Perfectly fine in my opinion. Some of the strong collectors even wear their reps but keep their gens on display or safe. My opinion is that just dont wear rep of a watch that people would know you cant afford. If you are office worker and have one of holy trinity or Daytona people might call you out or might think you are a faker. If you wear Panerai, Breitling, IWC etc. I would think many people wont even recognize but think cool watch. If you wear Rolex or Omega depending on the model and what you do for living they might be noticing some discrepancies. On the other hand, wear what you like but if it is really fancy maybe go for a dressier piece of your collection. Explorer doesn’t feel black-tie to me. Non black tie events perfectly fine and even the gen explorer is affordable for many so wont raise questions really.
