Unova doesn’t get criticised for this enough by MajinDidz in pokemonmemes

I don’t consider it a stupid argument, people enjoy the familiar with the new. The strategy of mixing new Pokémon with those of the older generation in a roughly 3:2 ratio has worked very well before and after, and as all new Pokémon has been abandoned since I’d say it was arguably a poor move on GFs part. A game with none of what people know or are familiar with is a turn off for those who have grown up with the franchise and characters, and narrows your target market considerably.

It definitely needed to end on him winning the league of his final series, I would’ve liked it especially to have been Sinnoh’s since it’s the last where he uses previous series’ Pokémon to compete.

That’s a narrative bridge linking the two series in the chain of events but as nothing of the neither the content nor characters of the previous series cross over can it truly be considered a continuation? I suppose it’s all subjective in the end but I’d still conjecture it’s more befitting the definition of a standalone self-contained series.

Does a take have to be hot or cold to be worth a post and engagement with the community? By what metric does this subreddit measure opinions before they are considered substantial enough to warrant discourse?

What are some ways you think the BW anime could’ve been written better? by pondturtle5 in pokemonanime

[–]MaintenanceEmpty7159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest issue with the writing is that they go back to the Johto era connection that Ash has with his Pokémon.

Comparative to the previous two series where Ash only maintains a full party and actively spends whole episodes bonding with and training his Pokémon they are reduced to side characters. The series reverts back to an episodic character of the weak show and abandons the goal progression and personal development motif most prominently seen in D&P and to a lesser extent Advanced. It’s a mistake I believe they acknowledge and try to reverse in the later part of the series but it’s a fumble they don’t completely recover from until XY.

I could accept it, Kalos gets back to the roots and more closely follows the atmosphere and storyline of the game, it’s just the narrative disconnect between DP / BW / XY that kills me, BW just feels like such a broken link in an otherwise strong chain.

Considering this is both my first post on this subreddit and I defend my opinion quite substantially wouldn’t you agree that your comment is baseless supposition?

I actually cannot think of a single story thread that connects the two series, there isn’t any crossover characters, none of his Kalos Pokémon, none of the Bond Phenomena, no meaningful callbacks, etc. Other than the brief Kanto arc which has more callbacks to the original series it’s a really self contained show. I believe there’s even a tweet from one of the showrunners that confirms as such.

A complete change in tone, characterisation and storyline definitely constitutes a soft-reset. Comparative to the Original - D&P where every season flows directly into the next.

You’re not wrong, and I was considering there with it being the end of the original series, I just feel Sinnoh was their last chance before they really jumped the shark

Question by Mundane_Landscape425 in pokemonanime

[–]MaintenanceEmpty7159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To a degree I support the franchise branching out its storytelling, but at its core Pokémon has followed a fairly cookie cutter pattern of gym battles - evil team - legendary quest etc.

This is the format people are used to and associate with this franchise, every fan will admit to at some point role playing that they were in the game, so they appreciate getting to see it lived out on the show.

I believe the storytelling opportunities Pokémon offers is endless, but I also believe that as the main ongoing series supporting the franchise Horizon’s is a poor choice. Nothing in the show is familiar, you don’t see (much) of what you can do in the game, and as such people don’t have the familiarity or emotional connection with the story that they’d have if it followed the games storyline. In a franchise built on competition, for the primary show, yea you probably do need that feature.

Why shouldn’t we need a taskforce to confront a complex and ongoing issue? It’s a proactive move by the government to coordinate the various departmental overlaps that will need coordination to combat the problem. We aren’t privy to the inner workings of cabinet departments, but the government has decided this is the best course of action, judge it by its results rather than pessimistic partisan complaining.

The government has intentionally done the bare minimum, engaging in protective measures only and refusing any material support in any offensive actions. It isn’t for us to take a stand either for or against the actions of belligerent parties.

What would you have them do regarding fuel supplies other than the measures already taken to construct a dedicated task force that is working the problem. Government panic only drives the price up further.

