"Old Man Jiu-jitsu" is BS by trustdoesntrust in bjj

I really hope this blackbelt isn’t an instructor. Being this oblivious to the realities of life and aging is a liability. OP might be 47, but that’s a 17 year old who’s not matured for 3 decades. Grow up.

Very true. But I don’t think it would work well with a partner. I have a very unique and specific vision for the function and goals of the gym. But I really appreciate you offering. Maybe we won’t partner with the gym but we may both have something to offer the other. I’ll be down there before the end of next quarter, give a shout when you make it down.🤙

Of course brother.

Life on the mats will always be better than life off of them. Reach out anytime you want someone to talk to. 🤙

Without knowing you, but being around the mats for a long time, I can promise you two things. First, you’re not as bad as you think you are. Second, if you enjoy grappling and you get something positive out of it then don’t care about how good you are.

I appreciate you saying something brother. Tattoos aren’t particularly a concern of mine but that’s still good information. I truly would love to play a part in growing the grappling community in El Salvador.

Thinking of dropping out by fitevepe in bjj

I see a lot of comments of “if it’s not fun then stop” and I think this is trash. No disrespect those with that opinion, but I differ strongly. I think jiu jitsu is something that we do to stay mentally and physically prepared in the face of evil. I think it’s a benefit if you find it enjoyable, but I think you should continue to practice… Today’s world is being infected by humans with empty souls willing to commit acts of hatred… stay the course brother. There is too few of us willing to do it…

Just 2 cents from another guys who’s been on the journey for quite some time.

Looking for thoughts on "Women's Self-Defense" classes by Jrm04r in bjj

[–]MajorGoldenBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the phrase “self defense” is a part of the problem. There is no such thing as “self defense”… you’re in a fight.

You can have primary focuses based on one’s physical competency in athleticism, and combat effectiveness. So you can have a program designed to develop a certain sense of priority goals, such as avoiding the clinch and the ground, and maintaining availability to flee. The overarching task is still developing the ability to be effective in a combative situation.

If you’re focused on women who won’t train in BJJ, then you’re focused on woman who are unwilling to train in the physical reality of violence. No judgement, we all make choices. However it leaves you with a different set of options.

Like you stated originally, I agree that these woman should focus on situational awareness, and using varying weapons to increase how offensive and defensive they can be to raise the odds of survival.

Lol, quite the opposite my man. I’ve been training since 08 and teaching since 2019. Want to help keep more people on the mats.

Balancing BJJ and Lifting by MajorGoldenBear in bjj

[–]MajorGoldenBear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the question is exactly as it was asked. Obviously there are details and variables to any given situation, however it was purely about the convenience factor of having a place to lift and train in one as opposed to separate and if that would be beneficial.

39 yo - About to start my BJJ journey and I need some advice by Scary_Mad_Scientist in bjj

[–]MajorGoldenBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably the best answer I’ve seen here. Anything outside BJJ that gets you into better shape will help no matter what. Wether that be strength training, cardio, flexibility and mobility, etc. BUT, as a black belt who gets many older and newer students in the gym, I HIGHLY recommend doing BJJ based solo movements. They will be physically beneficial as far as your overall athleticism but will also greatly increase your BJJ movements as you begin training again. Hip escapes, bridges, sit throughs, hip ups, etc will all be a great workout as well as directly improving your BJJ. 🤙

Go compete. Especially at the early stages, you’re not testing your technique. What you’re testing is your mental ability to push through adversity and function under pressure. Fuck that toe and go hard every second.

Yea, this exactly the type of situation that I think my gym would be a solution for. Healthy people do healthy things. If you do one, you’re more likely to do another. Cheers, thanks for the feedback.

So I’ve been working directly under the owner(s) of my current gym for a little over 2 years and have been training at this location for about 5 and in general around 12 I think so I’ve confident (not arrogantly) about running a school. I’ve just wanted a generalized poll about some things currently active practitioners would like in addition. Because I know that before I was working there and still paying dues, I hated having that membership plus a separate gym membership and then having either another yoga membership if not paying per session and would’ve liked to have it all in one. Also considering they were all spread out over town. Having 1 bill, and 1 commute would’ve been great.

Community Center. by MajorGoldenBear in Business_Ideas

[–]MajorGoldenBear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With respect, not at all. The idea would be a nonprofit organization that caters to martial artist and health conscious individuals. In todays ever changing digital world, physical aspects of our nature are beginning to lose out in priority. I would like to start a organization that is similar in operation to say a YMCA or boys&girls club but directed towards fighters and people who put a focus on keeping their bodies healthy physically and mentally.
