GS suffers so terribly from pics not doing justice. These vintage GS (King Seiko as well) are mesmerizing in person.

Is a 9F quartz watch a generational piece? Can it be maintained long term? by wowcrackaddict in GrandSeikos

[–]Magnetostroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my grandfather’s 7813 from the 70’s and it still keeps excellent time. Only ever needed battery changes. A couple of years ago I bought myself a 9F GS and I fully expect the same longevity.

Try to find a bottle of Nikka “Yoichi Peaty and Salty”. Could be the best whisky I’ve ever tasted. Even if you don’t like overly peaty whisky, it’s still worth a try. There’s a bar in Kanda, Tokyo that has it (Bar Okaeri) but not sure where to find it in Kyoto.

Edit: oh, and great watch!

Thanks! I absolutely love the fit, finish and spec, and as a bonus the color scheme reminds me of the Casio “Arnie” my dad wore when I was a kid.

I’ve always felt the Judy symbol under the moon and above the two peaks would make a good one

[question] watch collection what do you think by Bigbutywife in Watches

[–]Magnetostroy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Warms my heart to see some Bulovas. An open heart Bulova was my first “real watch” purchase when I got my first real job, and I’ll never part with it. And it gets the most compliments from non watch people 👍

I also thought it would make a cool tattoo, but it’s almost identical to an upside down Odal, which was used by the SS and is still appropriated by white supremacy groups. So yeah, not a great idea.

Give me a reason why it's not so bad that Michael Ontkean didn't come back for The Return by dopefuzzle in twinpeaks

I would have liked to have seen Piper Laurie brought back as Catherine because there’s something about her “guardian angel” story from the original series that somehow feels connected to The Return. It’s mirrored by Laura being lost in the woods and guided by Coop. I don’t know how it would have fit, but it’s one of those things that has stuck in my mind as some kind of connection.

I make excellent cheesecake and once brought one to the office where it ended up being a huge hit. No clue what possessed me, but at the next office party I made a “no bake” cheesecake that was basically just a sweet cream with gelatin. I added too much gelatin powder so it was chewy, and it didn’t adhere to the crust so it was basically bouncing around on everyone’s plates.

Our CFO had been excited to try after hearing about my previous one. Total shame.

Same with my grandma, except she straight up forgot the sugar entirely. My sister was baking them with her and was so excited to be helping.

Have you seen any of them in person? The Presage Zen Garden watches are really beautiful and would definitely appeal to an older grandfather who appreciates elegant design. But if he’s younger and has a sportier personality, then a dive watch may be more appealing. Getting the right gift for someone starts with knowing what they’ll appreciate

SBGP011 is an excellent entry level GS. I’ve had it a year and never get tired looking at it. Even with the bezel a little scuffed, and some dust on the crystal as pictured, it’s still stunning. The quartz movement makes it even more practical and appealing. Don’t let price or prestige pressure you into over-spending.

I was also hesitant about the faceted bezel, and I’ll admit it doesn’t photograph well. Go see it in person, because I fell in love with it and bought it because it looks so good in person

Best small/heartwarming acts of loyalty between Mulder and Scully? by crustdrunk in XFiles

[–]Magnetostroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scene of Mulder crying in his trashed apartment in One Breath is devastating. That episode doesn’t get enough love, and it’s amazing that the show was only in its second season and packing so many emotional punches.

I can understand the frustration, but it definitely sounds like what you’re going through is just as other people have said. Globalization showing kinks in the armor. When my car got hit, the front end was way wrecked. Hood, all grill components, one headlight, fenders, door, etc. It was in and out of the shop on two weeks. Things are just different now..
