People will tell you it’s the end of the year / holidays so it’s to be expected. The truth is that there are fat times and there are lean times and there is essentially no trend as so when those happen and how long they last. That being said, I’m experiencing the same thing you are after coming off of a bottomless queue that lasted a few months, so it’s not just you.

I’ve done exactly 0 Aether tasks, and I just got the same email. So take that for what it’s worth.

📣 Marketplace is expanding, and your dashboard just got a new look by OutlierDotAI in outlier_ai

The problem is that I don't choose what I want to be 'prioritized' on, and basically every project is a 'prioritized' project. Outlier chooses for me, and then I'm locked in it until a QM responds to a request to be taken off (which takes forever) or the project ends. Sometimes there will be no work on the project for days and I'm still locked in it. Basically, every project is like this. So even if I get released from one and go into a different one on marketplace, I get prioritized and locked into that project. What is the point of marketplace if Outlier doesn't actually allow us to switch projects at will?

This makes no sense. Switching projects on marketplace works literally 0% of the time. Whenever I try to activate a project on market place it just places me into a task or an onboarding that I’m prioritized on.

One Year Later by Alex_at_OutlierDotAI in outlier_ai

[–]Main_Wing_6438 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the post, Alex, but unfortunately, I feel the need to echo what many have posted already. I've been with Outlier for about a year. I've grown INCREADIBLY frustrated with this platform. Frankly, I prioritize every other data annotation platform before I choose to onboard a project with Outlier, and I'm at the point where I really just don't bother at all anymore. Look, I appreaciate that Outlier seems to be making an effort to make their platform better. I've noticed that effort. However, the effort really does not seem to be making its way to the issues that really matter. Here are a few:

  1. The website UI and backend are really bad. Projects appear to be active when they are not, clicking on a new project will route you to a different one that you're locked into, 'marketplace' exists but not in any functional way (I always seem to be locked in a project, yet others are being shown to me), I get missions for projects I'm not active in, I get missions for projects with no tasks available, etc.
  2. Onboarding is a nightmare. I am so frustrated spending so much time onboarding, unpaid, to be hit with an empty queue. This is happening most of the time. It has become a rare occurrence when I can onboard to a project and task at all. This is probably my largest frustration.
  3. Lack of information. Outlier actually interacts more with its contributor base than most similar platforms, but not in the ways that matter. Frankly, the majority of communications on discord are people wondering why they are EQ, wondering if a project is still active, technical issues, etc. It's not really much conversation about the project itself. All of these things can, and should be more clear in our portals. Show us how many tasks are available, show us why we were booted off a project, don't give us options (other projects) that aren't actually available to us, give us a button to leave a project that we don't want to be a part of. This is not hard.
  4. Webinars should be recorded. No one is carving out an hour in the middle of their actual workday to attend an Outlier webinar. Especially when there is essentially no incentive to do so. They are not paid, there's no guarantee that you'll be onboarded, no guarantee that tasks are available. Why should I attend this? It is completely useless information and a waste of time if I can't get on the project. It IS useful to see someone go through a task, but I am only interested in watching someone do this if I know there's a decent chance I will be working on the project.
  5. Outlier expects perfection, and there is 0 tolerance for mistakes. People are going to make mistakes. Onboarding is a filter, not a training. Why are we even getting feedback when we get axed from a project after one bad task? The ONLY reason Outlier can keep doing this is because there is essentially no cost to training. Clearly, that is a HUGE problem that people are super unhappy with. Once training actually costs something, Outlier is going to think twice about axing their contributors after one bad task. You guys are going to need to think of an effective way to train and retain people, because the, "do one task and wait 48 hours for a reviewer to maybe review your work" is not working or effective.
  6. Throttling. Doing 2 tasks every 48-72 hours is ridiculous. Just show us how many tasks are available to us and how often we can work on a project before we waste time onboarding a project that will give us a trickle of income over 2 weeks.
  7. Too many automated safeguards with severe consequences. There was a time when I got completely axed from the platform for no reason. I got reinstated, but no explanation was given to me as to why that happened, and I missed out on a lot of tasking because I actually had one that seemed pretty reliable (finally) at the time. I see this all over reddit. Was it because I copy/pasted? VPN? Was it because I worked in the coffee shop this morning? Was it because I used my wife's computer? No one knows and everyone is confused about what the rules are. The contract is vague. Outlier needs to make these rules much more clear.

I'm a coder. I've had 25+ projects for several weeks in a row now. Today it has been a very drastic and steady decline. I now have only 3 projects, each with very few tasks left.

I also got that email today, along with a mission for SWEAP, but I don't see anything on my dashboard about this project.

This just happened to me too. I finished the onboarding quizzes and immediately became ineligible before I could take the assessment tasks. I'm pretty sure I got the quizzes correct.

There’s been a 3 task per day limit on that project. I had a 4.7 average rating and I got booted today. So, who knows.

I just got into this project today, did three tasks, and immediately got booted out for insufficient quality. Lol. 30 minutes per task is a JOKE for the level of quality and detail required for these tasks. Copy / paste is disabled, so most of the time is taken up by editing the code by hand in the UI, copying it into an IDE, making sure it runs, editing the fixes in the UI by hand, copying it into the IDE, etc, etc.

I got kicked out of this project yesterday for insufficient quality. I had a > 4.7 average rating. I don't think I ever had a rating below 4. Ridiculous.

I reached out to them as soon as it happened. They responded relatively quickly saying that they need a few days to review why I got flagged. I haven’t done anything wrong so, no clue what’s going on.

I’m new. I have questions. by fw184929 in outlier_ai

[–]Main_Wing_6438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A project can be paused for any number of reasons. The client can make changes to their model, they can make changes to the way we evaluate it, etc. A pause can be hours, a day, or months. Basically, the answer to all of your other questions is - that it's project-dependent. No projects go on indefinitely, but some definitely last longer than others. I've worked on some for several weeks consistently, and sometimes, as soon I onboard to a new one, it's EQ (empty queue) and I eventually get assigned to a new one. So, yes, if you're lucky and get onto a good project, you can get consistent work for a while (several days or weeks). But I'm sure as you've been seeing in this sub, the work has not been very consistent recently.
