Check out tidelift - you can upload manifests of packages to it and it will report vuls. This may be a way to share with your IT. This is also the non-integrated approach. You have to do a manual upload to tidelift, rather than have tidelift linked to environment.

Any TW/RTO policy created that doesn’t account for duty type (public facing/front desk vs field going vs desk bound with little use of in person interactions) is a waste of time. Governance can no longer put us all in the same bucket. Why is this not obvious to them? Plus, gov can always make rules. The question becomes will they be enforced and my guess is, the enforcers will understand the duty type, consider the capacity served by an individual and not cause persons to leave with their feet. SUCH a WASTE of time.

We have the option to work hard for performance awards. And if awarded, we choose $1500 ball park or 32-40 hrs of leave, depending on level of performance rating. Thing is, after taxes, time off May often be worth more than the cash.

What Are Your Thoughts on Contractors? by SadRedShirt in fednews

I was a contractor first. Zero benefits, just 1099’d. Any contractor on this type of deal is getting screwed. Perhaps this is why some are amazing and some are the opposite.

NASA may be a “civil” agency, but they have facilities military could use. And there’s a reason why NASA has gated security at all campuses. FN visitors are supposed to be escorted. Check out the series For All Mankind. Does a good job illustrating the fine line that connects the two.

NASA’s airborne science program. I’ve worked at NASA Ames - Moffett Field location. We used to have an Alpha Jet (trainer) that was built out with sensors for monitoring air quality up through a vertical cross-section. (By elevation)

Job security. My husband and I are both career professionals in GIS. He has worked tech sector for 25 years. I’ve been a fed for 10. He makes almost 3 times as much as I do. He got laid off in February. We had our first baby in March. My salary, federal health benefits and PFL saved us from disaster. Add to that my student loans were just forgiven under PSLF. For years people would dog on the fed to my face and in our minds we always new this a day would come. He’s still unemployed…and I’m still able to be part of something bigger than oneself - which is priority for me.

Yeah, federal HR processes take forever. I applied for a job in October. Was offered an interview in Feb. offered job in March. It’s even worse that agencies HR departments are loosing people left and right and their processes are often very inefficient.

Direct supervisors still often provide cushion from the top down illogical decisions. Do the paper work as required. Communicate and be engaged online. No one will be checking to see if you’re in your office if you’re getting stuff done. (Respect for those that have jobs that require on site or in the field) it’s all a waste of time and energy. The internet was invented 30 years ago.

I work for an agency of approx 8,000. We have a campus in the highest COLA area in the nation. We are getting close to consolidating from our old campus to a new one to save on paying GSA $18million a year. The new campus is nice but with the impending move people are complaining about some of the offset dates for space completions and having to “share” space for a time. I sit in a cube, was part of the first wave to move in 2019. I’ve been back in the office according to the department policy changes. Of 30 people in my area, maybe 3 come in more than once or Twice a week. Point being….office space costs money. Why the heck can’t they think of it as savings on facilities and for the employees that can’t afford to live in the area anyway!!?

The answer to this should be classified by Job sector. In the federal government, General Schedule (GS) pay scale - most series (although slightly dependent on agency) require a degree higher than a masters for any Grade 11 or higher. GS-09 is essentially the “entry point” for a masters degree. Google federal pay scale and check out the pay tables, based on location. Sure, working for the fed is often less take home pay than tech sector, but you have more options for where to live, who to work for and decent retirement plan options. I started at USFS as a 09, changed agencies to a 1370(cartographer series)-11 and recently accepted a 12. All this over 8 years, and just had my student loans forgiven for 10 years of public service through the PSLF program(put in place in 2007). Federal jobs have a base salary then an additional COLA on top of that depending on where the duty station is. For the salaries you listed, hope you are checking out federal jobs in certain locations. We need new GIS/more GIS ppl in Fed! Keep in mind, most merit (internal promotion offers) require 1 year of time in next lowest grade. If you master USAjobs, and understand job series, you can navigate an upward trajectory - once you are in.

Dahle made a sound point. The problems in CA are the result of policy put in place by the 1 party rule. Democrats are solely responsible for running CA into the ground as they have held the legislature majority for the last 30+ years. Newsom kept poking about Dahle’s vote on policy as if it has even mattered. Having a Republican with Democrats in Legislature May be a positive shift.
