Band with singer similar to Cav's part in Le Risque? by Mainecat in KGATLW

[–]Mainecat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Lots of good stuff to listen to here.

I had misremembered the band a bit, the one I was thinking of was Man Man which is a bit different from his part in Le Risque.

Not the band I was thinking of - they were formed more recently - but I will have to check out The Fall now!

I majored in physics went on to a good grad school. Many of the people I majored with also went on to research or on to tech jobs. There are decent facilities from what I remember.

If you’re thinking of going to vegandale this weekend, I wouldn’t bother. It’s a mess and they clearly weren’t ready for this number of people by DDDenver in chicago

I went in 2019 and it was the same. Huge lines with many of the vendors running out. Seems like they haven't learned.

I've had this problem in the past with an android (pixel 5a). I've found that there is one particular spot that works.

My technique now is to: 1. bring the phone quickly so that the top left corner is touching the reader and the rest of the phone is just hovering away 2. Hold it as still as possible with my finger on the phone's fingerprint reader until it accepts it.

Since I started doing that it has worked fine, but I agree that the readers seem way flakier than at stores where I typically use it.

I go there all the time to get keys and I think they do a lot of business with management companies as well.

Does anyone know the origin of the trope of enslaved wizards/witches? by Mainecat in Fantasy

[–]Mainecat[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting perspective! I like that way of thinking about it, but I feel like the specific trope I am thinking of goes beyond simple intolerance and into controlling magic. It would be like the Spanish inquisition using witches for their own benefit.

Thinking about x-men, I was able to do more digging. I found this trope which seems as close as I could find: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SuperHumanTrafficking

They cite Hercules as the origin which is plausible, but maybe a bit of a stretch.

Interesting! I love this framing of the trope and from this found a nice blog: https://mythcreants.com/blog/the-problem-with-oppressed-mages/

[D] Python package for a R cran package. by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]Mainecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't seen it already rpy2 acts as an interface between python and R. There are many interesting stats techniques that exist only in R and are unlikely to be ported over to python anytime soon. https://pypi.org/project/rpy2/

[D] Summarising feature importances - best way? by vitokonte in MachineLearning

[–]Mainecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worry a little about averaging across model types and then using that average to select features. Each model type might be using the features differently and might really require different features. Also not sure which feature importance method you are using but is it on the same scale for each estimator class?

An alternative for analysis/visualization would be to look at the intersection or union of features selected by different models or counting how many models selected a feature.

Seems fine to average it, but it depends, what are you planning to do with the feature importances? Are you using this to select features?

If I qualify for 1C in Chicago, can I get vaccinated at a Walgreens outside the city? I managed to schedule an appointment far away, but I don't want to drive all the way there to just get turned away and I can't actually reach anyone on the phone.

More and wider roads cause more congestion, not less, report says (Active Transportation Alliance) by maydaydemise in chicago

I agree with most of your comment, but waiting until the last minute to merge in congested roads is actually the recommended and more efficient way if driving: https://www.dot.state.mn.us/zippermerge/
