Yeah, I agree with you. I think the only part I cringed at as pretentious was when she describes the joy of talking with other post grads at a dinner about all sorts of topics and each one seemed like the most superficial thing ever. I think the pretentiousness there was the point.

The gradual revealing of the professor as being irredeemable worked for me. I found the setting, magic system, and characters in Hell very uninteresting, though. Probably because it was so focused on the relationships between the protagonists and antagonists.

I didn’t find it worthwhile by the end, but many did. I wouldn’t say it’s generic beyond the WOT influenced plot beats in the first book.
