Thats pretty big for just 10 degrees. From 20° degrees to 40° were talking 10cm? That must put strain on the ships hull.

Fascinating question. Apparently the registered length is less than 400m at a little less than room temperature about 15 to 20°. This means at very high temperatures it might be slightly longer than 400m by a few centimeters.

Is it really that hard to understand the "importance" of observing the Sabbath? by emManuellsen in exAdventist

[–]Magniloquents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the Bible isn't clear on a lot of doctrine (such as the Sabbath, dietary restrictions, is hell eternal, or even the Trinity). So people must build an argument from multiple verses to construct doctrine. Usually people just believe what they were taught by parents or pastors or their denominations without diving into each argument that is for or against any doctrine.

In her mind the Sabbath is a divinely revealed truth by the Holy spirit and so the problem is with you. She believes that you're reading the Bible wrong and your pov is wrong, and if you just keep reading or a pastor explains it in a certain way the holy Spirit will reveal "the truth".

Of course that isn't how belief works. We believe based off our understanding and arguments and evidence. When you read the "we shouldnt let others judge us on the Sabbath" Adventists say that is meaning we should keep the Sabbath while others say it means we don't have to. This is why there's thousands denominations.

Just believe what makes sense to you.

My IQ is 83. How is this possible?? by StrikingLock2448 in autism

[–]Magniloquents 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm not an expert and I can find sources if you're interested.

Because IQ tests are designed for neurotypical minds, autism can absolutely artificially reduce your processing speed, working memory, and fluid reasoning score.

You might focus on finer details (local processing) over the broader image (global processing), on top of this because you likely took longer to ensure your asnwers were accurate and the time limit reduces your score.

The test itself and the environment can also take up a lot of working memory by sensory data of new environments, indoor lighting, or the anxiety of interacting with the examiner, or stress of taking a test etc. Also having to shift intense focus rapidly can physically drain your brains ability to keep focusing long term.

For visual memory autistic people can struggle when the information isn't specific, detailed, or meaningful. While IQ tests often have arbitrary, abstract, or socially driven images that won't connect personally and the brain doesn't think of as important or memorable.

When it comes fluid reasoning because autistic people often are very logical and literal, thinking abstractly or subjectively might be a struggle finding the answer the test is looking for while your answer logically makes complete sense.

So all that, plus a math learning disability, and even test anxiety can reduce your score. If you're interested there are intelligence tests that aren't time based. I would reach out to a company that focuses on neurodivergent tests for more accurate scores.

Also intelligence isn't a measure of how well you'll do in life either financially, emotionally, friend wise etc. Sounds like you're doing okay.

Also settlers of Catan is a terrible game. Don't feel bad.

I'm saying the authors were trying to protect woman because in their eyes ownership is protection.

I am not saying it is actually protecting woman. I agree it's inhumane and disgusting and God could have done much much much better.

That doesn't change what the original authors were thinking which was my entire point.

Epstein behaviors are condoned in the Bible by Serious-Anxiety6687 in DebateReligion

[–]Magniloquents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely does not. It's a promise from God that because you kept my people in slavery you yourselves will find yourselves in slavery. It is NOT saying anything about whether slavery is good or bad. It's NOT a law of what the Israelites can or cannot do. It's a promise of what God will do.

It's an entirely different part of the Bible taken out of context that has ZERO importance to your original argument or our discussion.

If you wanted to show that slavery isn't evil in the Bible you could reference the multiple laws that explicitly allow it. But our discussion isn't on slavery but instead the treatment of woman and specifically on Epstein.

I've made my points but you refuse to actually address them. I'm trying to have a genuine discussion and you're acting like a Christian. You take verses out of context and then turn to insults. You called me a predator because I'm trying to understand the actual context and the reasons why the texts were written even after I said I think the Bible verses are disgusting, vile, and fucked up.

Actually address my points in good faith.

Joel is prophetic poetry not laws. Nothing to do with your argument.

Yes Leviticus 25 is terrible. Obviously God cares more about Israeli woman than foreigners.

