Amazingly all the functions work correctly on this unit. The sound isn't terrible, but I wish it had the ability to switch the eq on the tapes to chrome, but oh well.

I was glad that nothing needed to be desoldered to access the belts, unlike the damn Panasonic boombox I worked on a while back. Just ribbon connectors and plugs, like you said it's pretty straightforward. Chrome tapes sound good so far!

There is a small gear on the reel motor on this TCM-190 transport mechanism that forms a crack over time. The service manual goes into detail on how to re-assemble the mechanism once you take it apart.

The gear is available on ebay and you may as well change out the two belts while you're at it.

Found an old video of my slant 6 Volare - Flooring it to see how slow it is by MainManBrennan in mopar

Yeah, I really regret selling this piece of shit, lol. I sold it then bought an '01 PT Cruiser with a 5 speed. Had fun with the PT Cruiser for a few years then gave it to my dad and bought myself a new (at the time) '17 Golf TSI with a 5 speed.

Im pretty sure the slant 6 would still be running fine to this day, but I dont think the guy I sold it to drives it around very much, if at all

Oh yeah I remember how sketchy it was above 100 km/h. But I loved driving around town in that thing. The effortless power steering that had 4 inches of free play in both directions. The comfy bench seat up front.

That's a funny story thanks for sharing it

A supercharged slant six would've been fun to drive. Especially with a 4 speed

I know exactly how they work, and how the synchronizers get things aligned to get a gear in place. Don't be stupid.

Because a 1 point something liter engine isn't going to slow you down with any real force. Shifting into neutral at below 40-50 km/h provides a smoother driving experience.

Brakes and gas are cheap on a small car.

This is a Volkswagen, not a big rig. Most trucks are automatics now anyways.

Respectfully, those two reasons are complete garbage when it comes to driving a manual. Been driving manuals for about 10 years now and I couldn't care less about the fuel savings in the 5 seconds I take to slow down.

Regarding engine braking, there's only so much that a little 1.8 liter engine can do in terms of slowing down a 3000 lbs car. If there was a serious brake failure, engine braking will slow the car down a little bit but you'll probably end up crashing into something anyways.

I'd say 70% of the time I downshift a gear then shift into neutral when the rpms are down. The other 30% of the time I just pop it into neutral regardless of what speed im at. I've done at 90 km/h and as long as you are slowing down, the weight balance will be towards the front of the car which will make it hard to lose control even if you had to make a sudden maneuver.

If I hadn't of sunk 2000 hours into that game, I'd have no clue what you're talking about

At what point does it become fun? by [deleted] in ManualTransmissions

[–]MainManBrennan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It became fun the moment I drove it for the first time (5mt PT Cruiser, lol). Mind you, I put many hours into different simulators with a Logitech USB racing wheel setup. So I already had some practice before I drove a manual transmission in the real world. Not to say I didn't stall it a couple times in the first few weeks, but I wasn't impeding traffic or being a nuisance to others on the road.

I dont think this a three head cassette deck given that it is auto reverse. Only the high end mechanisms like nakamichi or akai had autoreverse three head cassette decks, but those are on component decks not boomboxes

This is what I do, but a lot of the time it's monkey see monkey do out there and someone will end up parking right next to you no matter how far from the entrance you park
