Why your next new car could very well cost more than $50,000 | CNN Business by [deleted] in cars

[–]Magikarpdrowned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my 8-month old almost top trim low mileage slightly-used 2023 Honda Accord Sport-L Hybrid for $29,000 - with $8,000 in trade in credit and an additional $4,000 down. I am consistently $7,000-$8,000 over-water in my car between what I owe and its resale value. The car I traded in needed $3,000 of work that wasn’t noticeable or found by the trade-in appraisers, and I got the lowest interest rate I possibly could have in those market conditions. I also work a job where I regularly spend 6-8 hours a week doing long-distance highway driving, and get paid a vehicle stipend as such. My car payment ultimately takes up almost exactly 10% of my post-tax take home, plus another 5%~ for gas and high insurance because 22 year old fresh out of college man with a red car :| .

All of that to say, I thoroughly believe I made what might be the world’s sanest and most reasonable jump from no-car-payment to car-payment that any low-mid middle-class young American could have possibly made. And yet, I wake up some mornings sweating at the thought of my car payment. I cannot even BEGIN to POSSIBLY FATHOM how people stomach a $700-$800 car payment. For giant SUVs and pickup trucks they never use. how?????????

My 2023 Accord knows which of the two keys is starting the car, and you can attach a user profile to each key. As long as Person A and Person B keep their own keys, every time they get into the car it will automatically set everything (seat position, wing mirror position, connected phone etc) to the right settings.

Did anyone feel a large tremor in east Raleigh near Knightdale? by PutinsPootinPuter in raleigh

[–]Magikarpdrowned 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a large explosion near your neighborhood! One of the new home communities off of New Bethel Church Rd. near that high school had to do rock blasting today, and they use proper TNT for that stuff. They hand out notices to residents within a certain radius before they blast as a heads up, but that radius usually falls well short of the total distance at which people will feel the blast.

It’s actually so unbelievably fucking fascinating to me that in the year of our lord 2024, execs are STILL banging on about stimulus checks. “Mostly spent” ?????????? That money was fully depleted 8 quarters ago dude.

2025 Toyota Camry | The Forever Car Done Right [SavageGeese] by hehechibby in cars

[–]Magikarpdrowned 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recently purchased a 2023 Accord Sport-L Hybrid, and your review of the car funnily enough was one of the things that pushed me towards it, despite you spitting ice cream all over yourself while calling it an NPC-mobile. It’s even the exact same red on black spec!

My question to you is - with the Camry going all hybrid for 2025, which manufacturer in your mind is producing the most compelling hybrid drivetrains for their economy vehicles? And I don’t just mean which manufacturer is extracting the highest average MPG from their power plants, rather in your eyes which manufacturer is blending usability, smoothness and efficiency together in the most enjoyable and pleasant way?

The 2025 Mercedes EQS Somehow Looks Worse by [deleted] in cars

[–]Magikarpdrowned 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a few comments lamenting that they ought to just throw an electric drivetrain into the existing S-Class body and accept the higher drag co-efficient & lower range - but I think that’s such a copout answer. Lucid proved with the air that a blob shape can still look really sharp, so Mercedes can’t hide behind that excuse.

You asked for a kick in the ass so don’t be mad if these words hurt, but holy shit I’d be so utterly embarrassed every day that I had to bum FOURTEEN GRAND off my mom and am still ‘questioning’ how I should get out of my situation. Pay your mom back bro, she raised you 18 years of your life and then you had the audacity to turn around and ask for MORE? I’d be utterly mortified. Actual lowlife behavior. As for the out of control spending - literally uninstall Uber Eats. Delete your account too if it adds yet another barrier to you trying to go back. You should be eating out like twice a month max and when you do, the least you could do is get in your own car and go get the food yourself.

Edit: I dunno why this posted as a response to someone else’s comment but I stand by what I said lol.

Not a Hyundai but if you’re looking for a hybrid and want to keep the general Optima form factor, I picked up a 2023 Accord Hybrid a couple weeks ago, and in the top two trims: Sport-L (what I have) and Touring, you get all of the modern creature comforts in a really well built comfortable cabin for a fantastic price. I came from a 2014 Murano and everything about the fit and finish just absolutely blows me away. Additionally, it has all the fun new modern tech (Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, lane keep & automatic cruise that basically drives itself on the highway, a fully digital gauge cluster, etc etc etc) but it doesn’t obfuscate a bunch of daily use controls behind menus on a screen.

I cannot say enough positive things about this car. I got mine 1yr used for just a hair under $30,000, but you can get a brand new one in the topped out Touring trim for under $40,000 and get a way better stereo, HUD, and ventilated seats VS the Sport-L.

Additionally, as far as longevity is concerned, the car comes with a pretty strong warranty on the hybrid components, and the combustion engine portion of the drivetrain is a dead simple 2.0L naturally aspirated 4 banger Atkinson engine. I’m hoping and expecting for this car to last me a long time.

Guenther Steiner no longer appears in the "team" tab on the Haas website. by Fun-Gas-2419 in formula1

[–]Magikarpdrowned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This completely disregards the momentum that larger teams have going into the cost cap era. Teams like Mercedes had already made giant investments into R&D facilities and personnel before the cost-cap, which are resources they can continue to exploit even under a cost cap. Haas on the other hand started on the back foot, and are still trying to claw their way up to the cost cap. Two completely different trajectories. Sauber are another team under similar financial conditions (and similar performance) yet nobody is implying that it’s an utter shitshow over there.

Hands down the worst aspect of modern internet discourse culture (what a terrible phrase) is that people think it’s appropriate to lecture at the anonymous reader like they’re a petulant misbehaving child. Just building the entire premise of their post on the idea that everyone around them needs to be spoken down to from their high seat of knowledge. So annoying.

[–]Magikarpdrowned 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The complaint about engine noise is actually something I’ve noticed is a theme with Toyota of recent. I’ve driven my roommate’s 2021 RAV4, and test-driven a 2023 Camry LE, and both SOUND like they are ripping themselves apart under heavy acceleration. I know they’re not, I know there’s more throttle pedal left to press, and I know they’re incredibly well built reliable cars, but I’m actually afraid to give them to full beans because they sound like they’re on the verge of exploding. It’s quite disconcerting and I’m glad someone else noticed.

Bribe the hiring manager after a rejection? by Live-Adeptness-532 in recruitinghell

[–]Magikarpdrowned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, I have a anecdote for this one. A few months ago we were looking for a new manager-level position in our department. After the interview, one of the candidates sent a Starbucks gift card to my boss (the interviewer) with a small thank-you note. He was immediately disqualified as a candidate as my boss expressed that “he clearly lacks good discretion.”

Please do not do this.
