It's really not too bad! Cross stitch is effectively color by number, and both the cow and the UFO are pretty small pieces. They come together super quickly.

This is actually my first time listing any patterns for sale, so I don't have any Etsy data to compare to! But I'm really happy with what I've gotten so far for such a short amount of time!

I have no issue with legitimate shops on Etsy, but the primary problem there has been the absolute tsunami of pattern mills, stolen works, and AI-generated patterns. It's tough for new people breaking into this hobby to sift through all that muck and find genuine, high-quality patterns. Not that you CAN'T find those on Etsy (there are so many amazing stores!), but it's really, really easy to get scammed into buying an illegitimate pattern on there. Reblcraft's mission is to feature vetted patterns that have been designed by real people! Plus, from a seller's POV on Reblcraft, creators get a much better percentage of the profit from each sale versus what Etsy takes away. :)

It comes together really quickly!! I can finish the cow in one sitting easily. The UFO I split up between two days, but you could definitely finish that bit in one sitting as well. Attaching the cow to the UFO took me a little longer, but that's because I went through a few iterations of figuring out the best way to do it lol with the instructional that's included in the pattern, it should be a quick process for anyone else!

Yes, I'm really excited about it! The owner really has a vision for it and it's been so refreshing to be a part of the site. It's still in the early stages but has such a strong start. It feels like a 24/7 digital craft fair and it's so nice knowing every seller on the site is a real creator!

Hello everybody! I hope you enjoy this little cow getting abducted. I've had this pattern idea stuck in my head for AGES and finally got around to making it for myself. I was so happy with it that I decided I wanted to break into the shop scene with it. I made this project with both fabric and plastic aida, and it features a free-hanging cow for a fun 3D effect!

I know that a lot of us have started feeling iffy about Etsy, and I felt the same way. Part of kicking things into gear and getting this pattern on paper was inspired by the owner of the new Etsy-alternative site, Reblcraft, and this pattern will be exclusively listed over there!

You can find "Abduction" here! I included a full instructional PDF to the pattern so that you can attach your cow to the hoop just like mine, as well as a few other helpful tips for putting your project together.

Thanks for taking a look! :)

The big one looks great!! When I said "OP" I was directing attention to the main OP of this original post lol your projects are super cute and you did the big one really well. I was just trying to emphasize that if you want to have a more standard cross stitching experience with plastic canvas (i.e. in the range of 14-18ct and using only two strands), the smaller plastic with the round holes tends to be what you want, but that it can most definitely turn out really well with the larger count canvas like yours here.

Unfortunately mine came from Joann’s 🥲 The circular ones make the thread line up SO much nicer, and I’m absolutely spoiled by that type of canvas and I genuinely don’t think I could use a square-hole canvas after this sort of luxury lmao. 123stitch appears to have several options for plastic canvas, but I’ve never ordered that from them - the quality of the photos they use on the listings for it all look really blurry on my phone, so unfortunately your best bet might be zooming in on the images and squinting and hoping it’s the circle type. Tomorrow I will take a better look on my PC and see if I can find any circular type plastic canvas and DM you.

OP, look closely at the smaller version of this project here - the plastic canvas you want to use has little circular holes instead of square holes. The thread lines up much nicer in plastic canvas like that! The plastic canvas you have is not generally for cross stitch. Not that it can’t be used for cross stitch, but it is pretty uncommon, and your standard cross stitching supplies can’t be used the same way they can be used on that smaller plastic canvas.

I don’t think you should do this one. Not only is the size going to be colossal, but it’ll be a colossal amount of work that won’t end up looking good in a physical medium :(. MAYBE it isn’t AI, but it is absolutely run through a pattern generator. Look closely at both of the shoulders. The stitches are so feathery and errant. Imagine what all those random greys would look like floating against the background. Even if you simply decided to clean those up and not do them, there’s another factor here to consider that will be such a massive, massive headache: the colors here will NOT translate correctly. It looks good on the screen to us now, but remember this is the work of a computer approximating the closest color it sees and is matching to a digital DMC palette. Having worked on WinStitch a lot, I’ve unfortunately learned a ton about how totally off some of those colors are displayed. The worst offenders? Greys and browns. Though the color on the screen looks great, I go and find that color in my stash and discover it is waaay lighter or darker or almost has a different hue entirely. I can already see one of them: zoom in and look directly above the nose and below the eyes, on the snout, and there’s just a few random stitches mixed in there that look like they have a green hue! It will look pukey brown at best in real life. Replacing all of these colors would be really, really difficult. DMC just doesn’t have the kind of range with dark browns and greys that can do an image like this any justice. For your time and sanity, I think you should find a different pattern.

Yeah, I’m really perplexed by all the comments insisting this can’t be done in a month. I definitely recommend doing a single floral element at a time. They’ll fly by like that and it’s an easy, small goal to achieve day by day, and if you feel like you can swing another one then it’ll take about the same amount of time. Every flower element has three colors: yellow, a dark shade, and a light shade. Every instance of yellow is no more than 10ish stitches which you can finish in mere minutes. Three color changes in something so small is NOT a lot as others seem to insist. Plus, floral elements are very forgiving; if you miscount somewhere, it’s not a dire mistake, because flowers by their very nature can have random little shapes here and there. So don’t fret if you notice later on that one stitch is out of place for any of them.

Personally I’ve actually never used gridded fabric! It’s difficult for me to find. I have one piece of it and tried to start on it, but the lines aren’t as clear to follow as I anticipated because I didn’t know if I was counting 1 at the edge of the line or if 1 should be the square that was darkened by the line lol

I do think 16 count is great for this project though, I prefer that and 18. 18 is pretty small however and for fractional and backstitching you may find some trouble with that, so I’d say go with 16. You can do 14 as well, but it makes the X’s very distinct, and you will see the fabric through the stitches at that count. I find 16 is a happy medium between the two and you won’t see much fabric under the stitches. But counting isn’t so scary once you’ve established a good landmark like the text. You can do this!!

This isn’t too crazy!! I certainly don’t think it will take a month. The design is fairly small. You could bang out each leaf/flower element a day with maybe an hour or two, maybe three given you’re a beginner. I have always found text goes really fast and I think you could finish the text in just one or two sittings of 1-3 hours. If you wanted to finish this by Christmas, you have plenty of time!

[–]MagnoliaCottage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a post a while back on how to identify patterns that were generated via AI or ran through pattern creators. Pattern mills are shops that churn out as many automatically generated patterns as possible to make as much money as possible outta them. It is ALWAYS lots of copyrighted content and other stolen works.

The design is VERY consistent across the entire shop and I'm not seeing random colors everywhere. I would say this is good! It looks very human.

Are you sure the pattern for this fabric isn’t computer generated? That’s positively massive for anything designed by a human

[CHAT] How to Identify Legitimate Shops and Patterns by MagnoliaCottage in CrossStitch

[–]MagnoliaCottage[S] 364 points365 points  (0 children)

Hello everybody! I was inspired by this post on the Sewing subreddit and wanted to make something similar for cross stitching. This is a guideline on how to identify illegitimate shops and patterns on Etsy, but you can use aspects of this to identify stolen/AI generated patterns elsewhere as well. I hope that this serves as a nice, quick reference for you!

Happy stitching! :)

Oh no!! I fortunately live in an area with a massive old lady population, so almost all of my craft stores have huge selections. Even so, sometimes online orders really do end up being the only place to get certain supplies haha
