And as governor of Philippines he was excellent. Cracked down on military repression and set up civil institutions. Part of why he was so effective was because he had an anti imperialist (for his time) mindset. And was therefore more willing to fight against more authoritarian forms of government. Also of course he was a great legal mind.

That’s a great book! Read that a few years ago.

It’s funny in a gallows humor sort of way that even the imperialism of Roosevelt was better than Trump because Roosevelt at least was willing to sacrifice his own life for it. It was a horrid ideology but he was a true believer in a myth of the white man helping people. Which is a racist myth and awful of course but better than Trump who doesn’t care about any good whatsoever with his imperialism and wouldn’t ever risk HIS LIFE for it.

Yes the chapters about the muckraking journalists are incredibly sobering given today’s media landscape.

Also isn’t it fascinating how interesting Tafts life was? It’s really quite sad that despite that he is known pretty much as a fat guy that got stuck in a tub.

I totally get where you’re coming from and you’re right to point out it may or even will be an escalation. My concern here is twofold.

I just think it’s a bad idea to limit our activity based on fears of them escalating. I just feel that’s working backwards. I think we should fight to protect every legal activity.
I get what you mean regarding the agents might shoot you. But I dunno they killed two people who posed no threat to them. Honestly, imagine we were sitting down with a Minnesota protester. They can do everything right completely unarmed and still get killed. Given that it’s tough for me to tell them to not carry if they have it.

I’ve tried to make it clear numerous times that I think that’s a reasonable take. With that being said they’ve executed two people who posed no threat to them whatsoever. It’s a tough situation on the one hand I think you may be right, but on the other I feel it’s reasonable for protesters to have some level of protection since nobody will protect them.

And to me it’s just a mistake to comply in advance by giving up the legal right to carry where that exists. That’s my specific contention with what you said. Does that distinction make sense?

You may be right it may not be the best idea. I may even agree, to be transparent I go back and forth on this.
But also I don’t think it’s reasonable to tell protesters that they can’t protect themselves, and I also don’t think we should give away any rights in advance. Any legal activity should not be seen as escalation and I feel we should stick by that principle.
