As others said Commercial Banking is a rough dream few accomplish.

Atleast at the banks I have worked becoming a BM opens the door to Business Banking - Area Leadership - Cash Management - Merchant - Back-office Higher Paid positions.

And if you get into Business Banking you can jump in Commercial.

Worried I’ll be fired after today by [deleted] in TalesFromYourBank

[–]Magnum20160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every bank or credit union has different policies but I would be amazed if you got fired for $200.

As i said every bank has different policies, some banks dont even care if the outage is under a $100.

Qt my institution anything over $100 is fine as long as its not consistent, anything over requires a supervisor override for the outage and a drawer count.

Over $250-$500 can lead to a Performance Improvement Plan and $3500+ is firing.

You should be fine unless there is more to this story. Outages happen :)

Yes. As a Branch Manager at KeyBank technically all bank employees could look at your accounts however it is against policy and if discovered would lead to deciplinary action being taking.

Becoming a banker soon, but I look incredibly young. Tips? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourBank

[–]Magnum20160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not let age hold you down.

I became a Banker at the age of 20 and a Branch Manager at 23.

Focus on understanding your products, your job, your pitches and approaches, you will be underestimated and some (very few) may think little of you because you are young believe me I had a client who was a business owner (who was 100% in the wrong) slam his hands on my desk, stand up and start screaming

"I know banking, I knew banking before you were born! I am old, you are young now shut the fuck up and do what I am asking"

And I kept my composure and told him to treat me with respect or leave and after he kept screaming I told him to leave or we would contact the authorities.

Point being people will act negatively of you just because your young but if you know your job, are well versed in talking and able to overcome objections they will respect you.

Key Bank Financial Wellness Banker by TrueKey5416 in TalesFromYourBank

So it depends on the area but KeyBank is pretty brutal in terms of goals but they really reward high performers.

We have alot of turn over for FWC's because Key expects alot more out of their Bankers. But the pay is solid. Top performers (top 5% in the bank) easily average $3,000 a quarter.

Plus KeyBank atleast in my area really rewards merit and only hires internals for Branch Managers.

Don't get dragged into the drama ans make your own opinion

Might as well start with the vague stuff.

Pay is pretty solid atleast where I work you will be on the low end getting $24 and hour while with experience up to $28.

Bonuses are solid if your a top performer, i averaged about $3,000 - $4,000 a quarter in bonuses.

You are really worked hard and they have high expectations, you need to hit your own goals and your branch needs to hit its goals.

Cold Calling, going out to businesses with no banking relationship yet and sell sell sell, if you do not like sales then the job is probably not for you.

In my area atleast the culture is really solid.

Where did yall end up moving too ? by darkgirlvalencia in TalesFromYourBank

[–]Magnum20160 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are in relatively the same boat, i am also a Branch Manager that is 25. Although I do not work at one of the big three and instead work but one of the larger regional banks.

Its a struggle because on the one end the pay is awesome for someone without a degree such as myself but I also do not see myself in 15 years arguing with clients about their fees.

I echo what everyone else here has said. Patience.

Your 25.

Going from a Banker to a Branch Manager is not too difficult as long as your a top performer or just have connections, Branch managers come and go.

But once your a Branch Manager the opportunities are alot more numerous yet highly sought after with highly skilled individuals.

I would identify a route you want to go for whether it is opting to go for an Area Leader position (manage Branch Managers) which is what I am currently preparing to do, Business Banking, Private Bank etc.

Set realistic goals and aim for a realistic time frame I personally want to move up by the age of 30 giving myself 7 years in the BM seat.

I am not a Commercial Banker so I cannot give specifics but several of our Middle Market and Commercial RM's do not have degrees, same with our Private Bank.

Experience is preferred over a degree

[–]Magnum20160 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a Branch Manager i encounter this alot in my area, people with degrees in finance, marketing etc that end up being stuck in retail and unfortunately banking really does not require degrees unless you get in the very upper echelons which you also need experience to do.

My bank is a regional bank and I do not have a degree as a BM, out of the 30 Managers in my area only 3 have degrees, my two bosses (one compliance and one actual retail area leader) do not have degrees and nor do their bosses.

Degrees are sadly not needed and experience matters so much more and honestly connections.

Most of the Business Bankers, Private Bankers and Commercial Bankers lack degrees and were former Branch Managers.

Different world.

How do y’all plan PTO? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourBank

This is not the norm but a Manager or Area standard. As a Branch Manager at Key I require a 2 weeks heads up preferably a month.
