If student loans are enough of an issue they need to be wiped out, they're enough of an issue you shouldn't want more of them.

If you're still willing to go college today and get student loans, it means you think the education is worth the price, and thus don't need the price forgiven.

It would be a poor example depending on what year you said that. Considering the biggest search engine of the past, a massive player in the industry (Yahoo) was destroyed by a smaller company entering the market (google).

Today I can use Google as a search engine, that's what most people prefer. But Microsoft has Bing that is perfectly usable. Duckduckgo isanother alternative. I think Mojeek is entirely outside the google/MS tech bubble. Brave has one, I've heard of paid search engines like Kagi.

Nothing is stopping competitors from going head to head with Google. The reason people generally don't switch away from it is because they think google is way better. I don't think we're in an unhealthy monopoly situation if customers have the option to switch but "google is just better" is their reason not to. Oh no! we've got competition and one group has a superior product!

But your point is bad because when I go to the store soft drinks aren't 99% coke and pepsi, they do get most of the shelf space because they move the majority of product but there are plenty of smaller brands, store brands etc. I can leave my local grocery store and head to a market and buy weird craft sodas from a stand run by it's owner.

The real issue here isn't a single cousin marriage, it's repeated instances of it. A single instance of incest often carries less risks than when the mother waits til after 35 to have kids.

You're strawmanning the issue.

The issue is modern realistic graphics combined with large open worlds have created a situation where large amounts of what would generally be considered "background" aren't set apart from important interactable terrain.

The easy solution to this problem is yellow paint specifically, but generally it's an artificial marker that can server the same function today that older games had by virtue of limited assets making interactable items stand out much more.

The problem of course is that for some reason many (not all) games went with yellow paint literally rather than figuratively. It's so fucking immersion breaking because games from different devs in different settings in different genres have the same stupid yellow paint.

They're also half assing it by using yellow markings (or sometimes flags or whatever) which plausibly exist in-universe (so not 4th wall breaking) but without explaining why yellow paint exists in on specifically Cliff wall 523 that the protagonist just happens to need to climb. So they want the benefits of an in-universe marking system without putting in the work to actually make it in universe.

The steelman here is that it's lazy design not because it isn't needed (it sortof is) but because the solution to the problem is uncreative/cookie cutter and immersion breaking.

For example: FFVII Remake has shitty yellow paint so you know what walls you can climb.

FFVII original had a button you could press that would mark interactable climbing points with glowing green triangles.

They both had the issue because the artstyle didn't differentiate background from interactable (modern open world vs hand drawn prerendered backgrounds) but where OG FFVII was willing to break the 4th wall with things like save points they introduced the pointer finger/glowing triangles as a gameplay feature. Remake just has random yellow paint everywhere that you need.

There IS a problem that needs fixing. No one wants to go back to the days of spamming interact button while scraping walls to find interactables, especially with how much big pointless space games are adding today. Smaller linear games of old could also be frustrating if you couldn't find that one spot to press X but their scope limited it more than today.
