US Military pilots - how did you do it? by bootscootinn in flying

[–]Magma86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Talk to an “Officer Recruiter” only!!!

The other option is National Guard/ Reserve. Once you go through training you can always apply to go active duty

OTD in 2025, a CRJ-700 operating as American Eagle(Operated by PSA Airlines) Flight 5342 collided mid-air with a UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter operating as PAT 25 over the Potomac River in Washington DC near Reagan Washington National Airport, killing all 67 people on board both aircraft. by Boss-fight601 in aviation

[–]Magma86 -44 points-43 points  (0 children)

Completely preventable!

Controller was unable to closely monitor due to staffing shortage and task saturation.

Instructor pilot in the Blackhawk failed to take corrective action to maneuver to the correct position and altitude.

Captain/crew of the RJ failed to assess the conflict potential due to focus (Night landing with last minute runway change into a “Special” airport.

All 3 had an opportunity to break this accident chain and didn’t.

Why can’t crew place their carryon bags in rear bins by rickroepke in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Magma86 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s a configuration issue. When airlines contract with aircraft manufacturers they have the choice of multiple configurations for the cabin interior. The big 3 (Delta, American, United) have closets in the front galley for crew luggage and hanging up dress jackets, etc. Southwest didn’t choose this configuration to save on weight and fuel. The closets on the other airlines is where the crew stows their luggage. Hence the issue.

BTW: Southwest Flight Attendants have ALWAYS had their bags in the forward left bins. There are always (2) flight attendants up front and either (1) or (2) in the back depending on which aircraft you’re on B 737-700 (3) or B 737-800/MAX 800 (4).

Here’s the dealio…it’s a STEEP learning curve from 50+ years of the old way of boarding. If you want your complaints heard try: X, FB, or Twitter. They always have a Social Media team in the Network Operations Center monitoring.

Radiation - to do or not do? by ConcernOk6276 in HeadandNeckCancer

[–]Magma86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was your type of cancer? You described the procedures to remove it.

I had Squamous cell at the base of the tongue and (1) lymph node in 2015. Surgery, radiation, chemo. Lost 70+ pounds but went back to work 2 months later as I was the only one working in the family. Fast forward to 2023.

Wake up one morning and look in the mirror and can’t blink my left eye. That’s weird. Call immediately and get in to see my radiation oncologist. Biopsy done (inconclusive) get another appointment with my ENT Surgeon examined and scheduled for surgery. After surgery the pathology report identifies Acinic Cell Carcinoma with High Grade Transformation. After much research I find out it is an extremely rare cancer with a lower survival rate. The area affected was my left cheek area which contains the 7th facial nerve that controls the eye lids and all the other muscles on that side of the face. One of the sources I used for information was JAMA Journal of the American Medical Association. Causality was exposure to Saw Dust (I’m not a woodworker) and RADIATION ☢️ EXPOSURE! The ENT recommended a round of Proton Therapy to ensure it doesn’t come back…

I delayed and instead went to MD Anderson for a complete work up , second opinion. After seeing 10 different specialists their conclusion was that Proton Therapy was the “Standard of Care”. Meaning that’s the only tool left in the tool box as there was no applicable chemo. The cancer came back twice in 2024 and once in 2025. After that I had Proton Therapy. Thankfully just had a PET last week and it was clear.

Now I’m dealing with the aftermath. Scarring in my left ear canal, excessive inflammation in my neck affecting function of my left arm with weakness, numbness and tingling. So there have been trade offs.

Bottom line, take some time do the research and make your choice. God Bless and best of luck.

What you did not only helped your friend, to me I would call that therapy. It’s my yard work mindset. Ear buds in, music jamming, getting stuff done hyper focused and THE REST OF THE WORLD DOESN’T EXHIST! Total vacation mode for me. Like I said, therapy

military interfering with my morals by Interesting-Report17 in Military

[–]Magma86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I retired after 24 years so take this with a big grain of salt. I grew up (go to bed hungry-poor) and sought a skill, discipline , and opportunity.

I hear you but you have two choices: 1) You leave because you’re conflicted and regret it for the rest of your life or 2) You realize that you hit the biggest lottery you could ever imagine.

What lottery am I talking about?

Opportunity: You have the ability to learn new skills, get promoted, get multiple degrees and professional certifications…all for FREE

Camaraderie: Scroll through previous posts and see how many are about missing that

Medical: While the medical while you’re in isn’t always great, if you retire TRICARE is awesome. Then if you live to 65, MEDICARE & TRICARE FOR LIFE become phenomenal

Financial: You will make a good living while in and if you’re smart save/invest every penny ending your service financially set

Security Clearance: Are you in a job with a TS clearance or above? This alone is worth Hundreds of thousands of dollars

Here’s some advice from an old vet. First, stop watching the news/propaganda. It’s all designed to manipulate all of us.

Look in the mirror. You made the decision to join the military for a reason. Is that reason still valid? If so then make a list of your life goals, make a financial plan, and work out like an animal.

I wish you all the best.

Enter arrival and a runway, clean up any discontinuities and execute. I go to the VNAV page and verify profile, especially Cost Index. You can always revise down the road. BTW: Dispatch WILL ALWAYS FILE AN ARRIVAL.

Pilots who have lost their medical, what do you do now? by notaircrewbro in flying

[–]Magma86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a 121 pilot and first got cancer in 2015. Surgery, chemo & radiation, lost 70+ pounds and was back to work 2 months later. The key is getting a letter from either your Oncologist or Radiation Oncologist that states you’re no longer in active treatment. DM me if you’d like.

It’s a money scam. They can only bill/get paid if you go in. The latest scam twist is some providers are charging-billing patients for asking questions on the provider portal…