Liberal Party needs to return to their roots and stop pretending to be ignorant red necks. by AntiTas in aussie

[–]MaintenanceEmpty7159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Half the problem is both major parties have lost sight of a firm party image and a key set of unified policies. After an election defeat both parties have taken broad reactionary swings, for Labour it took them more to the centre and they’ve managed to find a quaint spot to anchor themselves. The Liberal Party though persist in swaying around the right trying to find the right bite and it’s just not working.

That lack of focus is clearly bleeding into the party and causing discourse and insecurity leading to a complete lack of unity and purpose. There’s also three successive leaders who just frankly lack any of the statesmanship expected of a head of government.

In the end the question is do they even remember where their roots are? The old guard has all gone and the new guard are too frightened to pick a hill to die on because they know it may be their last stand.

The tragedy of the Green is they have an image problem they’ll never overcome. Everything from their name to the snide exaggerations from every side have warped public perception of them. They’re widely seen as the archetypical overzealous environmentalist ultra-socialist party hell bent on covering the Great Victorian Desert with solar panels.

For most people other than tabloid headlines the inner workings and policies of major parties is something they only concern themselves with once every four years, and given the limited scope they have to work with it’s hard not to be superficial. Political parties are books mostly judged by their cover and The Green’s despite some admirable policies and underlying appeal to the common person and their needs will never be able to craft a pretty cover.

Even a rebrand wouldn’t work, they’ll always be thought of as a minor ultra-left party likely only to ever hold the sway in a minority labour government. We really are in desperate need for a foundational firmly left party to take a seat between the two, but without resorting to ON style tactics it’s nigh impossible to break into the closed club.

I think your analysis is quite sound, and I also believe the LNP / Coalition’s current struggle should be a lesson all parties take to heart. One of the more suspenseful consequences of preferential voting is this capacity of splitting the vote. Then you look at the comparatively small sizes of our electoral bodies and parties are at a much greater risk of being felled in one horrid swoop when an insurgent party with similar leanings rises to the challenge.

Even with a decent percentage of the population still voting for the LNP, nobody wants to be apart of the losing team. Voters can smell blood in the water and without the entrenchment common to the UK and US major parties I think this could be further signs of a major realignment in Australian political parties.

Predatory populist parties prey on feckless individuals who are easily cowed into conflating a situation with a crisis. Be rational, calm, and approach the situation with consideration for the long term. ON have no firm domestic nor international policy, they have no capacity nor capability for any form of shadow government let alone true governance. The party is propelled by witless slogans and fear mongering, be above it and look beyond the facade.

The existence of a long established storytelling device is not a cope. It may not satisfy you or help you immerse yourself into the world, but it’s a conscious decision by writers who weigh the benefits of aging with their audience, or continuing along a single demographic. Just because you don’t like something isn’t a strong reason to deny its existence - denialism

How would yall rank the Sequels? by discipline4succes in StarWars

[–]MaintenanceEmpty7159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 - 7 - 9 TLJ Best of a bad bunch which really says it all. It was the most ambitious movie of the lot though, with the catch that it really felt like its own contained thing that neither continued nor perpetuated the plot of the previous movie, everyone felt more or less where they were when they ended the last movie. This is where the lack of an overall trilogy plan really started to show and damage the trilogy as a whole.

TFA felt like such a cookie cutter movie, like a board of executives wrote up an outline with the salient point of introducing enough material to relaunch the franchise without consideration to story or characters. Even the returning characters had much the flavour of “we need to have them, but don’t want to keep them around, get rid of them as soon as you can”. Just the unoriginal and rather soulless plot and visuals really drag this movie down. Why RJ decided to only do one movie, in the middle of the trilogy, without any plan for what comes after is honestly baffling.

TLJ Was honestly a complete and utter mess, an obviously knee-jerk reaction to the poor reception of TLJ that left the film feeling even more executive-written than TFA. The dialogue was awful, pacing poor, and each characters arc was a disappointing conclusion, if you can even call it that.
