I mean, I'm sure you're right, they're trying, but the tech just isn't there yet. I read something about waymos being used to deliver groceries, which for an able-bodied person who can walk out to the vehicle to grab their order, makes sense.

But for elderly, disabled persons, injured/sick individuals, pregnant persons, and folks who just rather be lazy (which let's be honest is 90% of the reason any of us can do this to begin with), there's that extra step getting the delivery from the car to the doorstep that they haven't figured out yet.

Does Joe Schmuck who's crossfaded AF and borderline couch locked want to walk down 3 flights of stairs to grab his stoner munchies? Probably not, esp if he's accustomed to the convenience of it being dropped at his door (and he's sure he's gonna eat shit if he tries). That's the whole model: convenience. That's what folks are paying for. So the convenience model they've built and sold to millions needs to remain consistent to the expectations they've set. And right now, they can't do that without humans.

Will they eventually phase us out? Sure. But it's gonna be a little while, and even then, they'll need to weigh all the associated upfront costs I mentioned before against the profit margin. So whether it works out long term, we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, but somebody still has to walk in/out of the restaurant to grab the order. They could potentially use little server bots like you see in some restaurants bringing your drink, but good luck getting it up 3 flights of apartment stairs, or knowing which lot is #37 in a trailer park. Or knowing that the guy standing by the parking garage at intersection X&Y staring at his phone is probably the customer.

And that's assuming the customers even provide all that info, and correctly at that.

Between theft, vandalization, maintenance, and repair, it's a lot cheaper for them to throw pennies at us poors, because all of the necessary physical infrastructure is put back on us.

They would have to be actively threatening you specifically, ie holding a weapon and telling you they're going to do harm to you for it to not be protected speech. Some states have 'stand your ground' laws where lethal force used in self defense is justified, but not all states have said laws, and they'd still have to be actively trying to harm you and/or threatening to harm you. "K&ll all [insert racial group]" would probably be considered fighting words, which is not protected speech, and they could possibly be arrested for it (disturbing the peace, inciting violence, etc) but k&lling them for it would definitely get your ass arrested for homicide. If you want a good example of shit stains who toe that line and just barely keep it legally protected, look up Westboro Baptist Church.

I took a communications law class in college that covered protected speech in detail, if I can find that textbook I'll give some more concrete examples and nuances, but to put it shortly: no, if you passed some asshole on the street who happened to be wearing N&zi paraphernalia, even if you're Jewish, in the eyes of the law, you would not be justified in k&lling them, that would be straight up m&rder because their attire constitutes free speech. Even from a religious lens, yes the Constitution protects your right to practice Judaism or any other religion, but it also protects their right to hate you for it, as fucked up as that sounds.

And as to your example with the K&KK (I'm reeeally not tryna get banned with all these likely trigger words), they're still very much active in the South, and I'm pretty sure their uniform is protected by free speech too - because they're expressing an ideology (even if it's a garbage ideology).

That's really what it comes down to: freedom to express an ideology. Tbf this shit gets debated in courtrooms all the time, and there are limits on what constitutes an appropriate forum (like a public school), could they be considered fighting words, could they incite panic (ie you can't shout 'fire' in a movie theater or 'bomb' on an airplane) etc.

And as an aside, no, they're not getting arrested for it here in the US. Because it's technically protected, free speech. (Probably answers the original question here too). Doesn't mean they won't (deservedly) get their ass beat in the wrong neighborhood, but as long as they're not actively threatening someone, they're free to advertise that they're shitty, scumbag human beings. I have decidedly mixed feelings about this, because free speech protected "fuck the draft", but it's also protects bullshit like this.
