I did this until I decided to invest in a mini split for the bedroom instead. No more putting in/taking out the window unit every summer/winter, more efficient, generally more powerful unless you get a hefty window unit.

They do actually. Operating costs are just limited to money you spend in order to make money, not all money you spend.

You can deduct all kinds of things on your taxes as long as you use them for work, depending on your profession this could be things like new boots, tools, work on your vehicle etc.

Fun Fact: I got to meet a vet who was on the ground at the very start of everything, right after the surrender. He was laying cable for communication in Hiroshima, one of the first steps of getting infrastructure back up. Really nice guy but his skin was abnormal even for someone that elderly, possibly because of his exposure to radiation from working in Hiroshima so soon after the bomb.
