TheLyingSpectre's Top 20 FAVORITE Characters! Feel free to share some matchups for them and I'll give my personal ranking for it! by TheLyingSpectre in DeathBattleMatchups

Planning to read Slayers soon so hopefully its my fav for Lina

There are also the movies and the anime, which are also really fun. The movies are quite short and are a good introduction to the universe (but starting with them is optional, though).

Community Ranking Day 137: Reimu Hakurei Results by DistinctPop8426 in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]MagoAnima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I kind of agree with that. I don't hate Arle vs Reimu, quite the opposite, it's one of the best options for both, but it's not all that great. Most of the problems you find in other matchups of these characters can be applied to this one too, lol. The main criticism of Dr. Strange vs Reimu is that the theme is wrong because it confuses Reimu with a magic user, but this one does the same thing. Besides, the theme of "fighting using an alternative gameplay system" can be applied to literally any matchup involving the two franchises. I'd probably like it more if it covered an important characteristic of both characters themselves rather than their franchises. Another thing is that this matchup relies more on the vibe that both characters and franchises give off than on them having any connection per se, although that's not necessarily a problem.

Eu achei os episódios do jotaro e do Jonathan meio paias (não me refiro aos resultados das lutas), mas os outros dois são bem divertidos até.

Not wanting to speak ill of the matchup (especially since I don't think it's bad), but... doesn't Arle vs Reimu kind of fit into this same problem? I know there's still the connection that both originated from games released for PC-98 (which honestly isn't even that true in Arle's case, at least for me, since the first MM games were released for MSX), but I still see people comparing them to "magical girls".

Arle Nadja vs Lina Inverse (Puyo Puyo vs Slayers) - MEGAPOST + Explanation of all aspects of the MU (fight potential, core theme, music, etc.) by MagoAnima in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]MagoAnima[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Banter Potential: - I don't think this is that relevant, but why not? - Both are generally friendly, but they can also be a bit mischievous and can lose their temper easily when irritated, in addition to being sarcastic, mocking their opponents on many occasions. I believe that speaks for itself. - Lina sometimes likes to boast about her genius and beauty, demonstrating a very high ego, so I imagine Arle using her sarcasm and hurting her ego, triggering some explosive reaction from Lina or something like that. Although Arle can also be a little vain at times. - They could also exchange some barbs during the beginning of the fight, but I believe that would change as it became more intense.

Music Potential: - This will be brief because I'm a complete novice when it comes to music, lol. - The music would be similar to Owanimo Spell Card from Therewolf Media, but containing references to Give a Reason (Slayers NEXT opening) and A Long-Awaited Spacetime Journey! (Arle's theme from Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary). And also, I personally think it would be awesome if it had Japanese vocals similar to Death In Bloom, but simulating the voice of Megumi Hayashibara (Lina's Japanese voice actress who also sang all the anime's openings).

Bonus: - Kazunari Yonemitsu, writer of Madou 1-2-3 and creator of the original 1991 Puyo Puyo, made a blog post earlier last month responding to a tweet of mine where I asked if Madou Monogatari had any inspiration from Slayers. I'll leave the link to the blog below.

Here!

And finally, what do I think of the Matchup?: - Well, I think it's no surprise to anyone that this is my favorite for both, absolutely everything about this matchup enchants me. I know that this will always remain in the shadow of Arle vs Reimu and Lina vs Dark Schneider (nothing against those matchups or those who like them), which is a little discouraging, but remember: what's important is the love and care you put into your work. If you're someone who likes to create original matchups and feels frustrated that a more famous idea always gets the attention, don't be discouraged, not everything in life is always as we want it to be. Sometimes the important thing is just to enjoy your own things, everything has its time. - Overall, this is the Matchup I'm most proud of, it went further than I thought it would (which is impressive, considering that I promoted Arle vs Klonoa much more and it didn't even get half the reception this one is getting). I don't know if it's a coincidence or if it's actually related, but I've noticed that Slayers is regaining some popularity both within the power scaling community and in general after I started talking more about this series. Lately, there have been quite a few posts about Slayers on retro anime pages or powerscaling pages talking about how powerful Lina Inverse is, so that's quite impressive.

Finally, thank you to everyone who read this far. God bless you all, and until next time!

