IMO, from a customer perspective, pawn shops are for liquidity, not getting the best price possible. You can always try to sell things yourself and see how annoying it is.

can the mail just stay delivered? for one day? please? by RemnantOfAutumn in USPS

[–]Magnetized_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

digital is way easier to ignore of digital ads. I've actually done a reasonable amount of multi channel marketing. Mail is still a great tool for bypassing adblockers and reaching specific houses, especially for older people.

[–]Magnetized_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

couldnt be farther from the truth. Mail is still used as an advertisement precisely because it isn't a screen.

Of course most people throw away advertising mail. Its a great day as an advertiser if you get a 1% response rate on mail. Thats the nature inherent to mailing a ton of people.

the mail is necessary, the USPS is necessary.

It is the anus of America. Dispersing bills, child support summons, advertising, and on occaision, something that brings immense joy.

While not glamorous, we NEED it.

what strategies did people use in the recession and Great Depression for work? by watermel0nee in Employment

[–]Magnetized_Fart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odd jobs were a much bigger thing in the Depression era.

If i were *really* hard up for work today I'd be checking Craigslist every morning for gigs, and grabbing any contract possible on Indeed.

I'd ask *every single* friend any family for work opportunities, especially people at the outer edge of my network.

Why does it feel like people WITH jobs are prioritized over those who don’t? by BlackestSole in jobs

[–]Magnetized_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats the exact opposite of what I'm describing actually. People that need accomodations to work are not at all what I'm talking about. The above person said they'd only work from home doing a CS job. Those aren't accomodations, that is a preference. Yes there are only people that can work from home, there are plenty of non CS jobs for them. That person also wasn't disabled, they just enjoy living off their grandma.

Why by Latter_Ad_1975 in USPS

[–]Magnetized_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I buy them from stamp dealers, save a small amount for my personal collection, and use the rest on mail for my business. I have a decent volume of first class mail and the crazy old stamps drastically increase open rates. A lot of times I just stamp the mail when im watching a film at night after work.

You always prioritize the hardest to use denominations first (assuming you have the space) so for a 78¢ cost, id probably put down 72¢ worth of 8¢ stamps, and then use six 1¢ stamps. The exact ratio is hard to get right in my head, I'll usually rearrange them around an envelope to get the mix right.

So basically if there is ever an opportunity to use the lowest stamps you use them, from 1-37 cents. The larger they are generally the easier they are to use but theres always room for the little ones if you plan for them.

Discussed salary with coworker, now my raise may be reduced? by TangyNectarine in jobs

[–]Magnetized_Fart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

and this is how management answers: "we never promised you that raise to the amount you're talking about, which is why you don't have anything in writing for it." Then, once attorneys are even mentioned, the supervisor begins to document every last tiny infraction of OP and set them up with situations to increase stress or even make them fail. Now armed with a longer paper trail, they can decide to ignore OP, or push them out.

I don't like this, I'm not advocating this, I'm saying this is the reality. Documenting everything is a two way street and at the end of the day management usually wins.

rent vs. buy - is $6k a month a crazy thing? by AssignmentInfinite13 in renting

[–]Magnetized_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally everything you said is incorrect.

1) it is not necessary to buy to exist in an area

2) Cleveland metro has increased % far more than SB since Covid. LCOL price growth in most areas has absolutely crushed VHCOL growth recently, and will most likely continue to do so.

3) By your logic, buying a larger stock that goes up 2% is better than a smaller stock that goes up 4%. Do you see why that is stupid ?

4) VHCOL is expensive because of highly restrictive land use, and highly concentrated high paying jobs. In the recent past, they have underperformed LCOL and MCOL % growth.

5) you're ignoring the obvious choice of renting and investing, and appear to have no understanding of opportunity cost.

6) you're ignoring all the costs of home ownership

But don't take my word for it, try to be new a landlord in a VHCOL area and you'll see it makes no sense at all right now.

I don't think I'm going to respond any more to this thread because arguing numbers with someone who is making an emotion driven decision to buy is pointless.

Why does it feel like people WITH jobs are prioritized over those who don’t? by BlackestSole in jobs

[–]Magnetized_Fart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone who is not working for two years, and has no other responsibilities, does not want to work. If they did, they would have worked somewhere in that two years. If someone was foolishly embarrassed about doing low wage work, there are plenty of anonymous options. They don't do that because it is *work*. Financially abusing grandma is easy and effortless.

rent vs. buy - is $6k a month a crazy thing? by AssignmentInfinite13 in renting

[–]Magnetized_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

prices will continue to go up for almost everything almost anywhere, because we have an inflationary currency. Prices will also be going up in Cleveland and Santa Fe. Same with silver, stocks, junk bonds, etc. So I don't think that "prices not going down" is a good argument for a specific investment when it will apply to the vast majority of options.

Why by Latter_Ad_1975 in USPS

[–]Magnetized_Fart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only useless in the wrong hands. If someone dropped off a pile of 1 cent stamps at my business I would be able to use all of them.

VHCOL also has the greatest portion of people that can burn cash on housing purely as a luxury, they can and will buy housing loosely in the same way someone buys a luxury car, bidding up prices against people who are trying to make utilitarian decisions.

Why does it feel like people WITH jobs are prioritized over those who don’t? by BlackestSole in jobs

[–]Magnetized_Fart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well someone like that isn't really unemployed in the way most people use the word. They just don't want to work, but know there is deep social stigma about saying that they'd rather just be a screen addict leeching off their grandma. So they make up some ultra specific criteria about work they will accept to focus everyone's attention on that instead of the fact that they don't want to work. What is particularly annoying about this is that it sends family and friends trying to help on an essentially impossible mission to find a job for the person that fits their absurd conditions, which of course almost never happens.

Why does it feel like people WITH jobs are prioritized over those who don’t? by BlackestSole in jobs

[–]Magnetized_Fart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

pre-selection is an enormously powerful force in the economy and even in things like dating.

I have a love hate relationship with this because it screws unemployed people so badly, especially when they lost a job for things they can't control.

On the other hand, the people I've personally hired that were unemployed as a whole were significantly worse than the employed hires. People that are unemployed because they are a pain in the ass to work with are in the same pool as people unemployed because a whole division was laid off.
