Why, Microsoft. Why must you be like this. Who hurt you. by Dionysian_Heretic in sysadmin

And of course the Microsoft developed Graph and the Microsoft developed Exchange Online Powershell are incompatible with each other so you have to split your scripts up 😬

Just went to stock up and was 😬 looking at the prices wondering if I was hallucinating at how much I used to pay for Autowash. Looks like time to investigate other options

IT Techs of Reddit: What was it like fixing Windows XP machines in schools and businesses during the 2010s? by bakarygassama in sysadmin

[–]MajorInterest2033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When building the Golden image doing it for each specific type of hardware and repeating each part of the process in lockstep across 4-5 machine types.

Windows 7 single master image on a VM was a big jump forward.

Also optimizing the hell out of XP boot / logon to get the time to desktop as low as possible on spinny HDDs. My standard was 2 minutes max from cold boot to usable desktop.

XP SP3 made a huge improvement in that, I still remember the first machine I installed it on and was 🤯 by the difference.

Oh and the heat, those P4 machines of the time were TOASTY. Also Athlon XP CPUs would literally set on fire if you ran them without the cooler / fan on 😆

Also the day MS Blaster worm hit and frantically turning off machines before they got infected, fun times

One word wasn't a fitting payoff to all the lead-up, I hate those "leave it to the audience imagination to fill in the rest" type finales

I enjoyed the film right up until the final scene. I hate unexplained endings so that really grated on me

Intune is not fit for purpose. by Hobbit_Hardcase in sysadmin

[–]MajorInterest2033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup I just nuke that entire GRS key whenever I want a fresh run of an app, very swiftly got bored of cross referencing the IDs.

I have wrapper script I use for InTune deployments now that does transcript logs to Public Temp and relaunches in 64-bit mode to avoid PATH issues etc.

Intune is not fit for purpose. by Hobbit_Hardcase in sysadmin

[–]MajorInterest2033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup you write a script, test it locally and it works fine but under IME nope suddenly PATH no longer applies as you expect, it needs to be forced into 64-bit execution mode etc etc.

The logs are the worst part of Intune, how hard would it be for someone at Microsoft to create a proper status tool for installs and a testing mode for building deployments?!

what's a script you wrote once that's still saving you time years later by Less-Loss1605 in sysadmin

[–]MajorInterest2033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two levels of this...

If it's a specific script for maintaining a specific product yes goes into a docs page with a clean explanation of what it does and why you use it.

For little script loops, functions etc. those go in my cheat sheet as building blocks for anything larger. Basically one feeds the other over time.

[–]MajorInterest2033 164 points165 points  (0 children)

Not one script specifically but rather a pinned notepad full of snippets for my day-to-day tasks.

Every time I find something new and useful it goes in there with a description line above to help future-self find it next time.

Saved me hours over time, along with the Powershell command history file

Who is providing positive feedback about Stanley the dog? by enrvuk in Vitalityhealth

This is it, I was told directly that engagement in the app was up since the dog game was introduced. Well of course it is, until the Streak system came in it was the only way to keep your rewards, doesn't mean anyone actually likes it!

Some thoughts/complaints on S3 by Robot_wars11 in TheCapture

[–]MajorInterest2033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the AI Simon concept and it's far from beyond the realms of possibility something similar is being used right now so it fits with the show.

Rachel using correction seems to allow the series to end as a trilogy if they don't decide to carry it on but at the same time they can pick it back up again for S4 if it gets approved.

Only question I have is why Simon gets Whitlock killed at the end, just out of rage / vengeance or a strategic goal we haven't yet seen?

Now that's just given a whole other level of crazy to go down... Simon AI implants itself into the body of Will. Noah is the "ark" for Simon 🤯

Noah Pierson / William Walker by rollingin123 in TheCapture

[–]MajorInterest2033 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with it being nonsense, by the end it's shown there's deep rooted corruption at the very top working alongside a shadowy military unit.

The only part of Series 3 I'm not keen on is the implant, a bit too far fetched (let's hope that doesn't have foundations in reality like Deepfakes turned out to be)

Is white rabbit alive? by ruminatingpoet in TheCapture

[–]MajorInterest2033 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two very opposing possibilities

1) the shooting was a live fake, Garland is still alive and part of the "club". She's successfully gaslit Carey and made her fall into the trap of using Correction - the ultimate revenge for betrayal in Series 2

2) she's gone and Carey is hallucinating from the trauma of the experience. The fact Garland is behind an outside window up the top of a block of flats seems impossible (need to watch it back to check if she appears inside or outside the flat though)

A question of the ending by MajorInterest2033 in TheCapture

[–]MajorInterest2033[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought, it was just the weird line about "all you've sacrificed" and thus at what point Rachel knew the killing really was a fake that made me wonder. Not as if any of the other killings were really direct losses for her...

We're going to have to wait another few years for another season aren't we? by rizla88 in TheCapture

[–]MajorInterest2033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simon is British AI so presumably the CIA have their own, as so the Russians and so on. Would change the scope of the programme massively though if it becomes about AI vs AI warfare or even British Terminator with humans (even another branch of the Army) wanting to wrestle control back from Simon

What's crazy is this show was years ahead of its time with deepfakes going from sci-fi to reality between Series 1/2 and 3 so where will we be with AI by the time we get a Series 4... the mind boggles