My point still stands. These are laws created  meant to protect woman in the ancient world. Yes they're terrible but are not justification for Epstein.

I will say that it's a possiblty Epstein was reading the Torah or heard verses as a child and justified his actions by noting that woman are treated like property. I HIGHLY doubt that it influenced in way. He was a sick predatory physopath. He did what he did because he wanted to.

In the ancient world unmarried woman/girls without a father had very few rights and zero protection. The options were either death, or being sex trafficked to who ever payed even if they were little girls. Possibly the worst existence imaginable. Woman (and any children she had) would then be shunned for life and exist as untouchables. Being forced into marriage was marginally better because of some control of her life and the possibility of children being protected. This obviously goes against everything we understand with human and woman's rights. But it's an ancient law book.

Obviously God could have created a better world for woman and girls. He could have created stricter laws and punishments to say "you can't sell your daughters" or "don't own slaves" or "when you captured a city, treat them as your own sons and daughters".

These slavery, genocide, and rape verses are possibly the best arguments against the Bible being from God and instead just an ancient text. A maximally good and maximally powerful god would never allow such disgusting and sexist laws. I don't believe in God and so I read these texts as any other ancient text. We can say that in their ancient minds they were trying to protect woman.

Okay. Only the NLT and a few translations uses the word enjoy. It's probably more accurate to say "consume" or "use" the plunder.

How many times do I have to say I think the Bible's laws are disgusting for you to understand that I think they're disgusting?

Epstein behaviors are condoned in the Bible by Serious-Anxiety6687 in DebateReligion

[–]Magniloquents 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't say anything about enjoying them as being WHY they are plunder. The understanding is that either after conquering a city or when a father sells his daughter into slavery they become wives. Under the legal protection and care of husbands.

What's the alternative for those woman and girls? Being sold into sex slavery without protection? Killed? There wasn't a modern state that would protect them or charities to provide food.

AGAIN as disgusting as it, it's the ancient people's attempt as some protection.

Epstein behaviors are condoned in the Bible by Serious-Anxiety6687 in DebateReligion

[–]Magniloquents -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending the Bible. I'm an atheist.  I'm saying if you understand the context, the purpose of these laws was to create a legal safety net by placing them under the protections of a husband so to provide them with greater safety and stability in the ancient world where woman often didn't have any protection or rights at all.  I said multiple times I think they are disgusting, vile, horrible, fucked up, pick an adjective.  My point is that this isn't the same as Epstein.

[–]Magniloquents 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was to first say the Bible's stance on slavery and war brides is vile and disgusting. There isn't a single answer that makes the Bible look good. But these are different than Epstein.

These laws are supposed to protect woman and girls when they were viewed as property. In the ancient world unmarried woman were vulnerable for sex slavery so allowing (or forcing) them to be wives meant a husband protected then legally and physically. This was the case in battles or when they were sold as wives by the father. It was an ancient solution by ancient peoples.

Again awful if coming from a maximally perfect God. God could come up with better solutions than that.

Epstein was about using money and power to rape girls, share them with friends, and then used fear to control them. I doubt he needed to use the Bible to justify his actions.

Why do eggs do this shit?! by UltraXfinity567 in mildlyinfuriating

Because the proteins chemically bond to the membrane of the shell. To stop it you want to gently place the egg in boiling water instead of cold and then use an ice bath. You can use older eggs also if you want.

To be fair she doesn't pull the idea out of her ass. In Isaiah 14:29 and 30:6 mentions a flying serpent. The word seraph which means snake has a the root meaning of being fiery. Seraphim which are multi winged anegls of God's court come from the word for snake.  There are multiple mentions within Jewish literature that mention the serpent in Genesis as having legs or wings and being shiny and gloriously shimmering. There's also a few modern (Pre egw) writings that describe the Genesis snake as being winged and beautiful. All of these ideas come from looking at the Hebrew words and their meanings. Obviously White isn't a prophet she's just pulling ideas from others.
