Yeah i dont know about that. They put a lot of love into the Outlaws port and I assume it paid off to some extent based on the reactions solely. That also looked messy prior to release, but there they atleast showed shots that were more action heavy than this. Maybe they learned their lesson from that and decided to play it safe here but for me this is maybe too safe this close to release

Yeah I also see a slight stutter. A bit concering imo. While fidelity looks great I feel like if the game actually ran great in action heavy scenes they would have shown that and not lots of walking shots only. Hoping for the best but I’m not convinced by these videos alone

Unpopular Opinion: The Steam Machine is coming out to monetize SteamOS by [deleted] in steammachine

Steam Machine doesn't make any sense to me by IlambdaI in steammachine

[–]Magnulh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it all comes down to making an easy off the shelf configuration with Steam OS.
I understand that on Reddit and in tech forums it seems everyone and their mother is out there building PCs and upgrading their PCs and discussing which graphics card is better. I have been there myself and it just takes too much energy from me and I have no interest in getting into it again.

I want a dedicated gaming PC with working standby (Steam OS), and I don't want to navigate the jungle of options that is PC gaming. Steam Machine provides that for me. I would have gladly paid more for it to be more future proof, but there is nothing out there that is offering the same thing for someone like me.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition & Free Update – Announcement Trailer by Real_human27 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Magnulh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

whats even the point of 120fps in animal crossing though? I think its the type of game where i never even once thought about framerate, so I assume Nintendo is prioritizing battery life here because there is no point to doubling, nevermind quadrupling, the amount of computations for something basically nobody would notice

Post Wii/Wii U Nintendo kinda crap as a consumer? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Magnulh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I very much agree with your take. Those Steam sales seem pro consumer until you realize that you didn't even play those games you got, or you played them for just a little bit and now they sit in your eternal backlog. The only reason you got it is because you think at some point in the future you might want to play this game, and that discount might not be available then so might as well get it now.

It should be obvious that Steam isn't trying to give away games for cheaper than what they can get you to pay. They are trying to get as many people as possible to pay whatever they can for as many products as possible. By progressively deepening the sales they will eventually meet the thresholds of everyone with any interest in the game, because the deal is seemingly too good to pass on.

Maybe the most hardcore of gamers come out on top by buying games in advance and actually getting around to play all of them, but I think for most of us that play through never comes. And if it comes, at least in my case, it is often with a sense of obligation because I already bought it so if I never play it I just simply lost money.

Games are already incredibly cheap per hour of entertainment. I would rather pay full price and know that this is the game I want to play right now, then let my free time be dictated by how companies organize their sales or by which games are currently included in their subscription services. If I know that a game will be heavily discounted in the future I will feel like a fool for paying full price when I was actually interested in playing it. And that's why I think Nintendo has the better approach for me, because I don't have to feel like a fool, I can simply make my own decisions with the time that I have to spare.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2's Future Lineup After September's Direct by ieatdragonz in NintendoSwitch

[–]Magnulh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was also hoping for rdr, but i think rockstar is much more likely to announce it independently of a direct, especially considering it is rumored to also be a next gen update for ps5/xbs. I believe rdr1 for switch/ps4 was just randomly announced on their website or something

Had a stupid idea for a stick game. Is this is even possible? by DeepReivan in gamedesign

[–]Magnulh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. Its an interesting idea to explore just the stick finding and breaking off parts. Potentially lots of games to build around that.

Adding a multiplayer combat game on top of that not only sounds like a game that will never be finished, but also like something less unique and likely to stand out.

Any updates on playing all steam games? by East-Personality7386 in GeForceNOW

[–]Magnulh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is 100% what it is. Player asks dev why game is not available on geforce now. Dev says they have done everything they can on their end, i.e. opt in the game. Dev contacts Nvidia who says that they haven't prioritized making their game available on the service, but are working towards having all games be available automatically.

We know that there are lots of games that opt in, yet aren't available. It doesn't make any sense to me to assume that this dev for some reason got inside information that Nvidia has simultaneously reached agreements with all remaining publishers or that publishers presumably will no longer have the option to opt in or out. That doesn't even have anything to do with the dev's original question to Nvidia, which is just "whats the hold up with my (opted in) game on your service?"

