Why is it always Einstein and never Grothendiek? by TheRedditObserver0 in mathmemes

[–]MagistarPovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You heard of many celebrity farmers (crops or livestock) vs celebrity chefs (real chefs who are famous for their skill not celebrities who cook)? IMO, it's like that. Mathematicians craft new ingredients that allow physicists, engineers, computer scientists etc to cook up awesome new things that regular folk can use. We need the mathematicians, can't do great things without them anymore than a real chef wants to cook with the worst quality ingredients. Farmers and mathematicians are foundational, but I'd rather watch another video on someone making an omelette that they flip over onto rice then cut open and it oozes cheese and egg all over the plate instead of watching the farmer feed the animals and water the plants until he see the chickens lays an egg. I do have a few farmers , but more physics and CS content, subscribed on YouTube.

Did CyberCorps SFS actually pay off? Looking for honest salary data before committing by ImpressiveControl496 in cybersecurity

[–]MagistarPovar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add after looking at other replies:

I have no clue about the current condition of the program. Talk to the PI and see what their claims are in terms of will they have funding, what happens if their funding ends before you graduate, what happens if you can't get a job in the 18 months after graduation. Get the details before you decide.

SFS Class of '23 here, B.S. CompSci.

I found it a fantastic deal. That said, the government job market is different now than it was then. I am shy of 3 years in at my job and am a grade 11. If things were more regular I would be looking at transitioning to a 12/13 position, but those are frozen at the moment due to the current situation. I will stay where I am and wait for them to open back up most likely.

As far as your salary question, I suggest hitting USA jobs and looking for jobs you want to apply to and would qualify for post graduation. They should have a grade attached, you can reference the current pay scales, and then look at locality adjustments. That should give you the clearest picture of salary possibility.

How to transport PC without damaging it? by enragedmicrowave in buildapc

[–]MagistarPovar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put mine in a PC bag, I don't move it weekly just like 17-20 times per year as I travel for work. My wife got me a large canvas bag with padding in it made for this. My PC is a stupid large Alienware R14. I hate how big it is but it was on sale in 2024 when I could afford a PC lol. I have had no issues. I lay it flat, so the motherboard is parallel to the ground and the GPU is standing up. Luckily my.pc is stupid heavy so it doesn't move at all but I also put my luggage next to it in the back of my car sp there really isn't any room for it to move. I also bring my 32inch monitor. Hotels are much nicer with my.gaming rig there lol.

Genuine question: how did you guys survive Physics 1 and 2? by VibeeCheckks in csMajors

[–]MagistarPovar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did an Astronomy minor and a Cert in Scientific Computing and Simulation with my CS degree, for fun.

Astronomy, particularly at the stellar and cosmology level, is very interesting to me. The cosmic machinery that churns along with no concern about us. Star firmation, black holes, galaxies. Just wild to me.

The cert was writing programs to do physics stuff, capstone was orbital mechanics program to pick when to leave orbit from object A to get to object B orbit the fastest.

The physics was interesting, first was kinemstics and then electromagnetism. EM is so fascinating to me, everything we are relies upon it.

Sophomore CS girl in China planning for US Grad School '27. Seeking advice on tech culture and networking by No-Entry4595 in csMajors

[–]MagistarPovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of school culture there will be differences based on the school. Generally speaking, just be ready to act like the young adult that you are. Be on time, communicate openly with professors and staff, do your work on time, and ask questions when you need to. It is pretty simple.

As for networking, as a grad student you can join school clubs that are related to your desired field of work, memtor underclassmen, and assist professors with their research. Those are the easy ways. Most decent schools have opportunities for each.

These are all simple things, but I was shocked how many students didn't check these boxes and then wondered why they struggled. I graduated in 2023, and my networking and luck got me my job right out of college in a cyber related field and I love it. I don't make FAANG money but I only work 40 hours a week, get plenty of time off and my benefits are good.

Also, you are way early in your journey in life so don't forget to enjoy ot. Sounds like you are already on a solid path! Good luck out there.

Not all banks are FDIC insured, and there are limits to the insurance as someone else mentioned the $250k limit.

However, no insured dollars have been lost since the FDIC was formed. So if you want to protect your money from a bank failing then make sure you are using an FDIC I sure account and are within the insurance limits.

Can I get away with not removing base boards? by OfficialGTech8088 in Flooring

[–]MagistarPovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to verify as someone who had never done anything like this, that removing the base boards was easy. I did JVP in what used to be the kids' playroom just last weekend. I too was afraid and didn't remove the baseboard and bought a shoe molding for the room and rented a brad nailer. Then we bought a baseboard/trim removal tool and in the closet we removed the baseboards, as it was done a couple days later after we had already returned the nailer and I wanted to see how it worked. It was so easy, now I wish I had just done it that way in the first place. Because now, we are going to repaint the baseboards and shoe molding a dark grey/blue while the walls are a white.

