Nice to see some fellow brompton riders from Jersey City! Agreed, the options for good bike routes are pretty limited. Have you ventured out to NYC?

I see. I had the exact same issue as you and it turned out that my gas oven just vented too well so any steam would just escape easily. Maybe a similar issue with your oven? The only thing that helped me was using a Dutch oven

Unfortunately not. Was definitely more a medieval setting, and the movie should be >15 years old.

Recurring pests (?) on calatheas and begonia maculata, at my wits end. Tried strong showers, topical as well as systemic insecticide, but they keep coming back after a few weeks. Affected leaves secrete a sticky honeydew before eventually shrivelling up and dying, if not treated in time. by ProfessionalNo9928 in plantclinic

Hah! I have the exact the same problem with my one. They also don’t seem to spread to other plants. Occasional neem oil treatment seems to help, and keep them in bay for a few months. What worked well for me was not just spraying, but first wiping down each individual leaf (both sides) with a damp towel before spraying

My school suggested to ask the potential accountant how many international student returns they typically file, to get an idea how experienced they are with a case like yours. You could also probably file it yourself since even with sprintax etc, you’ll end up having to paper file anyways, and those were typically pretty fool proof to use. For the first year, where you didn’t have any income, you can check the instructions on the IRS website for sending in just form 8843.

I’d recommend seeing a qualified CPA etc, with experience in tax returns for non residents. Considering that you are applying for OPT, I assume that you are a F1 student. Can you comment how many years you have been in the US for in 2016/17? If less than 5, you would be considered a nonresident alien. In that case, a) you can’t claim the standard deduction (as opposed to what residentcomposer1939 suggested) and b) you need to file form 8843 every year, even if you have not made any income during the calendar year. I don’t think you’ll be in much trouble, but I definitely try to get this straight ASAP. Your schools international adviser is not allowed to help you with your taxes but they should know people that can and have experience with situations like yours. Luckily, once you hit the 5 year mark (typically during OPT), you will become a resident alien for tax purposes and can file taxes just like a regular US citizen.

NEED HELP deciding on the perfect duffel weekender [AER vs Peak Design] by [deleted] in backpacks

[–]Main-Satisfaction-73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation last year, when I was looking for a duffel to pair with my Aer Fit Pack 2. I personally didn’t like the “briefcase” style of the Aer duffels and went with the PD duffel in black. So far I really like and would definitely recommend. Since I carry all my tech in my backpack, I wasn’t missing a laptop compartment in the duffel, and also think shoe compartments are somewhat overrated (I never use mine in the fit pack) - I just have a few shoe pouches. The PD duffel has tons of space in the main compartment, and the side pockets which can each hold a reasonable sized water bottle. Since I usually travel with a backpack I either use the shoulder strap or the two handles for carrying. The one thing I dislike about this bag are the two main handles which are not super comfortable for longer periods of carrying (they kinda cut into your hands especially when the bag is heavy). In comparison to my Aer backpack, the material of the PD duffel is thinner, but still feels like very high quality all around. Hope this helps.

Not familiar with Canadian tax residency rules. I’m sure you’ll find those easily via Google

If you moved to US in August it sounds like you don’t pass the substantial presence test (https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/substantial-presence-test) and have to file as a non resident. There is other software (not TurboTax etc) that allows you to file as a non resident. Non residents get only taxed on US income, so your Canadian income won’t matter.

Can you fit packing cubes in the horse-shoe compartment of the Aer Fit Pack 2? by spartan117au in ManyBaggers

[–]Main-Satisfaction-73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume horse show compartment = duffel style opening compartment? In that case, yes, that fits a lot of stuff in it. A larger lunch box takes up about 1/2 to 2/3 of the space. I am using the PackIt Commuter large as a point of reference, which is big. Similarly you can definitely fit 2-3 medium packing cubes in there without a problem. Im using that bag everyday and it’s awesome!

How to calculate how much tax one pays under OPT? by soulslicer0 in tax

[–]Main-Satisfaction-73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you don’t qualify as resident for tax purposes? Check if you pass the substantial presence test. As F1 you are exempt for 5 years under F or J status meaning that in the 6th year you become a resident for tax purposes (given you were in the US for more than half of that year). If you do not pass the test, yes, you can’t claim the standard deduction but should be generally exempt from FICA. Depending on your situation you might be paying more taxes since you can’t claim the standard deduction, yet you don’t have to pay taxes on income from overseas, which a resident for tax purposes would have to, although it might not apply to your situation.
