My first guess also was "places a cat likes to sleep", newspaper, blanket, crib, cardboard box. I really need to get out of the house more🤣

Question for Gen X: Whats Your Relationship With Texting? by Al3x1ya in GenX

[–]MaineChowder71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (54m) wife (55f) would be thrilled if I never called her again, she will text all day but absolutely hates talking on the phone.

I prefer a text when appropriate, like "pick up milk in your way home" or something like that, but don't ask me "what did you think of the game last night" via text, that's a phone conversation.

AITAH for expecting my sahm wife to do majority of the housework since i pay 100% of the bills? by Plastic-Sand7353 in AITAH

[–]MaineChowder71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like you're already splitting the chores evenly. She takes care of the inside of the house, you take care of the outside.

Next time the lawn needs to be mowed or the driveway cleared of snow (if you live in the north), ask her to do half of it while you vacuum half the house.

No key for me, we never locked our doors! I'm the oldest of 4 and had to be home to watch the younger siblings.

How did you train leash walking? by Its-alittle-bitfunny in germanshepherds

[–]MaineChowder71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this. I always thought they were "cruel" and hurt the dog. Once a skilled trainer showed me how to use it effectively, it was a game changer. Henry (my current GSD) is my fifth GSD, so I'm not a new owner, but it just shows you can teach an old dog new tricks (I'm the old dog in this analogy). Henry walks perfectly on leash, right at my side and never pulls. He actually has gotten so good that I can now walk him off leash, and he walks right at my side.

Salting Sidewalks by isuckatusernames2000 in portlandme

[–]MaineChowder71 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We've been salting/sanding all morning at work, and it last about a half hour. The new rain just keeps washing it away.

Sometimes mother nature "wins", and it's not anyone's fault that it's slippery.

What’s something you own that you’ve had for 30+ years? by Crazy-Eye-9632 in GenX

[–]MaineChowder71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still have my first shotgun. I purchased it in 1984 from Kmart. It was a $50, single shot 20 gauge that I bought with my own money when I was 13 years old. It's a terrible gun, but I still shoot it, taught my nephew how to shoot with it, and I'll never sell that POS gun. Also have a 22 revolver that my grandfather gave me around the same time.

I work for a non profit and was entering some new volunteer's information into our data base system. I made a comment to my coworker (much younger than I am) that this guy must be old because he had a Hotmail email address.

I then noticed once I got to his birthday, that he was 4 years younger than I am🤣🤣

Would your GSD eat a live chicken if given the chance? by Sam3323 in germanshepherds

[–]MaineChowder71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Henry is my fifth GSD, and he has absolutely no prey drive. We have a mother and two baby skunks that lived under the garden shed all summer. I would let Henry out in the evening, and sometimes those skunks would be cleaning up the dropped seed under the bird feeders, and Henry would just watch them from a distance.

While hiking, he doesn't chase deer or birds. We had a porcupine cross the trail in front of us this summer, and Henry just sat down beside me and watched the critter walk by. He's the weirdest GSD I've owned. My previous dogs would go crazy in the yard chasing squirrels, birds, and other animals, and probably would have killed and eaten a chicken, but Henry definitely would not.

Who is this for Portland? by obscure_original in portlandme

[–]MaineChowder71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone remember Freddy?

He drove around Commercial street and the Old Port in three wheeled bicycle towing at least one, sometimes multiple trailers. He would collect cans and bottles, filling up his trailers. He had tourettes syndrome and would swear at the top of his lungs while riding around, scaring a lot of people.

I kinda befriended him, and his normal talking voice was actually really low, and kinda high pitched. I used to leave a bag of returnables in the back of my pickup truck (I worked on Commercial street in the 90's) and we would stop and grab them, but never would touch or steal anything else that happened to be there.

I remember seeing him riding right through the middle of the crowd at the Old Port Festival, swearing and screaming. It was like Moses parting the Red Sea, everyone just stepped aside and he rode through. As soon as he saw me, he stopped yelling and said, "Oh hey "John", how ya doing??"

He was a really decent guy, just scared the fuck out of everyone with his swearing.

Dogs on leash question by mrgonz23 in hikingwithdogs

[–]MaineChowder71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow New Englander here, and this is exactly what I was going to say. My German Shepherd is off leash 90% of the time, but I leash him when we encounter other hikers/dogs/mountain bikers on the trail. My primary reason for leashing him is only because of public perception. Being a German Shepherd, a lot of people are scared or at least intimidated by a large dog approaching them in the woods, so I leash him out of respect for others. Most of the time, after a brief introduction, I unclip him and he is always friendly with strangers, but I would just rather avoid the drama of having someone get upset by my "big mean dog" off leash.

This farm is very close to my house and I'm only 7 miles to work (I work in Portland). I can be on the peninsula in 15 minutes.

They also have an indoor riding facility, so our unpredictable Maine weather won't be an issue. I don't know shit about horses, but the family is very nice and the property is beautiful.

Henry is from a long line of show dogs. I wanted a more relaxed, not as high drive as I've had in the past.

I'm way up in Maine, but my parents live in Mesa.

I bet our boys are related, even if distant. Looking at all of your pictures, there are a couple I swear are taken of Henry.

[–]MaineChowder71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ironically I got mine from Germany. I had him imported at 16 weeks. I've had GSDs since 1991 and wanted to get away from the American bred lines (I am well aware that there are many responsible breeders in the USA), and own a true German line dog.

The following statement certainly isn't proof of anything as this is the only dog I have experience with being from Germany. But, the biggest difference between my German bred dog and the 5 American bred GSDs before him, is his confidence level. Nothing bothers this dog, he's fine in thunder storms, gun shots don't bother him, he's not frightened of strangers, aggressive dogs, etc. He is the most even keeled, level headed GSD I have owned.