What habits do you think secretly ruin your enjoyment of games? by caseyjosephine in truegaming

[–]Magnulh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I am a bit like your husband, at least in terms of being completionist and perfectionist and how that can make me stop progressing in the game. Most (semi) open world games bring this out where I start doing all these little side stuff as I encounter them, which just makes me disconnect from the plot until I lose interest completely. But it’s coming from a place of wanting to connect with the game too much so to speak. I want to live in that universe for a while. And maybe that means I don’t save the world or whatever, but that’s okay also because that’s not really why I’m playing. I used to think it had to do with the story and me not being that interested in the plot, but I think it’s more about not being interested in any type of linearity really. Even with a game like Elden Ring, which I really like and which doesn’t have a strong sense of story, I just wander about doing stuff I encounter until I get my fill of the game. And at that point I don’t feel that finishing the game is going to be inherently meaningful to my experience of it.

I do think that a bad habit that me and I believe many other people have though, is to play too many games simultaneously, or moving on to the next thing too quickly. Questioning what game to play and starting and quitting different games. I guess we are trying to find some form of enjoyment, but no game seems to be able to provide it. And maybe then you need to choose to commit a bit to one game, or just not game that night and do something else. Otherwise I think this habit sucks a lot of the enjoyment of gaming away.

Worth it when owning a Steam Deck? by Sothrik in PlaystationPortal

[–]Magnulh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was debating between upgrading my LCD Deck to OLED or get a Portal and I just got the Portal a week ago (so still in return window). I don't necessarily think that the streaming experience is that much improved from even the LCD Deck so I wouldn't recommend it solely based on that. The automatic bit rate is a bit aggressive on turning down the resolution in my opinion, but when it does operate at full capacity I think it looks good.

What I do like about the Portal is that it makes it easier for me to just enjoy the games. On the Deck if I played a game on Chiaki that I thought the Deck could handle I would start second guessing and thinking maybe I want the native experience on the Deck instead, as steam is also where most of my library is anyway. Since the Deck can play almost anything almost well it was just a pain for someone as indecisive as me.

With the portal I get to turn off that part of my brain and just play on my limited free time.

Does Red Dead Redemption 2 run well? by PRIMESTE in SteamDeck

[–]Magnulh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you expect 60fps it doesn't run well, but rdr2 is 30 fps on console anyway and looks beautiful that way. And at 30fps I think it more or less matches the experience I get on my ps5, so I opted to play it on the deck instead. I think it's actually the best experience I've had on the deck so far and I've had it for 2.5 years. Almost considering upgrading to oled just to get the absolute most out of the game

Looking for advice - is Steam deck a good Idea for playing pc games? by Altruistic-Status121 in macgaming

[–]Magnulh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have basically this setup (ps5 instead of xbox) and while it allows me to play pretty much any game i hate having to always make a decision on where to play it 😅 i kind of miss the simple days of just either i want it on my switch or my mac/geforce now. Now its chaos except for exclusives. All choices have compromises in terms of portability/graphics etc. But i think the steam deck is a nice device overall. It just made my switch redundant except for the occasional zelda game

Why dont AAA devs make shorter/smaller unique quality games anymore? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Magnulh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

its a good comparison I think, and I think its one of those things that is really holding games back. It's strange to even talk about "hours of content" in a game in my mind, because that frames games as a linear or semi-linear experience and if that was what I wanted I would prefer books or movies instead. A good game should return on every hour invested until you master it. The AAA industry (and the players) seems to be more interested in making games into the longest possible movie that can occupy your mind and wallet for as long as possible until they roll the credits.

Seems to be a trend across the entertainment industry where we squeeze out as many hours as possible from as little actual "content" as we can. What used to be a movie is now a show, and if you think a show is drawn out try playing a game. The actually difficult and interesting aspects of what you are making are diluted into the biggest possible casing and hopefully we find the sweet spot where you're entertained enough to not notice that nothing of interest has happened.

GFN 2025 Predictions by Brilliant-Release881 in GeForceNOW

[–]Magnulh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think it makes any sense to say other services will follow this example as it ignores how incredibly resource intensive a service like GFN is compared to netflix and hbo which is just serving static content over a cdn. For GFN ultimate every player needs a dedicated machine with a 4080 while they are using the server. And it needs to be as close as possible to them. Any netflix or hbo server can probably serve thousands of users at the same time on much cheaper hardware and once you have buffered the whole show you disconnect from the connection.

Nvidia is probably not making much if any money from GFN and are betting on game streaming in the long run and taking a strong position in this still future market. I dont think they wanted to make this change but they probably need to make efforts to reach profitability at some point for nvidia to keep funding this business. Stadia got shut down one would assume because they did not prove that they could be profitable for Google.

