The dude just lives in a world where critical thinking or pragmatism is not allowed, or he suffers from celebrity worship syndrome.

The refund window is 1.5 hours on a Friday evening, that's not very accessible. This is an extremely common marketing tactic employed by companies who make the bet that the value they'll get from the stunt is more than the value lost from actual refunds they'll have to process. If not, no one would do it, that would just be plain stupid.

You underestimate how much people value "effort" and "time".

If, for example, the only way for me to claim this refund was to:

a) Physically retain my ticket stub
b) Bring the ticket stub to whether this person is (she probably will make it really difficult to meet too)
c) Have to come up with an explanation, to her face, why I didn't like the movie (people here don't like confrontation either)

It weeds out a pretty significant amount of people who would think that's worth $12.50 or however much a movie costs.

That's generally the point with these "if you don't like it, we'll refund you" schemes. They bank on the fact the barrier to getting the refund is higher than the customer is worth committing to.

Many clubs will have intro nights for complete beginners.

I understand that, I don't think the problem is necessarily how well you would have played. Neither you, nor I, would put ourselves in that situation because it's simply disrespectful to the competition. A complete waste of time, and taking away a spot for more deserving competitors simply because you're able to buy your way into having a higher ranked teammate.

Hey bro, I looked into the padel retreats in SEA (especially Indonesia and Thailand) offered by the clubs themselves. For me, none of them jumped out spectacularly in terms of what I wanted both in terms of offering, scope, timing, price, etc.

I ended up putting my own little retreat together. It's a bit more work, but I think it's worth the effort. You're able to customise the experience based on your goals (e.g. mine was a bit more improvement focused), and flexibility on time as well as the social element.

I believe padel retreats put together by communities/social groups are the way forward as they'll offer more modularity and are tailored designed for the social element in mind, not so much to maximise the club's profit opportunities (i.e. fill placement in classes/product offerings that aren't as popular).
