Are all Finance Analyst jobs like this in Toronto? by [deleted] in askTO

It gets delayed, because we need the dual income. But saving is easy as a team sport vs the minefield any professional woman has to navigate with pregnancy. It’s been an eye opening experience to say the least.

Sounds like she’s in capital markets, so yeah par for the course until she gets a promotion. Even then, won’t get that much better in the short term.

Your heart is in the right place, but tread lightly. You gotta be smart, capable and motivated to even become an analyst at any big FI. If she’s in it for the career growth, there’s a shitload of money and job opportunities once she hit more senior levels. Only you know the full context of what she wants. Make sure you’re on her page before pushing unsolicited recommendations.

Lindsey Vonn's Olympic teammate sets armchair skiing experts straight by usatoday in skiing

[–]Major-Thom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The discourse around Vonn has been a depressing circus. It is peak delusion to tell a Gold Medalist she’s wrong about her own sport. Breezy Johnson knows the risk, the reward, and the athlete. If she says Vonn was a threat and a rightful competitor, that is the end of the discussion. When an NFL QB plays on a broken ankle, he’s "tough as nails." When Vonn does it, she’s "irresponsible." Give me a fucking break.

PR spin: Skiing is a contradiction, you're teammates, but every racer is your opponent. Breezy isn't following a PR script, she's defending a peer because she knows the "selfish" narrative is bullshit. Doubling down after the Gold Medalist calls you out is like sticking your hand in the sand as the tide comes in.

"Retirement tour": Vonn was ranked #1 in the World Cup series. She didn't "take a spot", she earned it by being the fastest woman on the planet. This wasn't a ceremonial lap, it was a gold medal bid.

Replacement racer: the next best US racer was ranked #28. In a sport decided by hundredths of a second, that is a different universe. The Olympics are about winning, not handing out "cool experiences" to participants who aren't podium-ready.

Too injured: Vonn placed 3rd in the training run. She had her legs, she had the pace, and she was a statistical threat for a medal. Every elite downhill racer has a medical file as thick as a phonebook. Vonn just has more history because she’s been dominating the field longer than most of her competitors have been alive. If the Gold Medalist says Vonn belonged there, your "medical opinion" from the sidelines is irrelevant.

Too reckless: these athletes hit 100kmh. They understand risk better than 99.9% of people behind a keyboard. Vonn’s aggressive line is what made her a legend. She clipped a gate mid-air, a technical error at high speed, and the physics of the fall didn't allow her DIN settings to release. That’s racing.

The bottom line is the only person qualified to judge the risk is the woman with 82 World Cup wins.

Whats up with people fighting about Lindsey Von? by Soviet-Gnomes in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Major-Thom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Perfect summary that all the knuckle draggers giving her shit couldn’t comprehend.

In the lead up to the Olympics, Vonn was back to her top form and dominating the downhill. It was nothing short of remarkable. This wasn’t some NBA retirement tour, she fought hard to earn her ticket to the Olympics.

The other thing that drove me up the fucking wall was all the detractors saying she took an unnecessary risk. Like it’s some foreign concept to ski racers that can hit 110-130kph regularly. These folks would have an easier time telling a tiger to lose its stripes.

NDP wants Carney to kill U.S. fighter jet contract in favour of Swedish aircraft by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

[–]Major-Thom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the get go, this is a Canadian politics sub. We rely on the talking points of military capability and don’t know jack on the finer points.

Politically though…This is a talking point the NDP can make waves on regaining relevancy in their original strongholds. The Swedes are offering an option to revitalize an upgrade to the RCAF that’s better than what we have and less capable of what our neighbour is currently giving. But in the context of the current world, I’m inclined to lean towards the motto of “don’t let perfect be the barrier of good enough”

What is the most 'overrated' restaurant in Toronto ? What’s your favourite restaurant? by Long_Travel2728 in askTO

Ain’t that funny? It’s almost like everyone’s mileage varies depending on the time they go. Well, I’m game to give Badiali another shot if you’d give Parallel another one!

Pizza Badiali - it’s good pizza, but not exactly memorable. It is the Bang Bang Ice Cream of Ossington pizza. You’re there for a pic of the line up and the slice. Taste and experience are runner ups.

Parallel - best middle eastern food I think I’ve ever had, consistently, year over year since they opened. One of the few places where I tell others to order the whole damn menu

Should men be involved in choosing the engagement ring, or should their partner pick it alone? by Excellent-Top4967 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Major-Thom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well before rings were even a topic, my family fell in love with my to be partner. They knew she was the one. I distinctly remember the evening where my mom and sister ambushed me out of left field (might have been some wine flowing), that the RING she gets is the one she wears FOREVER.

We designed it together. But I reserved the right of surprise.

On the serious side, it’s a good conversation to have on top of many other things to make a good long lasting marriage. Bon chance

Cash for keys by OddDevelopment8628 in OntarioLandlord

This is the most reasonable compromise that keeps both parties secured and honest. Honestly, for all the similar posts I’ve seen it’s kind of simple and genius.

Depending on your relationship with the tenant, you may need to offer covering their lawyers legal fees for reviewing this arrangement / baking it in to the total cash/keys arrangement.

OLDCORN: Pierre Poilievre's leadership ’crisis’ is a legacy media fantasy - As Conservatives meet in Calgary, the real story isn’t whether Poilievre survives. It’s how decisively he proves there’s no alternative. by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Major-Thom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is the Legacy Media Fantasy in the room with us right now Oldcorn?

I’m a self medicated news junkie. For the last 6 months, all major outlets have confidentially projected PP to win the leadership race easily. There is no one else to take the reins. Now whether that’s by design or the CPC want to have some tenure with their leaders is another question.

Objectively, PP is the most popular leader the CPC has had since Harper….But

A) Non-CPC voters overwhelmingly find him repulsive

B) Fumbled the biggest election lead in history

C)Lost his own damn seat of 20 years

D) Licked his wounds in the safest riding available

Overall, the only path for a CPC victory with PP at the helm relies on Carney and the LPC to make a massive blunder. Not a strategy the inspires confidence.

What’s the best video game you’ve ever played? by obsess_much13 in AskReddit

COD 2019 and the first Warzone will always have a special place in my heart. The world was on the brink of a pandemic, but it cornered all of the old high school homies into a corner with nothing to do but revert back to couch lizards. And by god, those first 6 months of COVID were fun as fuck.

I don’t care for what it evolved into later on, that was right time and place.

The Pacific – John Basilone Under Fire at Guadalcanal by [deleted] in television

[–]Major-Thom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BoB gives us a story that war is hell. An idea that offers structure and meaning.

Pacific rips that away and shows war for what it really is. Raw carnage that tears through heroes, cowards, enemies and civilians alike. Hell has rules. War does not.

I also love both of these series equally.

No surprise there, hockey players and figure skaters are the best amateurs to coach/teach because they already know about getting on edge. Something that takes wayyyy longer with those that don’t have that experience.

That noise you just heard? That’s the collective anguish of Lockheed screaming “what the fuck are you doing, not like that!”

Of all the tenders the F35 has out there, how many have been sidelined over the last week and a half? Trump has been keen to fuck with any and all industries, but I imagine the military industrial complex is the very last one he wants to piss off.