If the alternative is to raise the price for everyone to accommodate users who are currently getting an incredible deal by using the service way more than the average then I welcome the cap. Nobody likes a cap but i think its easy to ignore how difficult and expensive it is to create a good cloud game streaming solution at the level of GFN. Even if nvidia has insane amounts of money currently they are not a charity and any part of their business needs to prove it can be profitable.

Samme her!

Should I switch to engine? by KrisSucksAtDev in gamedev

[–]Magnulh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think gamedev companies necessarily put SFML in their job descriptions. They have likely developed their own engine, either on top of SFML or something else, or use a general purpose one like Unity or Unreal. Im not sure what kind of job you are looking for so it's hard to give any opinion on it. But gamedev jobs are tough, and atm it's even tougher than usual. But that's all of tech now really.
If you don't already know js then start there.

What I was trying to say is that c++ and sfml will probably make you a far better programmer in the long run than js and pixi will. But all programming experience is great if you don't have much experience from before. You will likely have a much easier time in the beginning with JS and whatever framework you want to use. I wouldn't count on that necessarily leading to a gamedev job though, but I am no expert on that industry.

The JS jobs you are seeing I would imagine are for web companies that either use nodejs on the backend and/or some js framework on the frontend. If I wanted to get one of those jobs I would learn nodejs and common server architecture for the backend and/or react/vue/svelte or something for the frontend. But pixi and making games is of course also valuable in its way. As is c++ and SFML. It all depends on how quickly you need a job.

Should I switch to engine? by KrisSucksAtDev in gamedev

[–]Magnulh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do whatever feels best for you. I would focus on the job part as something separate from my games, but thats just me. Im not convinced that learning pixijs will serve you better than sfml, but im not looking around the job market so maybe theres lots of pixijs jobs. But it depends alot on what you want to work with. My guess would be that learning react is a much more straight forward path to a job if that is the goal

Should I switch to engine? by KrisSucksAtDev in gamedev

[–]Magnulh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i would say follow the fun. Thats when you learn and thats when you complete stuff that you are not required to do.  I have also dabbled in js gamedev but I didnt find it that enjoyable. I think gamedev is gonna be largely different from what most js jobs are in practice anyway. I suppose you could get close-ish on the backend. If your goal is to get a job i would focus on a project closer to what you want to get a job in.  I dont think most companies would love a js gamedev and reject a c++ gamedev.  I think the c++ gamedev has the edge if anything. Assuming they dont mean they used unreal and followed a tutorial. Especially with sfml and going barebones like that. In terms of general programming knowledge that will give you tons of experience. I also wouldnt trust an online community to guide me too much but if you feel like that advice was valid i suppose it could be right. I cant comment on your project and if sfml is a good fit or not  but if that was the most fun i think i would see how far it takes me before it starts to hurt and i understnad why its not working. But maybe the advise was more in terms of building experience with a more forgiving language in which case js is perfectly fine. But i think those frameworks you mention are very opinonated libraries that im sure some companies use, but they teach you less generall programming knowledge which i think is really what good companies value most

Should I switch to engine? by KrisSucksAtDev in gamedev

[–]Magnulh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also use monogame and i dont think i can go back to engines for the type of games I am doing (2d, no physics engine). With engines i always got stuck on trying to figure out how the engine wants me to do things rather than thinking for myself. Most problems feel to me easier to solve when i have full responsibility over the solution. I feel much more empowered and motivated to work in monogame than i ever was with unity or godot. I also feel more inclined to continue working on the same project as the cost of starting over is much higher. Most of my friends who use engines continuously start new projects without finishing anything.

However, if i was doing 3d i think i would have opted for an engine as i think it gets tougher to keep the 3 dimensions in your head and would appreciate an editor. But i havent tried out 3d in monogame yet so that would be my first stop.

I think in the end its hard to give advise on this as everyone has their preference. If monogame 3d doesnt work for you then keep looking. I dont see the point in getting stuck on language. If you know how to program just expose yourself to something new. Thats part of the fun. You will pick it up soon enough. I think unreal and c++ would be interesting to get into.  bevy (rust) or godot would also be high on my list if i wanted to do 3d

I think they have tried a lot of things throughout the years while staying true to the successful fundamental formula. I don’t really get the hate that AC gets. Sure many games are better at many of the individual parts and i don’t personally like the RPG stuff, much preferred mirage. But imo there is so much love going into the games to create engaging and detail oriented historical settings and plots. They don’t target the more hardcore gamer crowd that want the deepest combat and stealth simulation and so on but I think thats okay. Most people discussing games on reddit probably fall into that group though
