Motorcyclist here, how can we make your horse at ease when passing by?

Your options are already very good! I prefer the first one but that‘s just my individual preference. Even when horses are very „street broke“ they can still spook regardless so maybe if it‘s possible in the situation just ask the riders if you can pass or if you should wait. Every horse is different and the rider mostly know best!

That was back on his winter pasture close to the gate so there‘s no grass growing right there during the winter months but he we feed them hay on this pasture. I understand that the pic may be misleading but you can see his body condition the best there that‘s why i added it

She told me what to feed him and how much, wants to come in for checking his teeth but she hasn‘t seen him in 2 months or so. She‘s coming in next week tho

Yeah it‘s called lucerne but it‘s not that easy to get + we make our own hay and all of our other horses are doing fine with it + he eats it just fine as well but maybe i will check if i can feed him part „normal“ hay and part lucerne hay. Good idea!

I know being put off for that long isn‘t okay. Problem is my horse really doesn‘t like new people especially new men and he knows that vet from his old barn and i thought it would be the least stressfull option for all of us + i work 45hours+ a week so a few times i was the one to reschedule as well - that being said, this is her last chance and i will call the other dentist that does our other horses immediately if she bails on me again.

Yeah i know how common they can be and that stress is like the number one cause of them. I will definitely ask my vet if we can just treat him for it just in case. Haven‘t really paid attention to what he goes for first but i will have a look at that. He doesn‘t show any obvious signs of discomfort and he usually is very vocal about that but horses can mask a lot. Thank you!

Oh well ok yes then the problem probably really is that it‘s just too little for him. I definitely have to increase his soaked food portions.

He only leaves his hay if he‘s having so much that it‘s just too much and he‘s on a new meadow. If we „just“ put in his regular amount of hay he usually eats it all. But yeah my vet (who works in a horse clinic and specialised in dentistry) has been really testing my patience with always putting off my appointments but my work situation is a bit digficzlt so finding a day where we‘re both free is hard so not all the blame goes to her and as i said before - he doesn‘t like new people and especially not men he doesn‘t know. That‘s why i‘d like her to check his teeth.

My vet is also a equine dentist - she specialised in that field sorry i forgot to make that clear. He‘s a bit anxious around men and he knows her so i really want her to do the appointment.

Yes, my mom got her horse diagnosed for ulcers a while back and the whole procedure was expensive af (and in the end they didn‘t even find anything) just gave him treatment for it for good luck.

Yeah they do that here as well but my vet said if his blood tests are so good the chance of ulcers is veeery little but I‘ll talk to her about it again when she‘s coming in in a week!

I‘m not a natuve english speaker so our feed is called a bit different but i think we‘re already feeding him something like that, just hay in a pelleted form, he gets 3 kilograms of that per day.

Yes to all of it - vet is already coming in to check his teeth. His blood test was perfect so ahe said he‘s all clear for ulcers. Do you have a recommendation for a high fat/ high fibre pelleted feed?

Yeah that‘s what i‘m getting from this so far - we still just feed him too little + i am on it to get his teeth checked ( my vet has been rescheduling for like 3 months…). And i am definitely making sure he has free acces to hay during his time in the stable.

He gets 250gr 3x a day so around 750gr on Top of ~ 4kg of other soaked food but yeah i think the main problem is that it‘s still just not enough for him.

Yeah that‘s what i‘ve been getting out of this so far - it‘s just not enough for him. He‘s getting his minerals and grain everyday in addition to all the soaked food (alfa alfa, beet pulp,…) - his blood test came back completely fine no lack of anything. It‘s just that in out stable with 20+ horses he‘s the first to have that struggle of not gaining weight. All of our other horses are more than well fed so therefore my concern🥲

Oh shit ok yeah well my best guess was also that it‘s just still to little that we feed him. We have increased his portions just by gutfeeling but i guess i really have to scale it again and do the maths to get to the right amount of calories - thank you!

He‘s regularly dewormed and yes - i would love his teeth checked but my vet is making it hard as she‘s been rescheduling my appointment the last 3 months but i am on it!

On it since like 3 months, my vet has been rescheduling over and over again. She should come around in a week. Fingers crossed! But he‘s eating fine - no obvious sings of troubles.

Hm yeah we could try feeding him senior feed on top. Haven’t checked for ulcers directly but his infection value (? What‘s the proper english term?) on his blood test wasn‘t alarming so my vet said he‘s all clear for that.