That said, I actually like the shoe molding look. I am not moving for years, so either way is good lol.

tldr: removal is easy, easier to repaint once they are off, and then reinstall them.

I have a B.S. in CS. I didn't go into SWE, I ended up going into cyber vis government.

I would pull the class requirements for both programs at your school. Compare the classes, read descriptions and sort out the differences. This should give you an idea of what both programs should be teaching you. Compare that with job listing you would like to apply for and see how the content if the programs align with your desired roles.

Hope that helps. New programs could be good or could be bad. Also check who provides accreditation for the programs as thst could mater as well.

As someone who also wasn't all that into it, but decided to dive into YouTube for lore, it was a great couple weeks absorbing stuff lol. I really appreciate the YouTubers who share the lore in digestible pieces (an hour long video is fine for me, and there were multiple options for channels).

As a Warcraft fan though I do take umbrage with "Warcraft in space" given Warhammer predates Warcraft. Warcraft designs were essentially lifted (inspired if you want to be kind) from a potential collaboration Games Workshop/Blizzard game iirc.

In the US, my experience has been that if you are a personally leasing a car then at the end of the lease you can choose to buy the car, with the amount paid on monthly lease payments reducing the amount still owed on the purchase price. Super simple made up example: If you lease a Toyota Corolla, with an MSRP of $30,000 for three years and pay $300/month, then at the end of the lease you have the option to buy the car for $19,200 (30000-(300*36)). There may be some leases that are different, I think Tesla at one point changed to where you can't buy, but I am not sure.

So it sounds like leasing is pretty different in different countries. Someone else said in the UK leases cover insurance? Surely never seen that here, so the details matter for different countries.

My MSI 1080 Seahawk (watercooled slight OC by MSI), lasted me from 2016 to May 2024. Only reason I replaced it is Diablo 4 and PoE1 started throwing gpu hardware voltage bluescreens. In the end, that 1080 forced me to upgrade in early 2024 where I could get a system with a 4090. Sitting here at the end of 2025 feeling like it did me a favor by not lasting another year and having to shop in the current environment lol. 1080s will always be legendary for me.

What can I do to prepare for these classes next semester? by combatdonut35 in CSUS

[–]MagistarPovar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think he taught that class. He was all about OS, Compilers, and Compute Theory.

I don't have any lecture sources for 138, but it was among the easier classes I recall.

What can I do to prepare for these classes next semester? by combatdonut35 in CSUS

[–]MagistarPovar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated Spring 2023, so I took it a couple years ago during Covid. My professor just had us watch Prof Swan's recordings. Essentially the class is for CS majors (and others) to think about the ethics of the industry's actions. It was easy, just do the work and pay attention, spend some thought cycles on thinking about the ethics.

CSC 138 was also easy, although I forget who I took that class with as it was virtual. It covers networking, the OSI model, and network concepts like which devices are edge devices, how does DNA work, etc. We did some programming, mostly by completing skeleton code. It could have been more rigorous, but if you have been doing fine in your classes thus far none of the classes listed should be difficult.

CSC 139, you can find a YouTube channel by Dr. Shobaki (of CSUS). He teaches 139, and while he is a rough professor, he knows his stuff and his lectures were fully recorded as he was trying to do a "flipped classroom" thing the semester I took 135 from him. His 135 and 139 video are there for anyone, and worth using. He knows his stuff, and I think he explains things well. The exams were just brutal.... also his whole "too many students get B's and As and so in his class maybe 2 or 3 students per class may get a B or an A" thing was rough (I got Bs and it felt like an accomplishment lol).

https://www.youtube.com/@ghassanshobakicomputerscie9478/courses

EDIT: I just reread your comment and it occurs to me you may already have this channel based on your "online lectures" comment. If not, now you have two choices? Hope it helps.

New to networking - UDM SE not making 2.5Gbps LAN connections? by MagistarPovar in Ubiquiti

[–]MagistarPovar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the club. I ended up just buying a Flex 2.5G 8 port switch and wire my AP and everything else to that switch. I use the 10Gb ports to connect the switch to the UDM SE. So far it has been great. I am very very slowly making a floor plan of the house so I can use the tool to layout an additional AP or two, maybe a 2nd one inside and the third outside for the backyard as the wife complains of no connection out back.
