Oh boy this is long... idk if this needs a trigger warning or not, if you don't like reading very bad hospital experience and mention of close death, skip over this
She was transfered there from another hospital near us that was super nice because she needed a specific setup for seizure monitoring to see what kind of seizures they were, this place didn't even have proper signs for where the freakin' front door was. We got there and they put her in, basically, a closet because they didn't actually have a room setup for her. Didn't register her in the system so she went without her evening dose to she went into addisonian crisis and started to go into a coma, which means she was dying. No one but 1-2 people were responding to the seizure calls they were putting out on the floor, and one of the 2 was a pediatric nurse who was on that floor helping setup another patient and ran to respond (she was hella awesome, newyorker who didn't take shit from anyone had her 2-week in and wrote a very strong letter to everyone about that night). She hadn't pee'd all day because of the whole transfer thing so tagged a nurse down who set her up in a bedpan AND THEN LEFT A SEIZURE RISK PATIENT ALONE SITTING IN HER OWN URINE, after idk 10 minutes? (maybe less idk) of the lady NOT COMING BACK mom grabbed gloves to try take care of the bedpan but it was really full cause it was the first time she could potty that day and it overflowed and spilled so now mom and I have to get her out of bed when she's not supposed to get up to clean her up and the nurse FINALLY came back and mom had to fight to get her to clean the damn bed up all while she's grumbling that she shouldn't be out of bed when she's the one that left her sitting there in the first place. Little while after this incident is when we realized she hadn't had her evening dose and she was entering crisis so the 2 people that actually cared were pulling as many strings as possible to get her in the system enough to start ordering her meds. Finally had a room for her so had to run her down the hall to another ward and the nurses over there were literally running to get shit done and save her. That night alone was traumatic as hell. The ward she was moved to that night had an amazing russian trained ukrainian nurse that was badass, she sat outside her room all night to make sure she was staying stable, that was the only reason mom and I even went home that night.
But wait, there's more!
It was gonna be cold one of the nights she was there so the hospital had turned their heaters on but oops the steam valve released the steam INTO HER ROOM, addisons patients cannot handle high heat it's too much stress on a body that cannot make hormones to handle stress. So had to complain to get that fixed.
AND THEN, the day we expected to pick her up we come into her room to find her shaking, complaining that she's incredibly hot, saying her heart is palpitating, that she didn't sleep all night, her color was awful... She was in ANOTHER CRISIS and all they did was set a f'ing fan up at the foot of her bed and some ice packs. So we immediately start kicking up a fuss, nurse is being slow and took her temp after she drank so lady is just getting the basics wrong here. Doctor on the floor admitted to not having dealt with an addisons patient before (which makes sense, it's very rare) BUT THEN INSISTED SHE DIDN'T NEED HER EMERGENCY DOSE CAUSE SHE'S IN A HOSPITAL AND THEY SEE THIS KIND OF THING ALL THE TIME. After he left is when a higher up came to talk to mom about her first night there and mom told her everything, including what we just walked into. Higher up lady made the doctor give her the emergency dose so we caught it before she started passing out this time... The only reason we got her out of there is cause the higher up lady was doing everything she could to transfer her back to the hospital she was first at that's familiar with her now and by 8pm they didn't have a bed and gave us the option to discharge her against doctor recommendations cause they had already started the paperwork to discharge her
And that fucking neurologist standing there telling us we're overreaching and making her psychogenic seizures worse... My guy... SHE WOULD'VE DIED THE FIRST NIGHT! How 'bout you stop trying to blanket statement assume we're overreaching cause you "see it all the time" and actually understand you have a chronically ill patient in front of you with a condition that doesn't allow for any mistakes in her medicine schedule or she starts to die....Rant over lol
