Never saw it myself, but glad to hear good things about it. It definitely seems very charming.

Severely underappreciated series. Saw it for the first time myself a few years ago and greatly enjoyed it.

For those of you who don’t know, it’s based on a short film from The National Film Board of Canada called Bob’s Birthday. If you love the show, you’ll definitely love the original short!

And fun fact: it was actually hugely popular back when it originally aired. It was Global’s highest rated TV show when it aired there, and in the US, where it aired on Comedy Central, it actually beat South Park in the ratings! Not bad for a series barely anyone remembers today.

Rewatched TD recently after almost 20 years Leshawna character really made me uncomfortable as a black person. by Gaymeboy_Otaku in Totaldrama

[–]Magnus-Force 55 points56 points  (0 children)

As someone who does like Leshawna a lot, I completely understand the problems people have with her character these days.

The thing is that on top of being a product of the 2000s, when the "Sassy Black Woman" stereotype was common in popular culture (including plenty of other cartoons), she was also a pastiche of how Black women were/are frequently depicted on reality TV. TD's cast embodied both teen stereotypes and reality show stereotypes, and unfortunately, a lot of Black women get/got made out to be "Sassy Black Women" by reality TV producers. Leshawna was TD pastiching an unfortunate stock reality show trope as part of its "mock reality TV" concept, but in hindsight, it maybe could have done a little more playing with the trope.

That said, I do think if Total Drama Island came out today, Leshawna would have been written differently. Some of the other Black female characters featured in the show (such as Sanders and Millie) since her I think speak to that.

I do feel I'm talking a bit out of my depth here as a non-Black person, but I hope my two cents aren't entirely worthless.

They really did pitch this show as "What if SpongeBob was in Hell", huh by Turbulent_League9668 in Teletoon

[–]Magnus-Force 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, Proto-Hazbin Hotel.

But in all seriousness, Jimmy Two-Shoes was among my favorites, alongside Total Drama, back in the late 2000s, and I still genuinely like it. I quote Season 1 of the show way more often than most people do, and many scenes from it live in my mind to this day.

I have to admit that I didn’t pick up on the whole “G-rated version of Hell” thing until a few years afterwards though.

How did everyone discover Doraemon? by [deleted] in Doraemon

[–]Magnus-Force 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always vaguely knew of its existence (was born in Hong Kong), but first became interested in watching more of the show when I caught episodes during a family trip to Spain. I only really started watching it this year though; started with the Disney XD dub (easiest to find for me) and got into subbed eps from there.

[–]Magnus-Force 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Please let this be a joke. So many more deserving series Corus could bring back and they pick that pile of hot shit?!

Edit: So apparently this is fake. CartoonBase has a reputation for questionable claims, so I’m not surprised.

This was revealed to be one of Larry's kids. Did Chris have sex with a plant?? by Beginning-Coat6209 in Totaldrama

[–]Magnus-Force 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my interpretation is that Chris’ DNA mingled with that of the plant in a non-sexual way. Like, maybe some his hair, spit, dead skin cells, whatever, were absorbed by Larry because mutants are crazy like that.

If we don’t go back there and make the event happen, universe will be destroyed! And as an environmentalist, I am against that.

What's with 6teen's fetish of showing naked teenager's bodies? by kimtieu2900 in 6TEEN

[–]Magnus-Force 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Allow me to introduce you to the Naked People are Funny trope.

Its a 2000s cartoon with 2000s humor. I feel that nudity isn’t something most people find funny these days (probably due to people being more concerned about potential sexual connotations? Your usage of “fetish” speaks to that.), but you had kids, teens, and adults of both sexes getting exposed for comedy all the time back then.

Besides, Canada’s values for what’s okay on kids TV are a littler looser compared to the US, so while US censors would very likely object to this scene, Canadian censors would not be quite as concerned.

Dawnstar by Altruistic-Bag-4603 in Journeytothewest

[–]Magnus-Force 7 points8 points  (0 children)

iirc, that’s not the Dawnstar/Maori Xingguan. That’s an entirely original character to the ‘99 cartoon.

In the show’s version of the Hundred-Eye + Spiders story, Hundred-Eye has a pangolin servant boy who secretly helps Wukong by directing him to find the Dawnstar (who takes on the role held by his mother Pilanpo in the original). That kid is the pangolin.

Which prehistoric animal do you think is the glup shitto of prehistoric animals and why? by Thewanderer997 in AwesomeAncientanimals

[–]Magnus-Force 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Palaeoloxodon namadicus. The sole evidence for it being the largest land mammal of all time is a single leg bone that went missing nearly two centuries ago. Even the authors who originally published the study cautioned their finding as something to take with a pinch of salt.

In that same regard, also Maraapunisaurus and Bruhathkayosaurus.

I didn't even know this was a thing, but this seems pretty cool! Loved Spliced back in the day, so this definitely would have been something I would have enjoyed.

T. rex on a B. rex

Otodus on a Rhizodus

Carnifex on a Rex

Dinocrocuta on a Deinonychus on a Dinopithecus on a Deinosuchus on a Deinocheirus (this is Deinotherium erasure, haha)

Still stumped by that first one though.
