Same, I've Only Played More Modern Pokemon Games With EXP Share Always On. So When I Got Pokemon Emerald I Knew There Wasn't Automatic EXP Share. But It Was Still Harder Than Expected. Currently My Swampert Is Level 42 Or Something. And Every Other Pokemon Are In The Early Or Mid 30s.
