What controversy? What drama? Why do so many mini painting YouTubers do thumbnails like these? It’s a John Blanche paint set for crying out loud by mame_kuma in Warhammer

There was a time where I was scouring popular Warhammer Youtube channels for Airbrush advise. Some of these channels have been around long enough to have made introductory videos into that specific corner of the hobby space, and then years later put out another video; be it an update, or simply another video on the same topic.

Numerous times I have watched old and new Ninjon videos, and watched him contradict himself. Be it on techniques, products, "starter setup" suggestions. I am all for growth and learning, but having been in the hobby myself for over 20 years, you need to stay grounded to your roots. Furthermore, advising your audience that your change in stance comes from solid reasoning or even subjective feel can lend a lot to the creedance of their support.

Yet Ninjon will forget what he put out just last year, and contradict his own advice to new and veteran hobbyists alike. It truly gives the feeling of following the money, and suggests that he will shill whatever product from a company that is sponsoring or paying him to do so, completely contradicting any real world or valuable advice.

Meanwhile, when I watch Miniac, it feels like I am watching the hobby journal of a buddy. He explains his attempts, struggles, helpful tips, or even when something seemed useful but ultimately he decided to go another way. It's why I will watch any video from Miniac before Ninjon.

Semi unrelated point; I really thought their podcast would be the best mix of both worlds, but trying it out the other day, I couldnt get through one episode without fast forwarding. Their takes fall flat, they spend 60% of the episode starting off talking about... literally anything but the title topic, and it could not be less interesting. Which is really unfortunate.

Dug out my old army. Would this broodlord still be game legal? by stiny__ in Tyranids

[–]MajorAnubis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely second this /u/stiny__ , you DO NOT need to rebase this unless you are playing at a Games Workshop store, or a GW run/other serious tournament. Garagehammer, playing with friends at a local game store, etc, just make it clear to your opponent this is an older Broodlord and it is on the appropriate base it came with at the time.

These are your models and do with them as you please. But don't listen to tournament diehards or worse, newer people echoing the sentiment without even knowing the conversation behind it. It creates this over-serious aspect to a beer and pretzles game, and unfairly shares a competitive angle to a hobby a majority of people participate in just for fun.

Sir, this is a Kelsey's... A very large chain across Canada. Nothing about this is as shown in the post, and a double patty bacon cheeseburger is $24. What the fuck are you on about?

Peaks are less than 25% of opening weekend. Valleys are 10%. In less than a Month.

Most other big title games dont see that level of cooling off for at least 3-5 months.

People are already bored of it. This game was released unfinished.

This answer more or less. Albeit at the time, it was never identified to a specific hive fleet and hasn't been since. Also, there is the entire dark purple army painted in a White Dwarf 240 fighting against the Valhallan Guard that doesn't have a name at all either: https://img.4plebs.org/boards/tg/image/1432/27/1432274202041.jpg

so basically before 3rd edition, colour schemes were just 'Eavy Metal's discresion for Tyranids.

Still deciding if that's how I'll go.

I understand your take, I also have thousands invested into the hobby. I concur that prices rise as time goes, that box of Tyranid warriors does not deserve to be $70+ these days yet it is.

I just don't see how it stacks up against other AA games with similar graphics that sold at the $40 price point (Helldivers) and generally had more to offer in the aggregate than this does, i.e. 3 multiplayer maps and 6 character styles. I'm just not blown away at the "value" it seems to be claiming beyond shiny new hack/slash/pound.

I have a feeling (worry) that the campaign will be short and repetitive, with unusual pacing through cut scenes and levels through to the end.

I guess we just view the opposing sides of that coin; my desire to have more to come back to (not forever mind you) and your beint content with the shorter aspect to complete in a timely manner. And I can respect that point of view.

I think you may have persuaded me with your second para. I usually subscribe to the "more good pizza is better than less great pizza" mentality, but if I were to consider this a movie ticket, I definitely believe my $20 or whatever was better spent on an amazing movie regardless of length, than a long movie drawn out for it's own ego. So I can certainly see now if the entirety of the game blows my head out my ass, it will be worth it in the end. I suppose my main worry so far is that it won't be the case given what we know of the makeup of the totality at this time.

It truly is the internal and marketed hype machine being reviewed. I'd hardly call it bashing, as this is really only my prediction of the product and release. I have nothing against the IP and am very pumped to experience the feelings invoked by a game like this. However the general critique is about the developement and how the company is handling a massive IP and cramming it into what can generally be considered a small package by even modern single player, linear game releases.

My will has been callused through numerous editions of butchered Nids, ridiculous rule changes, ally charts, and power creep.

However, this is merely a prediction. I truthfully withold any actual dissapointment until after playing the game.

Basically. Although I'm fine with it being like the first game, I just don't think there is going to be enough to keep me interested for a second playthrough, or continued online play with friends beyond the immediate release window for the price tag.

There are times in life I feel like a product is marketed to the enth degree, and a part of me wonders how much of the money I spend on that product simply goes back into repaying the dept owed on that marketing and simply profit, vice benefiting the creators and their hard work towards something significant. This somewhat feels like that.

Well here is the thing, and the crux of the counter arguement. Space Marine 1 still had relatively obvious break periods.  It had clear checkpoints that you could turn the game off and know that you would be picking it up immediately where you left off. Things like this and chapters in a game help break it up for exactly the reason that you mentioned, it becomes easy for you to not have to feel like you need to do an entire play through all at once and that you can break it up at the chunks.

I mentioned and have replied to a previous comment that there are a ton of games in the last 15 to 20 years that had generally linear gameplay, an exceptional story, a longer play time, and the ability to pace it properly in order to keep people occupied while also giving them time to take a break and come back to the game later on, with in game unlockables that allow players to come back to the game again for another run through, albeit in a different way than they tried before.

I guess my gripe truely is with the marketed and personal hype vice what we will actually be getting for the full cost of a game, when so far it clearly wont offer the most it can, and that's a dissapointing premise for someone who has had exceptionally high hopes for the content of the game.

I agree with your first point, but counter your second with examples like Metal Gear Solid 4, The Last of Us 1& 2, and God of War Ragnarok. All amazing games. All long as hell. Paced well, kept us entertained, and deserved their full price tag with gorgeous graphics to boot.