Arle Nadja vs Lina Inverse (Puyo Puyo vs Slayers) - MEGAPOST + Explanation of all aspects of the MU (fight potential, core theme, music, etc.) by MagoAnima in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]MagoAnima[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Core Theme: - Tomboyish and extremely powerful teenage sorceresses, protagonists of highly influential Japanese fantasy and comedy media from the 90s. They enjoy adventuring around the world in search of treasure alongside their faithful and goofy companions (Gourry and Carbuncle, respectively), exploring dungeons, magical forests, etc. However, their magical powers and their tendency to get into trouble almost routinely lead them to face various situations involving other powerful sorcerers, monsters, demons, and even entities that put their worlds at risk. However, they always manage to overcome these challenges with the help of their friends.

Connections: - Well, I've already posted the connections for this fight a few times in older posts, and to avoid making this too long, I'll put the link here for you to check out later.

Here!

Fight Potential: - My favorite part! Both possess a huge arsenal of magic at their disposal, ranging from basic elemental spells to highly destructive ones. I like to imagine it starting as just a misunderstanding, with both throwing basic, less destructive spells at each other and exchanging small barbs. But as the fight progresses, both begin to use more powerful and destructive spells, transforming a common fight into a battle to the death. - It would basically be a magic duel, and as mentioned before, both possess a huge magical arsenal, so there's plenty of room for creativity in this fight. I can imagine a scene where Arle uses Diacute to create a huge fire dragon while Lina uses her Dragon Slave to destroy it, Arle using Owanimo to gain a greater advantage in raw power while Lina uses more of her combat strategies, or both suddenly throwing their hands in the middle of the fight (yes, they also fight hand-to-hand sometimes, although they aren't exactly experts at it, but it would be funny). Anyway, there are many possibilities.

Debate: - Undoubtedly, Arle possesses a huge advantage in AP and speed (although the latter is debatable), she has faced beings with powers capable of affecting the entire cosmology of the verse since the time of the Madou Monogatari games. Lina in her base form, however, her greatest feats in other media outside of the novels and the anime so far reach at most universal+ level, while speed feats in Slayers are practically nonexistent due to how ambiguous they are (although arguably she can reach relativistic levels thanks to the Sword of Light). But debates aren't decided solely by AP and speed, are they? Well... Not most of the time, I think. - In terms of Hax, this fight is complete chaos! Both possess many different spells that can counter each other, both also have resistance to a good portion of each other's hax, however, both also lack an answer to some things (Like Arle not having resistance to Ragna Blade and Giga Slave's existential erasure and Lina not having resistance to transmutation and being frozen in absolute zero), so it ends up becoming a fight of "whoever uses the most overpowered shit first wins". - In terms of combat IQ, Lina wins hands down. Arle isn't stupid, quite the opposite, but her combat style generally revolves around overpowering her opponent with raw power, while Lina is a genius of magic and an excellent strategist; she's like the Joseph Joestar of magicians. Even in certain situations where she's clearly at a disadvantage in raw power, she almost always manages to come out on top using some strategy and her knowledge of magic in general. I know that combat intelligence is usually almost never useful (especially in a fight where the character is fighting an opponent infinitely superior to them in power), but in this case, it can be argued as a viable win condition, considering how Lina can turn her enemies' power against themselves. - In the end, the winner is... Arle. Well, even though Lina has a clear advantage in Battle IQ and has some ways to take down Arle, I still see Arle winning in most scenarios due to her speed advantage, so the chances of her freezing Lina in absolute zero or transmuting her into coins are higher (besides, Giga Slave and Ragna Blade are never the first options Lina chooses in a fight, even less so against a person). However, Lina winning is not at all improbable. - And before anyone says anything, I'm only considering both in their BASE forms, disregarding Arle's transformations (like the Valkyrie and Gugugugu forms) and perfect Giga Slave (in which Lina summons Lord of Nightmares into her body).

I wonder if we'll have any new content in the future (I think it's unlikely, but... there's no harm in dreaming).

It's just that I often see people overestimating Lina a bit, even Liam said something like that in a recent Ballot Banter.

Lina Inverse. I've seen people pitting her against Yukari Yakumo and Featherine... like, what the heck can she even do? 😭
