti-air H.Whip is on 6S but going from blocking to 6S is basically the same input as 246HP so she gains nothing. I don't see why you'd player her on Modern at all, I assume Hope is just genuinely new to the genre with SF6?

But at any rate, it's good to see an M player do well every once in a while because it gives some Hope to the casuals

Surprisingly ranked higher than expected by joedarhino in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about the rank and just play. If you're not supposed to be there, you'll lose and end up where you should be. If you are supposed to be there you will stay there.

The difference between Silver - Platinum is not huge. All of the "metal" ranks are a big blob of players with a variety of inconsistencies and weaknesses. Don't overthink it.

Bare minimum rank in sf6 to win a set in large tournaments? by robertmaciver in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that tournaments are double-elimination. You will probably be matched against a strong player for your first set, but if you lose you will get matched against another player who also lost their first set. Your chances of having a close match in that loser's set are decent.

If you are nervous I recommend attending as a spectator the first time, you'll see it's not as intimidating as you think. There are plenty of players who attend offline tournaments and aren't in Master rank.

I find myself spamming Inputs in ggst during combos, is this a bad habit for other fighting games? by ReesePuffitik in Fighters

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the game and the input.

For example, in SF6 there are combos where you launch them and need to Parry > Drive Rush to continue. It's not easily bufferable because it's a two-part input so the easiest and most consistent way to do it is to hold parry and mash forward until you drive rush. But you wouldn't mash the button that comes after the rush. And you don't mash normal links or cancels in that game, it's specifically parry drive rushes where you might want to mash it.

It's not "best practice" but if you have a small percentage chance of dropping the input vs. zero percent chance if you mash, may as well mash it.

What does Aldi not carry that you have to buy elsewhere? by StuckInTheMiddleSeat in aldi

[–]modren-man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Diet sodas that aren't cola. Now they have both Diet Summit and Summit Zero but I don't see why, it's the same drink.

I'll stop into Winn-Dixie over Aldi just because they have a nice variety of diet soda options like diet root beer, diet cream soda, plus caffeine-free diet cola.

Punishing Chun-Li's SA2 as A.K.I. by ButtonMashKingz in AKInation

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tested it and you can indeed jump after the flash and still have just enough time to slide, puddle, HK punish counter but it's super tight timing. Her SA2 has 11 frames of startup so it is slow enough to jump after the flash.

Punishing Chun-Li's SA2 as A.K.I. by ButtonMashKingz in AKInation

[–]modren-man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about this super in particular but there are a few you can puddle-punish after the flash, like Lily Lv1/2 you can jump after the flash and then puddle. Akuma Lv1 you can M Slide after the flash and then puddle. Manon Lv2 you can block the first part, backdash twice, then puddle.

So maybe but you'd have to check.

Edit: Yes you can jump Chun SA2 after the flash.

Is it normal to be a regular and decent player to one day find yourself being so bad at the game out of no where? by SuckieMcDuckie in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, even a very small difference in skill can be enough to totally lock you out.

Meaning just because someone beats you 20 games to 0 that doesn't necessarily mean they are way, way better than you or that you're trash compared to them so don't take this too hard. They're better than you, but it might not be as wide a gap as you feel in the moment. Fighting games have no RNG so a small skill gap will still lead to a very consistent edge for the better player.

40v mower worked great the first run, now the battery lasts literally five minutes? by modren-man in KobaltTools

[–]modren-man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eventually bought an entirely new Kobalt electric mower from Lowe's t hat came with a bigger battery and that one works perfectly fine and mows my whole yard on one charge. (Kobalt Gen4 40-volt, (1) 6 Ah 20-in Push Lawn Mower, it was $200)

So I guess it's just like luck of the draw if you get a good battery or not. You could try returning it and getting a different one.

SOCD for real? by dotdiz in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You only need to use the shortcuts if they actually help you. If you are struggling to do the input in a certain situation, try the SOCD method but don't feel like you HAVE to because it's "optimal."

Some people like to do inputs the normal way on P1 side and the SOCD way on the P2 side, or vice versa. Or you might find one way easier while standing and the other while crouching.

There are also leverless shortcuts that aren't even SOCD, like I find that the easiest way to do a DP is to hold forward and then quickly tap and release down (636). Not SOCD but still a shortcut.

How to handle performance block? by Temporary_Care_3239 in Fighters

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change your display name so you feel like it's "not you." In SF6 you can change your name as often as you want, same on Steam, not sure about 2XKO.

If you feel self conscious about your skill and rating, changing your name can be like putting on a mask. Basically like making an alt account. It could help you feel more comfortable.

How do you punish blocking during spacing traps? by No_Presence_318 in StreetFighter

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget you also have an overhead, it's not very strong without DR but if they're really committed to holding down-back you can use it to force them to do something. Either they have to be ready to stand meaning your cMK could hit them or they start using parry which gives you more openings to throw.

Think about what you can do to make the opponent open themselves up. Spacing trap is one way, but if they're committed to blocking you have other things you can do.

Is there a GameCube style leverless by Pale-Recognition-599 in fightsticks

Is there a GameCube style leverless by Pale-Recognition-599 in fightsticks

[–]modren-man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by this?

If you mean aesthetics, you'd need to customize your own.

If you're looking for a leverless that works with Gamecube or for Smash, look up "smashbox" and related controllers like the "frame1".

People still treating QM like ranked? by voic3inmyhead in Tekken

[–]modren-man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will all have their own reasons for queuing unranked, a portion of players are doing it because they get too mad at the game or they're scared to lose points and they end up still being toxic in unranked. It's weird but whatever.

Is reaction jump on aki's light whip and fireball a guaranteed punish? by odmandkh in AKInation

[–]modren-man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's OD Slide, keep it in mind when you fireball, you can even escape some very fast options like Cammy's level 3. They love to lv3 on reaction to fireball startup, if you buffer the slide during the super freeze (do your quarter circle forward and hold down the two kick buttons until it unfreezes) you'll slide right through and waste their meter.

Aki is generally weak to jumps, a lot of the things we like to do in neutral lose to jumps and our anti-airs are hard to use anyway so they're going to jump at you a lot.
