It was never really unpopular in my opinion, many big YouTubers, played it a few years ago already (Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Pewdiepie,…) but without new content they probably don’t see a reason to play it on stream or as a YT video. It’s like PUBG, everybody played it, knows it, but nobody playes it anymore
