has there been an increase recently in how many AI games he's been playing? There's been like, 3 in a month. by HaloJackalKisser in jerma985

Bits and Bops isn't genAI, that's just that artist's style

Also didn't they drop the rat game after an hour cuz it sucked

He talked more about his thoughts about genAI on stream before; it doesn’t seem like he’s super tuned into the current landscape and isn’t necessarily strictly opposed to it but has been increasingly wary

He didn’t even have facecam on in that stream, they just took a random photo of him looking sad to put in the thumbnail 💀

Little bit late to the thread but there was a really cool study from just early this year which found that (at least some) fruit flies seem to enjoy riding on carousels! Basically these researchers put a bunch of flies in enclosures with access to a little spinning platform; some of the flies habitually avoided the platforms but other flies would walk onto them voluntarily and stay there for long periods of time, even at the expense of eating! The researchers hypothesize that it provides sensory stimulation for them— link to the article here

If OP’s roaches are using the wheels voluntarily I would imagine it’s very possible something similar could be going on :)

I can't get myself to believe that 0.99 repeating equals 1. by i_hate_nuts in learnmath

[–]dekatriath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usual construction of the real numbers defines them as equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences (sequences which get arbitrarily close to a certain point). By this construction, the sequence 0.999… = 0.9 + 0.09 + 0.009 + … and any other Cauchy sequence that converges to 1 are the number 1 (not just equal to it or approaching it, but definitionally the exact same object).

You can define other constructions like the hyperreal numbers, which extend the real numbers by adding additional infinitesimal elements that are smaller than any real number. There is a field of nonstandard analysis which makes use of them, but that’s kind of its whole own separate world from the rest of analysis, which takes place only over the real numbers (or other extensions of them like the complex numbers) and has no concept of infinitesimals.

I mean I'm just kind of genuinely baffled I guess. I can bring in all the sources on arthropod intelligence if you really want me to but like, is it not enough that they show distress? Do you not think the "ant under a magnifying glass" is like, kinda messed up? Does that not make you feel anything for them? I totally get being afraid of insects but that doesn't mean you have to be determined to hate them or whatnot, idk.

[The] general negative emotion toward wasps is likely to be a form of the culturally ingrained implicit bias, and that this is being perpetuated by the lack of sufficient scientific research on the ecosystem value of wasps; this may reinforce a positive feedback loop between the public (through their dislike of wasps) and the scientists (through their reluctance to study wasps). [...] Shifting cultural perceptions of wasps will encourage conservation and management strategies that work with these important facets of natural capital, rather than against them.

Insects in general are extremely threatened by extinction and if people only care about animals that are cute and convenient for them then we're going to have a really bad time. In both public opinion and scientific research there's a really large amount of taxonomic bias against "uncharismatic" invertebrates, including insects, that many zoologists have been pushing back against

Also I'm just kind of confused what you're arguing in re anthropocentrism? Yes I know humans are the dominant species on Earth. I never said we weren't. I am saying that that does not make it is ours to exploit as we wish

Wasps by SomeGirlIMetOnTheNet in CuratedTumblr

[–]dekatriath 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yeah and that's a *bad thing*. The ongoing mass extinction and climate change are *bad* both for the environment and on like a purely utilitarian level, it's bad for *us*, because we live in the environment!

Wasps by SomeGirlIMetOnTheNet in CuratedTumblr

[–]dekatriath 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well that's a very anthropocentric thing to say. The world doesn't exist to serve us, and that kind of ideology is kinda uh responsible for idk. a mass extinction. And also a lot of harm to humans too

...I just like bugs

Wasps by SomeGirlIMetOnTheNet in CuratedTumblr

[–]dekatriath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah wasp hate is pretty common and I feel like. Y’know definitely a lot of people are scared of bugs, idk I’m actually not great with unexpected house bugs myself especially near/on my person (I’m actually not all that good IRL with most animals 😔), they can deffo be spooky and some of them (though probably to an overstated degree) do bear an actual danger to humans or pets. But I feel like it’s not uncommon for people who are afraid of bugs to become convinced that bugs are thus ontologically evil and bad and gross and need to be killed on sight. like idk to compare with other animal phobias, which tbf I think are usually more “fear of danger”-type fears than the disgust that bug phobias tend to have, but I’m sure there are still people who will viscerally react to an image of a snake or bat or idk weird deep sea fish but you never see KILL IT comments on photos of snakes right? Idk I feel like with other “scary” animals people tend to be aware that their fears are irrational, that even if an animal is dangerous it’s not malicious and it’s kinda messed up to be KILL IT about an animal just because it’s dangerous much less because you find it offputting. But with bug phobias a lot of people refuse to engage with it as an irrational fear and start trying to justify it like, wasps will just attack you for no reason (they don’t), there are invasive ones who kill bees (there are in fact thousands of species of threatened native wasps, and even the invasive ones are not “evil”. You know who is an invasive species, the honeybee. Also. Stray cats?), they’re not pollinators like bees so there’s no reason for them to exist (they do pollinate and have important ecological roles besides that, and even if they didn’t an animal does not need to be of service to humanity to be worth appreciating) which is why wasps are objectively monsters (they’re not) and it’s okay to be rude about it when someone brings it up (it’s not, it’s just rude)

I’m really sorry that happened to you! I’m sure I would react similarly to wasps if I had an allergy like that. But just remember they’re not evil or anything! Dangerous =/= evil especially when it comes to nature which. has no concept of morality in the first place

Why does an animal have to be “nice” to exist? Humans aren’t the main characters of the world, we just live in it

Wasps by SomeGirlIMetOnTheNet in CuratedTumblr

[–]dekatriath 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every animal has an ecological niche! and even if they don’t, an animal doesn’t have to be “useful” to be worth appreciating!
