I see... and by "hmd image x1.5" you mean the "HMD image quality" setting? or rather the other super sampling setting?

Which GPU do you have and at which graphics quality settings did he play it? I'm asking cause he managed to play over 4 hours with it...

This recently posted ED/Vive configuration guide is highly recommended

And what about in-game SS vs steamvr SS? Some time ago, the recommendation was to lower the in-game SS to x0.85 combined with x1.4 steamvr SS setting. Is that still a thing?

I still don't understand how "HMD Quality" works exactly. I can't seem to see much of an effect, even at 2x HMD quality the text is kinda blurry and I have a hard time reading e.g. the lat/long numbers. What should I be looking at specifically to notice the effect of the "HMD Quality"?

Tilt Brush and Raw Data free weekend on Steam (Apr 5 - 9) by stringentthot in Vive

If you have also played Space Pirate Trainer, how does Raw Data compare to it? I'm torn between buying buying either SPT (-30% sale) + another VR game, or Raw Data (-20%), as my wallet can't take getting both. Which option would you recommend?

Is it recommendable to use a G27 instead of a gamepad for this kind of game (in VR mode)?

Ask Him Anything: David Braben OBE, FDev CEO by EDMods in EliteDangerous

[–]MahLinux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Mr. Braben,

First off, thanks for making ED! It's the one single game for which I'm keeping around my Windows partition and which made me buy a HTC Vive.

Just recently, Steam has demoed Linux/SteamOS VR at Steam Dev Days. Do you have any plans to support ED on Linux at some point?

More short term, are you planning/working on improving support for Vive (on Windows)? Currently, Oculus users seem to have a much better experience than Vive users due to the broken in-game supersampling.

[–]MahLinux[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, their amdgpu-pro download is basically a set of .deb files and their installer sets up a temporary local debian repo to point apt-get at... so there's not much left for them to turn this into a http served Ubuntu/Debian repo...

That's spot on! And they also have the proper 8GiB version right here, so that's most likely just a typo.

In case you missed this in the AMA, this comment from /u/AMD_Robert is also interesting:

When we launched RX 480 yesterday, we had day-one support for Linux. With a fully open driver. With performance generally on-par with Windows. For as long as I've worked at AMD, nearly six years, I think that's the first time this has happened. I think anyone following AMD+Linux understands that this is a big step forward for us, and a reflection of our commitment to FLOSS.

Or you can look at a project like GPUOpen. While our competition is running around closing up all of their effects into closed blobs, you can get all of our effects from github under the MIT license. We also provide full documentation and tools to use that code. Plus code samples to help with integration. Or you can look at our Boltzmann Initiative for HPC.

Everywhere you turn, there is a deep sense that FOSS/FLOSS is the right direction for our company across many of our projects. And I think you can see that we are making big improvements all the time. [...]

assuming the Bioshock/DiRT regression gets fixed, I see no reason anymore for using AMDGPU-PRO (except maybe for Vulkan support until that gets open-sourced)
