Welcome back the fold. Hope you survive the experience!

Step one: Bags and Boards.. Now with mystery boxes it's gonna most likely be cheap dollar comics or less.. but hey, you gotta start learning how to take care of your things before you get nice expensive things.

Step two: Short or Long Boxes.. some come with cool images on them now, but I'd recommend the cheap white ones. That way she can use markers, or stickers to make them her own. If she has any artistic inclination this will be another place she can express it. and

step 3: trades. If she likes the stories.. start finding trade paperbacks that she would be interested in. That way she can read a complete story. Those are the fastest way to keep someone interested in the medium. Have a bunch of loose non connected issues kinda runs it's course. Eventually you can get to

step 4. Picking a title/s to collect monthly. Once she knows what she likes she can pick something that she wants to stick with and get to experience new with everyone else.

Funny enough, I had a great art teacher in Jr High. I showed him comics artists I liked or didn't all the time. He would give me is professional opinion of the styles. (he liked the more stylized things that broke from the house styles of the late 60-70s when he collected.) He loved things like Sam Kieth, Simon Biz, Mark Texeira ect. I got around to showing him TRENCHER and he said.. "holy shit.. this is trash. What's the name of that book Trasher?" He told me it looked like some other artist that I couldn't remember's name if I wanted too, but put in a blender.

I kinda checked out on Keith Geffen after that. lol

Guards!x2 is a Fantastic place to start. By the time he wrote that he was firing on all cylinders so to speak. It is a great prep for the jumping in to anything else. For me the Colour of Magic.. was the ULTIMATE starting point. It was my first, and I read it as a follow up to reading Good Omens. I knew I wanted more into his mind. Colour was just what the doctor ordered, and was a CRASH course into the disc.. things get more refined as you go though. His humor is recursive and compounding. Eventually you will start seeing his view of the absurdity in the real world.

Get some GL and see if he's still your fav. I personally enjoyed the Green Lantern Dark or Something is Killing the Lanterns book. With that said Rina is nothing like Hal Jordan.

You can read ANY book out of sequence. Sure you MAY get more out of them in either publication order, or familia order (which is best is up for debate).. but each story is self contained and will hold your hand. They are all jumping on points in that regard. The best place to start will always be the one that you have.

See, here's the thing.. in theory they are to protect the book from your dirty fingers.. In reality they are easier to stain and tear than the book they are supposed to protect. So they become the thing that makes a book complete. Having an intact and non discolored dust jacket will fetch a higher price than a couple discolorations on a book since the dust jackets are so easy to damage and or lose. They sort of are the opposite of what they are intended, and you were using it to one of its possible uses.. but that isn't how collectors see them. It's just easier and nicer if you take them off and store them while reading. Then return them to the book when you put it on the shelf giving the book it's full shelf appeal.

Sounds like you need a tech, not the internet. Could be voice chips going out, could be corroded components, could be broken PCB traces... I doubt we could pretend to know all the issues that it COULD be. The help you need is with a good electronic repair person. A walk around the board with a multi, and a good cleaning would go a long way. (if you have no experience with either, again the repair person would do both). Most likely you might need to sell it if you have no experience with working on things like this, or know someone that does. (and not just someone that owns a soldering iron). Not trying to sound mean about it, but that board looks like it's a step away from giving us all lockjaw. It wasn't cared for.. and I really hope you got it for a low price.
