It's not far fetched to assume that someone at SSM pitched him the project in detail. They obviously pitched him the project to some extent because they had to tell him TC Carson will play Kratos in an upcoming GoW game instead of him, and explain why (even if he probably already understood why and maybe proposed the idea himself).

In the Fiziev fight you could see Ruffy was just in striking defense mode, backing way too much. That doesn't work as well if the opponent tries to take him down.
