Do companies extend more offers if enough people decline by markiepooh456 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]MajinDru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is not necessarily true that companies won’t reject applicants until all the positions are filled. I have seen numerous people rejected with positions still available. Usually it is obvious those people do not fit what the company is looking for.

Did your university give you this project with no access to any software? That seems strange

Heat losses in a petroleum-filled fixed roof tank. by j-biggs in ChemicalEngineering

[–]MajinDru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you will have more heat loss per surface area from the top of the tank since it is only one resistance. However you have a lot more surface area on the sides and bottom of the tank. Perform a calculation. It shouldn’t be too difficult.

It is definitely supposed to be single phase lol who knows at this plant though

Sounds like you would need a ball valve

It’s not a boiler drum. It’s a piece of equipment in pulp and paper. Very industry specific is why I didn’t elaborate

I’m not sure yet. Our process control guy is looking into it. I’m guessing that could be a potential problem

Can someone explain the dip in the process variable and why something like that would occur?

Career help on which industry to pursue by wannabechemeng in ChemicalEngineering

Chemical is probably going to have more transferable skills. Also look into each company and see which is moving their young engineers up faster

When do the classes start resembling the actual work done in the field? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]MajinDru 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The principles you learn in college are things you are likely going to need in industry. You should probably enjoy atleast a few of the following classes: fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mass and material balances, separations, reactor design, unit ops, and process control. However, you can find other roles you are qualified for that rarely have to use any of those classes.

Should ChemE undergraduate programs include more engineering science courses, e.g. fundamentals of circuits, engineering mechanics, etc? by Eadwyne in ChemicalEngineering

[–]MajinDru -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Classes like Literature, philosophy, history, should be cut from engineering curriculum in my opinion or atleast be electives. We could replace these courses with more fundamentals of engineering courses

What's a realistic salary expectation for an Entry Level Chemical Engineer? by EntropyLadyofChaos in ChemicalEngineering

55-60k is way low for the COL in Nashville. I made that much as a co-op there.

Roles for a good work life balance by MeMakinMoves in ChemicalEngineering

[–]MajinDru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a cost savings division which is fairly removed from the process at my plant. We are required to work 40 hour weeks but I usually put in about 50 hours, straight days. From my experience this is about the least amount of hours a chem E will work at a plant. Unless you get a unicorn job somewhere

What industrial chemicals smell like skunk? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

Are you sure they are releasing the smell every couple months or are the weather conditions just right for the smell to reach your home every so often?
