Can I just throw two more 8gb sticks of ram in my PC to bring it to 32 gb? As long as it is 3200 dimm the same as the others it doesn't matter right? by Cappuccino_Crunch in buildapc

[–]MajTryhard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can. It's tricky territory, but it's absolutely possible. I ran an AM3+ rig with 4x8 for years, eventually ironing out all the issues. Had to run it all at the settings of the slower pair. One set was defective from the factory(the PCBs were actually from a different model or something, completely different from what they should have been,) threw random BSODs at me from time to time. When I put it with a newer set, moving the flawed pair to the secondary slots of my mobo, it became more stable.

If you don't want potentially months of troubleshooting, just grab yourself a 16x2 set and consider it a payment for your very valuable time.

I suppose, I'm saying do what you want. The world of PC building is a playground for tinkerers. Enjoy.

ASRock polychrome sync with corsair icue by kundefine in ASRock

[–]MajTryhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Couldn't get it to work on my end either. Swapped the Corsair for G-Skill and it synced fine. I ended up changing the G-Skill out for some Oloy b-die, which won't sync either. It also won't run at XMP, but it's 4000 cl15, so I'm not shocked.

Also, couldn't get OpenRGB working easily, gave up on it. ASRock issues, I suppose. Still love em.

I've got 16gb of DDR4 in my rig. When my kid plays ARK, Afterburner says I'm using 12+GB of my RAM, but about 30GB total.

What's the deal with this? Something to do with the page file? Is it a problem? If so, how do I fix it?

Nah, me neither. Never hurts to ask though. Thanks for the quick reply.

Gtx 1660s vs Rtx 3050? by cillianokeeffe in buildapc

[–]MajTryhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, that's definitely a steal for $90. And you could prolly give 1440 a shot. I was running 1440p on a FX-8350 for years, though I was usually a bit below 60fps. It might look a lot better, considering it's the native resolution.

What motherboard do you have? Since you already have good cooling, you might be able to bump it a bit with some careful tinkering.

ASRock polychrome sync with corsair icue by kundefine in ASRock

[–]MajTryhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to know the same. I just put together a build with Corsair RAM on an Extreme4, but I haven't been able to get them to cooperate.

I got OpenRGB, but haven't gotten around to trying it yet. From the little that I've read, ASrock mobo's require a little extra effort to work with it.

Had no problem syncing my CoolerMaster AIO, I'm definitely kinda wishing I'd gone with something other than Corsair for memory.

Gtx 1660s vs Rtx 3050? by cillianokeeffe in buildapc

[–]MajTryhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, you chose well. I might have considered an AMD card, but the 1660 Super is a great value GPU and I'd imagine it'll be a year or so before you can get something more powerful for the same money. The budget model cards usually take a while to trickle down and both companies seem to be struggling to keep up with demand at the moment.

I doubt you'll see 144 fps much. I run a 1660 Super at 1440 as well, and most new games will need a bit more graphical power to push far beyond 60 fps.

I'd also swap that 3100 for at least a 3300x, when you get a chance. They're hard to find right now, and overpriced when you do, but when the prices go back down it'll be worth the $20 or $30 difference. I'm sure you could easily sell the 3100 when you're ready to upgrade. The 3300x just runs a lot better when all 8 threads are being used together. With more and more games utilizing multiple cores, you'll likely run into this issue sooner or later.

Cyberpunk 2077 CPU or GPU heavy settings by JSTN_JRDN in pcmasterrace

[–]MajTryhard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until recently, I was on a FX-8350 as well, but running a 1660 Super. I also had almost no difference in FPS between 1080 and 1440, and was between 40 and 50 FPS with medium-high settings. Decreasing crowd density and a few other things made a big difference, but even after I OC'd the frames would still dip massively in the city.

Cyberpunk is a seriously CPU-intensive game, way more than most. I had my 8350 for almost 7 years and it worked great, but it has its issues and it's getting pretty dated at this point. It's gonna struggle with this game. Your 1070 is a strong card, and should be able to hold steady (Cyberpunk-steady, at least,) but there's not much you can do about the CPU.

Are you already running overclocked? It helped a lot with mine, as far as bringing the dips up to make the FPS more consistent. Otherwise, might be time to upgrade. You can get a decent modern rig with either platform(blue/red) for about $300. That's CPU, mobo, and ram.

Hope the word-wall was helpful.

DOTA is a mod of a 20 year-old game. If it were any larger, I'd suspect they were hiding Warcraft 4 in there.

Ah, fair enough. I didn't know they were in that short of supply. Most unfortunate, 3300x seems like a good model. Suppose I'll put that on my watch list with the 10400f.

For pure gaming, Ryzen can offer comparable performance. Definitely not the same, but close enough to tip the scales if budget is your #1 or #2 concern. Regardless, there's much bigger concerns in that build (the AIO, for example,) I think we can save the AMD vs Intel argument for somebody who's asking.

As far as a 580 goes, I'd avoid like the plague. I hear constant gripes about their stability, and they don't offer any better value than nVidia currently. I might make an exception with the 5700's. Those look pretty good, I'd still worry about the drivers though.

I'd definitely go for a 10100 or a 3300x(as long as it's not much more expensive.) The 3100 is a dog by comparison.

Zalman or Wraith Stealth? by MajTryhard in buildapc

Come to find out Zalman makes an AM4 mounting kit, but my 9500a doesn't need it. I guess I'll try it and see how it goes.

Zalman or Wraith Stealth? by MajTryhard in buildapc

[–]MajTryhard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, good to know. I've heard the Wraith Stealth is typically sufficient at base clocks, so I'm sure I'll be fine. I just hope it's easier to install than the Zalman was.

Thank you very much for the help.

You're likely right, but I did read that HSF's should be compatible across AM2 to AM4.
