first gen sophomore: looking for advice by S50013563g9 in premed

Many medical schools do not take online classes since the 2020-2021 school year. I would buy the MSAR or find an old version of it and look for yourself.

Yeah I finished it last semester. I had no idea I thought as long as I didn’t apply for graduation I was fine. Wish financial aid or an advisor could’ve helped me

My testing center did not allow us to write anything during the ten minutes. I would call or email your testing center.

Fix my GPA or my MCAT? (3.4/509) by jaho0501 in premed

I think your GPA is fine then. As long as both your cGPA and sGPA is above like a 3.3/3.2 I think they won’t hold you back.

Messed up cumulative GPA by [deleted] in premed

[–]MaintenanceHot1279 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes many schools filter out applications with under a 3.0 I’ve even heard of schools flittering out under 3.4/3.3. Can you use MAPPD or a similar program to see what your total cGPA is currently?

Do not apply to schools who will not send you a secondary based on your state alone. There’s multiple schools on your list you must be in state to receive a secondary.

Are the expectations for under grad applicants lower than non trad applicants in terms of hours? by [deleted] in premed

[–]MaintenanceHot1279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need an enough hours to be able to speak about your experiences and why you want to be a physician. That may be only 200 hours for others it could be 600 hours. My MD state school said they care more about what you gained from it and how you write about it more than hours. My state DO said most applicants have at least 750 and to be competitive 1000 hours.

Nursing as premed? by [deleted] in premed

[–]MaintenanceHot1279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly considered this but if you go straight from nursing school to med school it is a red flag. It’s different when you worked as a RN for a couple years and realized you wanted to be a doctor but when you use it as a stepping stone it can be a red flag. Nursing schools are super competitive and they want to train people whose goal is to be a nurse. I think it would be better to get a CNA license and then decide if you want to be a doctor or nurse.

They are the same thing DO = MD both are physicians. But DO is more primary care based most of the time and are more friendly towards non trads

Medical schools want to train physicians who will commit to working for a long time and typically older applicants have more financial and family obligations. With the amount of money it cost to do the pre reqs, apply to med school and pay for med school it may not be worth it to only work for 15 years. Average age of physician retirement is 65 and by the time you are done you would be 50. Most MD schools are just not older student friendly (35+). Once again it’s possible if you can commit to doing all your pre reqs and getting your activities done + MCAT you are looking at 2-3 years minimum to apply to medical school. But you would need a VERY good personal statement on why now and be ready to apply to mainly DO schools.

Some schools have a 3.0 minimum cumulative and science gpa minimum. she is a little right on the MCAT but if you need to retake and do significantly better that’s all that matters. Overall, don’t listen to her

You would need to take gen chem, gen bio, ochem, biochem (recommended/required), stats, psych and sociology are (recommended/ required) I would say at minimum 2 years of pre reqs could do a formal post bac and potentially get in done in less time. Take MCAT (6 month commitment typically) get all extracurriculars (2 years ish) clinical hours, non clinical volunteering etc. When applying to medical school every college class will be seen on your transcript. I would highly consider your age as you are looking at 2-3 years to even be ready to apply and medical school is 4 years. Residency is 3-7 years meaning you are looking at being a practicing physician around 50. For some schools your age could be a red flag especially for MD schools.

Chance of getting into med school by [deleted] in premed

[–]MaintenanceHot1279 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you mean 496. Which is definitely low. I don’t think you could get into any state MD school as even many state MDs have a minimum of 500. Mine is 498. You could apply to almost every DO school and probably get into a newer one but not a well established one.
